These brooches were made by Hans Beck, a German Templer who was born and lived in Palestine. When WWII broke out, he was sent to Australia on the "Queen Elizabeth" in 1941 and interned in Tatura Camp 3. His wife and children were left behind in Palestine. His daughter Ingrid said that although they were behind barbed wire, they were safe. Hans worked as a manufacturing jeweler in Sydney after his release from Internment. He sent for his family on 1947. A 1 x wooden triangular shape with a small four petal flower made of tiny white shells. A metal stick pin is attached to the back. B 1 x wooden heart shape. Two flowers on stems made from small pink shells. Each flower has five petals. A group of four tiny white shells sit between the flowers. A vase is carved into the bottom of the heart. A small safety pin in attached to the back. C 1 x wooden oval shape. Group of three pink shell flowers on green stems. Two flowers have six petals and a centre made from shells. The centre flower has only one petal. A bow of tiny white shells at the base of the brooch. Small safety pin attached to back. D 1 x wooden round shape. A cluster of shells in a floral pattern. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. John Lundy-Clarke has identified the photograph as being of Clint Rowse and Staff at Olinda Creek Valley in 1939. The workmen are: Back row from right: Bob Daly, Dud Page, Harry Dyson, Bill Cavell, Len Child, Ken Williams. Front row from right: Clint Rowse, Jack Clarke, Bernie Page, Jack Johnson (with dog). The Rowse family had extensive raspberry crops but later changed to flowers. Daisy Rowse married Hubert Jeeves. Clint and Ted named in this photograph are Clint Rowse and Ted Rowse, two of the sons of W. Rowse. W Rowse purchased the house and 60 acres of land previously held by Willie Richardson when the Richardson family left the area in the early 1900s. Initially the Rowse family grew fruit and vegetables on the land but by the time W. Rowse died in 1936 they had shifted almost entirely to flower growing. The photograph is from he Ivy Child Album. The photograph is from the album of Ivy May Child. It shows a view across the holding of Walter Jeeves. Walter was the second son of Ellis Jeeves and grandson of Isaac Jeeves, the pioneer. Walter was given the house 'Kalorama' and 20 acres of lnd - most of it sloping. He established a commercial garden, initially growing vegetables but later flowers and shrubs. This land now forms part of Kalorama Park. The building in the photograph is the Kalorama Homestead with shrubs and trees planted in rows on the sloping site. In the background there are low hills with cleared paddocks and forested areas. According to the National Archives of Australia: 'Land was life for nurseryman Theo Spykers and his ancestors who had tilled the soil for generations; good land to own and to pass on to sons and their sons. At 42 Theo had one and a half acres near Rotterdam for a prosperous nursery, but he could only rent it and his family was growing. So, in 1948, Theo left his wife and six children at their home and set off by himself for Australia. Within a year he had paid a deposit on a broken-down property of 35 acres in the Dandenong ranges. His family joined him and they started to rehabilitate their new property. Mr and Mrs Spykers and twelve of their thirteen children pick chrysanthemums for sale in Melbourne, a city of 1,750,000. The children are; Theo, 20; Gerald, 15; Niko, 8; Frank, 5; Adolf, 22; Corrie, 11; Ria, 18; Terisa, 4; Anthony, 7; Tommy, 2; Elly, 10; Bill, 16.' Mr & Mrs Spykers are each holding one of the smaller children. This farm was on the corner of Birds Rd and Avon Rd, Avonsleigh. On the NAA records, Theodorus Gerardus Spykers arrived in Melbourne on the Muiderkerk on 27th February 1948. Black and white photo showing 15 year old Gerald Spykers carrying bundles of chrysanthemums tied ready for market. He is at the family farm on the corner of Birds Rd and Avon Rd, Avonsleigh. -

Samuel Bedson (1834 - 6/12/1909) Samuel Bedson worked at the Bendigo Pottery making artificial flowers for 20 years. He left Victoria in 1895 before dying in Christchurch, New Zealand. His daughter Maude married Horatio David Collier in 1894 and remained in Bendigo. Horatio founded Collier Shoes in the early 1900's. 8555 Bedson family (father Samuel, wife Elizabeth & daughter Maude). Samuel Bedson (1834 - 1909), wife Elizabeth (Nee Astbury) and daughter Maude Eliza (1873 - 1960) Samuel & wife came to Bendigo, either with or shortly after Geo. George Edwin Wells was born in Oxford in 1826. He served an apprenticeship as a coachbuilder and in 1841 he went to New Zealand. He was returning to England in 1848 when he changed his mind in Singapore and turned around and came to Melbourne. He operated a store with Mr W Gibbs and when gold as discovered they left their wives in Melbourne and went to the gold fields of Ballarat in 1851. At this time George was newly married to Catherine Kiely. In 1852 the two men were at the Golden Gully area of the Fryers Creek gold fields, they then move to Bendigo, initially to White Hills before settling in Long Gully. They then brought their patient wives, who had only had visits from their husbands, to Bendigo. George had several successful mining ventures in Bendigo. He died in 1898. One of his sons, Alfred, married Margaret Rotherham in NSW where he was living. Alfred died in 1911 leaving Margaret with a young family. She moved to Bendigo to be nearer to family support. Alfred and Margaret's daughter, Elma Winslade Wells 91904 - 19/1/1988) became a teacher and was posted to Camp Hill Primary School. She was also heavily involved in the Scout movement in the Bendigo area.Blue hardcover scrapbook belonging to the Wells family. (Elma Wells). The cover has gold, black and blue flowers and birds on it. The word "scraps" in red within a gold rectangular box completes the cover. Inside all the pages are filled with drawing and pictures of people, animals, flowers and landscapes. Also, various poems are transcribed on the pages. 'Wimba' is of significance as one of the key nineteenth century houses of Kew and for remaining in a substantially intact state. Although probably built some time earlier, the first mention in the Rate Books of the property later known as 'Wimba Lodge' appears in the entry for 1870 when the property, owned by John Sharpe Denbigh, a civil servant, was given an N.A.V. of £72 2. Denbigh did however occupy a house in Cotham Road in 1863, and it is possible that was the same premises'. The house was occupied by Denbigh until at least May 1876 when the 'family residence...' \ 'as auctioned to Carlington George Edmund Marston 5, a chemist of Smith Street, Collingwood. At the time of the auction the house was described thus: The residence and grounds of the late J.S. Dendigh, situate in the most elevated part of Cotham Road Kew. The grounds comprise an area of 4a Or29p or thereabouts, and have a frontage to Cotham-road of 4 chains. The house has two large rooms in front, with 6ft hall built of brick, bay and side windows (plate glass), four rooms of wood behind with slate roofs, bathroom and closets, detached kitchen and servant's room, large shed with washing boiler, pantry and cellar under, brick and cement tank, and the Yan Yean laid onto house and grounds, cowshed, pigstye, &c, the whole securely fenced. First class orchard and flower garden. The paddocks laid with English grasses and drained... .' (Sanderson P, City of Kew Urban Conservation Study, Volume 2, 1988)This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.The front entrance of Wimba in Cotham Road, Kew. The entrance is flanked by two polygonal bay windows, and a verandah with a concave corrugated iron roof returns around three facades, and accentuates the projections of the windows. The solid render parapet is very ornate and tall for the date of construction. It has panels of decoration along it and is surmounted by a number of render urns. This photo was taken at the opening of the footbridge by Sir Winston Dugan in 1936.South Surrey Park was developed on land which had been the property of the Kleinert family. Their land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. The family sold the land to the Camberwell Council in the 1950s.This photo is significant as it shows the transition from rural to urban land use in Surrey Hills.Black and white photo taken in the area later known as South Surrey Park. Back Creek is in the foreground. There is a tent on the LHS and approximately 7 houses which front Verdun Street. This photo was taken at the opening of the footbridge over Back Creek by Sir Winston Dugan, Governor of Victoria, in 1936. He is cutting bunting draped along the bridge rails. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. Buried at Box Hill Cemetery - M-*-0867 (family plot) This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. She remembers it as having pressed ceilings in some rooms and ornate fireplaces and tiles and leadlight windows in some rooms and doors with leadlight panels. Her grandfather was a keen gardener with an ornamental front garden and many vegetables and fruit trees in the back yard. Her grandfather sold the adjoining block (No 3 York Street), which had been used for growing flowers and vegetables, to John and Edna Jean. Reid. She also remembered that he extended the house and divided it into 2 flats, renting out the northern side for 20 years. These are the 4 surviving daughters of Thomas Henry Deakin (1845-1915), born in Monmouthshire, Wales and his wife Janet (Jessie) Longmore (1851-1939), born in Morayshire, Scotland. The couple also had 2 sons: John Henry (1879-1962) and William Andrew (1883-1939). A fifth daughter Daisy Jessie was born in 1880 and died the same year at the age of 7 months. Elsie Longmore Deakin (1881-1969) was a nurse ans remained single; Minnie Winifred (1886-1966) married Charles Williamson in 1923; Lily Vipond (1890-1943) married David Mair in 1910 and Jessie Alice, known as Alice, married Hector Williamson in 1921. Hector and Charles were brothers. Elsie Longmore Deakin enlisted AANS aged 35 years in 10 May 1915; embarked on the Mooltan on 22 August 1916. Address : 114 Station Street, Fairfield, Next of kin : mother, Mrs Janet Deakin (nee Longmore), 114 Station Street, Fairfield, father, Thomas Henry Deakin Elsie Deakin enlisted at 35 years of age on 10 May, 1915 and served locally before volunteering for overseas duty on 9 August, 1916. Her three years of training were completed at the Melbourne General Hospital. She embarked with the rank of Sister for India and was appointed to the Victoria Hospital, Bombay. In January, 1917, when she was transferred to England and a Military Hospital at Bagthorpe later to the 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, and in January of the following years to 25 (British) GH in France but returned a few weeks later to England and the 1 AAH after suffering a seriously strained left ankle. She returned to France post-war and served another four months before being returned to Australia in May, 1919. Her appointment was terminated as medically unfit on 9 June, 1919. Born South Melbourne, she died in Elsternwick on 14 October, 1969, aged 87. The rear has 4 remnant glued labels roughly torn from larger labels - the type once common for labelling jars and bottles. Partially beneath these is writing in another hand in black ink: " ..th love and be.. / ..shes ---------your /(crossing out) then name removed (superficial paper loss. 3, "YOUNG" in blue biro in lower LH corner. This may be the donor's handwriting.
