Photograph of Foundation stone for Ringwood State School No. 2997 was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August, 1889, marking the opening of the school situated in Whitehorse Road at the corner of Ringwood Street (1889-1922). Mrs. Turnbull was the wife of the Ringwood Station Master. The stone was removed after the school closed in 1922 and re-laid in 1962 by the School Committee at this subsequent Greenwood Avenue school site and is pictured here being viewed near the entrance in 1973 by Mr. Ron Pullin, Archivist, Ringwood Historical Research Group".Sign below photograph reads, "Foundation stone of Ringwood State School (late Ringwood St.). Now in grounds of Greenwood Avenue Ringwood State School". Inscription on stone, "This foundation stone was laid by Mrs. J.K. Turnbull on 15th August 1889". The photo of the students at Bulla State School No. 45 was taken in 1893. The school was erected in stages in School Lane. The bluestone building was the first to be built followed by the weatherboard building and a teacher's residence. It closed in 1996 and is now a private residence. Ivy Wilson left Humffray Street State School and as a 12 year old enrolled at the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School. She studied Art there from 1920 to 1922. Ivy Wilson later became a successful dressmaker and was able to make her own patterns. Ivy's father was an orthopedic bootmaker. This book, by the well-known author R.M.Ballantyne, was awarded to Edith Newton in 1877 when she was a pupil at the Warrnambool State School. This school was opened on August 1st 1876 when the National School in Warrnambool closed and most of the pupils of other denominational schools in Warrnambool at the time moved to the new State School. The Head Teacher, William Bryant was at the school until 1894. (Blanch) Edith Newton was born in 1868, the eighth child of Robert and Mary Newton. Robert Newton was a Rate Collector, Borough Inspector and Manager of the Town Common in Warrnambool. It is noted that the prize received by Edith Newton was an adventure book mostly appealing to male readers. This book is significant because it is connected with important elements in Warrnambool in 1877 – the school, Warrnambool State School, the pupil, Edith Newton and the Head Teacher, William Bryant,This is a hard cover book of 330 pages. It has a dark red cover with etched ornamental borders and patterns and an image of a jungle scene on the front cover and on the spine. The title and author’s name are in gold lettering. At the heading of each chapter there is an ornamental scroll and there are several black and white sketches throughout the pages. There are blue stamps of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society at the front and back of the book and a school plate label attached to the inside front cover. The spine is partly detached and torn and the cover is very worn and water or mould damaged. In January 1912, a small school was established at Chelsea, with 65 students, in Hoadley’s Hall, located on Main Road, Chelsea, near the Nepean Highway. Due to its Oriental appearance, the local people called this hall “The Joss House.” Hoadley's Hall was was originally used at the Melbourne Show Grounds by Hoadley's which was moved to Chelsea. The Hall was also used for church services by different religions before they built their own churches. Early in 20th century, a small group of girls at Myrtleford State School 955 participated in honouring Empire Day each May by "dressing up" to represent Britannia. This select group of girls celebrates the might of Britannia in the first full year of World War 1. It reflects the type of celebrations schools were expected to participate in at that time and for some years to come.
