In 1868, Walter Sheldrick, a Warrnambool butcher, established a company to operate the Warrnambool New Brewery (at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets). The company was wound up but the brewery continued to operate as Sheldrick and Co., with Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price as principal partners. Sheldrick died in 1893 but the brewery continued with various partners in the business. In 1894 the brewery was sold to James W. McGee and Co. and this firm operated the brewery until its demise in 1922 when it was bought out by the Ballarat, Melbourne Co-Operative and Carlton and United Breweries and closed. This demijohn is of interest as it came from the Warrnambool New Brewery (closed 1922). This brewery, known as Sheldrick’s was a prominent business in Warrnambool for over 50 years. This is a circular-shaped stone jar enclosed in a wicker case with handles. The jar has a circular yellow top with no stopper. ‘James W. Appendix to Shire Secretary’s Report, 28 November 1966 SHIRE PRESIDENTS Local Government in this part of the State could be said to have commenced with election in 1846 of three trustees for "The Parish Road, leading from the Suburban Allotments in the Parish of Jika Jika, near Melbourne, to the Village Reserve in the Parish of Nillumbik". The Upper Heidelberg and Old Eltham Road follow approximately the original line of road proclaimed in 1840. The Eltham Road District was proclaimed on 24.9.1856. A meeting of landowners and householders of the Eltham Road District was held on 14.10.1856 at the Fountain of Friendship Hotel, Little Eltham, for the purpose of forming a District Road Board. To date I have been unable to locate any record of the names of the members elected, or of the first Chairman. Further research may yield the desired information. The Shire of Eltham was constituted on 28.3.1871. The proposed Roll of Shire Presidents should, I believe, also include the Road Board Chairmen. It may also be considered fitting to recognise the Heidelberg or Nillumbik (or Warringal) Road Trust in the same way. The first Minute Book of the Board, covering the period 1856 to 1863, has apparently been missing for many years. The Shire Minute Book for the period 1878 to 1885 is also missing. The absence of these vital records makes difficult the compilation of a complete and accurate list of Chairmen and Presidents. Although an early letter book yielded the names of the Shire Presidents in 1878, 1879 and 1800. The names prior to 1863 were derived from Rate Books and Government Gazettes. Nellie Price entered Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College in 1920. Daughter of Mr E H Price of 'Dumbarton' Sturt St W; sister of John L, Elvina Coltman & E Morris. Nell was President of the CPLC Old Collegians Association 1941-42 and Secretary 1955-57. She married Robert Smail, uncle of Andrew Smail (1954). Robert's father built the original Enderly house in Sturt St. This trophy provides a significant glimpse of both the nature and importance of sports amongst school students in the 1920s. This Emergency Edition of the map of Panmure, Victoria, is part of the W.R. Angus Collection. It was printed in 1942 during World War II. It is one of two maps donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Doctor William Roy Angus, who served as Surgeon Captain in the Australian Defence Department. The map was compiled for the Dept. of Army by the Dept. of Lands and Survey in Melbourne, prepared by the Australian Section of the Imperial General Staff, which was a British Government body created in 1907 to co-ordinate the defence of Britain and its Empire. It was printed by A.H.Q. Cartographic Company, Survey Corps, which was formed in 1941. The Corp changed its name to L.H.Q. Cartographic Company of Bendigo. In 1947 the name reverted back to the A.H.Q. Cartographic Company until 1955 when it became the A.H.Q. Survey Regiment. The W.R. Angus Collection includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus who began practice in 1924. Dr. Angus served with the Australian Department of Defence as a Surgeon Captain during the Second World Was from 1942 to 1945. He served in Ballarat, Victoria, and in Bonegilla, N.S.W. until he suffering from a heart attack just before the war ended. ABOUT THE “W.R.ANGUS COLLECTION” - Doctor William Roy Angus M.B., B.S., Adel., 1923, F.R.C.S. Edin.,1928, was generally known as Dr Roy Angus. His working life included a position as a doctor with the Flying Doctor Service in Australia’s rural and remote areas. After many varied experiences Dr Angus and his family moved to Warrnambool in 1939 where he purchased “Birchwood,” the 1852 home and medical practice of Dr John Hunter Henderson. He was appointed on a part-time basis as Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool and held this position until the 1940’s when the government no longer required the service of a Port Medical Officer. Dr Angus was a surgeon at the Warrnambool Base Hospital 1939-1942. After further studies he commenced practice as an ophthalmologist in Warrnambool, pioneering in artificial eye improvements. He was Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist to Warrnambool Base Hospital for 31 years and made monthly visits to Portland to perform eye surgery. Dr Angus and his wife Gladys were very involved in Warrnambool’s community with a strong interest in civic affairs. They were both involved in the creation of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, including the layout of the gardens. After his death on 28th March 1970 his family requested his practitioner’s plate, medical instruments and some personal belongings be displayed in the Port Medical Office surgery at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, and be called the “W. R. Angus Collection”. This Emergency Edition of the Map of Panmure is significant as an example of the documents prepared for the defence of Australia in World War 2. The Map is also significant for its connection between the Australian Army and the involvement of Dr WR Angus as a Surgeon in the Medical Services during World War II. The W.R. Angus Collection is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. The collection of medical instruments and other equipment is culturally significant, being an historical example of medicine, administration, household equipment and clothing from late 19th to mid-20th century. Dr Angus assisted Dr Tom Ryan, a pioneer in the use of X-rays and in ocular surgery. The collection includes Dr Angus’s Army objects and is significant as an example of items issued to Doctors and Surgeons in the Medical Services of the Australian Army in World War IIMilitary map of Panmure, Victoria, Australia; part of the W.R. The tunes in the set of sheet music are mostly marches, jaunty and bright songs from the 1910s. The sheet music were published by W H P & Co., which was the company of William Henry Paling, Sydney. Paling was born in the Netherlands in 1825. He was a musician, composer, and violin teacher at the Academy of Rotterdam. In 1853 he arrived in Sydney where he became a piano and violin teacher and a professor of music at a ladies' college. He opened the W H Paling music warehouse around the same time, at 85 Wynyard Square in Sydney. He initiated clubs and groups, was involved in fundraising in the community, and conducted a Philharmonic Society concert. He seized the opportunity to supply the growing demand for pianos and local sheet music, becoming an agency for European manufacturers. He made several trips to Europe to supply his business. In 1875 the firm opened up premises in George Street Sydney. On his 1884-85 trip, he met Pietro Marich, an Austrian musician and businessman who then joined Piling's company and successfully expanded it into large premises with showrooms. In 1886 Piling's brother John joined the firm as partner. In 1883 it became a limited liability company, setting up in other major cities. He had many civic involvements and eventually presented his model farm at Campden for use as a hospital, along with finances to erect buildings on the land. He became ill after a trip to Europe, passing away in 1895, but the company continued in business.The collection of sheet music represents the musical and entertainment taste of the early 20th century. Sheet music was collected from Europe and locally and played in homes and public gatherings for listening to, for dancing and for background music. Annual wildflower shows took over the Hall's Gap Hall during spring and, in the 1930's, transformed it into a veritable wonderland. So popular were these displays that they have continued through until present times, the format has altered but the display of flowers remains the same. Ladies' Committees were formed to sell art and crafts during shows, and much of the revenue from these events went towards a future new building. The ticket shows that the admission price in 1933 was 1/- (one shilling). A comparison with Record 387 shows that the price had not risen from that rate in 1938. The Hon. Sec at this time was H. Listed as 'Butter machines (Glass) Makes butter equal to the best wooden churn, and quicker.
