This is the second Bevan John Shield The Touchstone December 1939 p. 9: House rivalry was greatly stimulated on Sports' Day by the gift of the Bevan John Shield. The Shield is made of rosewood with silver plates attached, on which is to be inscribed the name of the Winning House. Each school scored points and the winner had its name inscribed onto this shield.Associated with Orbost District Schools Association school sports 1922-1929. School sports competitions were held annually with the winning school being acknowledged by being awarded 'the' shield. The shield was usually paid for through donations. It was donated back to be used again and the current winner's name added to the Shield.The names of the school teams indicate that the shield was competed for by the primary schools in the Kiewa Valley. The years are during the 1960s when many of the smaller schools still existed. Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season.This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E. Red gum shield was made from a piece of the Ovens River punt which served as a river crossing at the Sydney Hotel two centuries ago and which had lain on the river bed for approximately 100 years. This framed photograph is of the Victoria Challenge Shield which was presented in 1888 by the Warrnambool firm of Cramond and Dickson for competition among the Victoria Garrison Artillery members in Victoria. There were 8 garrison groups in Victoria at that time. The shield was 22 inches wide and two feet six inches high.The quality of the shield can be gauged by that fact that it was exhibited at the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888 and was one of the items inspected by Queen Victoria. The stipulation by the donors was that the competition had to be held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool artillery group won the trophy in 1898 and this is noted in one of the newspaper cuttings included with the photograph of the shield. The Cramond and Dickson general store in Warrnambool was founded in 1855 by John Cramond and James Dickson and was a prominent business in Warrnambool until it closed in 1973. This photograph is of considerable interest as it is a reminder of the Victoria Challenge Shield that was a competition prize for competing groups of the Victoria Garrison Artillery in the times when volunteer militia groups were strong in Victorian country towns ( from the 1860s to the beginning of the First World War). This is a framed oval photograph of the Victoria Challenge Shield. The photograph is of poor production and fading. The shield details include images of War and Peace, Coat of Arms, militia figures and guns and a rifle match (in the centre). There are two newspaper cuttings included in the frame and a handwritten date. Both this students stick pin and Ex Students' Association stick pin were owned and worn by Helen Veitch who was a student at the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1948. The Ballarat Teachers' College was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Pre service teachers currently undertake their studies on the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University. The Baranduda and District School Sports Association held its first interschool sporting competition in 1936. Schools included in this association were Allan’s Flat, Bonegilla, Baranduda, Leneva, Mitta Junction, Staghorn Flat and Wodonga West. This commemorative trophy, The Thomas Chubb Shield, was donated to the Sports Association by Mr. Albert John Chubb, in memory of his father. Mr. Thomas Chubb was a successful businessman in Albury and an active supporter of many institutions and community organisations in the Albury Wodonga area. This wooden shield was used in hand to hand fighting between Jaara people and other tribes and with European settlers. It was made for personal use by one warrior and would have been passed on to his next nearest male kin. If it did not fit them, it would have been placed with the body of the warrior.This shied was gifted to Uncle Brien Nelson when he was working in Portland. This wooden fighting shield is undecorated and fashioned for use in either the left or right hand. It is elongated finishing in points at the top and bottom. It is carved from a single piece of wood and has a handle carved into the back. The shield has some minor striations on the front which may have been produced during fighting

The Cassie Football Club was part of the Young Men's Castellorizian Club (YMCS), 1962 - 1965, an organisation established within the Castellorizian Association of Victoria to cater for the sporting, social and leisure pursuits of the second and third generations of the Castellorizian youth in Melbourne. Whilst the football team was the main focus for both players and supporters, the YMCS also fielded cricket and debating teams. This football trophy was awarded to the Best & Fairest for the 3 years of the club's duration - N Constance 1963, N Constance 1964 and L Scotis 1965. This item is of social significance as it represents the hey day of the club, with both an active ladies and men's group supporting the youth. Membership was at its peak across the organisation and the generations, with the sporting teams becoming a key focus of social events. Schools divided the children / students into houses for internal sports competition. The students' team and their participation was rewarded by acknowledgment on a shield or trophy.This trophy was for Mt Beauty Primary School sports during the 1950s and 1960s. It was sponsored by the Mt Beauty School Mothers' Club indicating that the parents supported the sports. During this time, the 1950s and 1960s Mothers' Clubs existed and supported the schools. Women’s Auxiliaries were formed by mothers, wives, widows, sisters, daughters and aunts of men who served in the First World War. In May1918 a small band of women from the "Friendly Union" organised themselves,under the leadership of Mrs F C Purbrick, into a Women's Auxiliary of the Wangaratta Returned Soldiers Association (RSA). Their first task was to furnish club rooms for the RSA and this was achieved by seeking donations and raising money by selling jams, jellies and posies of violets by selected girls wearing special badges in the street. Over the years funds have been raised through raffles, competitions, street stalls and catering at numerous events to assist the aims of the Returned Services League. In 2018 the Wangaratta RSL Women's Auxiliary celebrated its centenary. Women have played a central role in sustaining the activities of ex-service organisations. Women's auxiliaries are dedicated to fundraising, supporting the activities of their local RSL, and caring for veterans in their wider community. State school children in the famous orchard district of Harcourt were expected to learn apple packing to a high standard, with instruction given by Dept of Agriculture specialist teachers, Classes were conducted at Harcourt Cooperative Coolstores during school hours.The pupils were expected to (and did) travel between school and packing shed by their own means without supervision..Pupils participated in state wide competitions .Shows the extent to which vocational training in a specialized subject could be taken to support the Apple Industry of Harcourt.
