Nicholas Caire was born on Guernsey in the Channel Islands in 1837. He arrived in Adelaide with his parents in about 1860. In 1867, following photographic journeys in Gippsland, he opened a studio in Adelaide. From 1870 to 1876 he lived and worked in Talbot in Central Victoria. In 1876 he purchased T. F. Chuck's studios in the Royal Arcade Melbourne. In 1885, following the introduction of dry plate photography, he began a series of landscape series, which were commercially successful. As a photographer, he travelled extensively through Victoria, photographing places few of his contemporaries had previously seen. He died in 1918. William Dower brought his family to the Dandenongs in 1898, taking up 10 acres. His property was Cambridge Gardens located between the present Mt Dandenng Tourist Road and Yarrabee Road. William and his wife Elizabeth had seven boys (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar, Robert) and four girls (Emmy, may, Ada and Ruby). This photograph shows raspberry picking at Cambridge Gardens c1907. The Dower Homestead is visible. The boys in the floppy felt hats are from Burwood Boys Home. Ruby Dower is centre front. The Springthorpe Memorial is an elaborate late 19th century memorial located within Boroondara General Cemetery. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the memorial for the Melbourne doctor John Springthorpe, in honour of the doctor’s wife. Construction began in 1897, and the memorial was unveiled in 1901. Boroondara Cemetery, established in 1858, is within an unusual triangular reserve bounded by High Street, Park Hill Road and Victoria Park, Kew. The caretaker's lodge and administrative office (1860 designed by Charles Vickers, additions, 1866-1899 by Albert Purchas) form a picturesque two-storey brick structure with a slate roof and clock tower. A rotunda or shelter (1890, Albert Purchas) is located in the centre of the cemetery: this has an octagonal hipped roof with fish scale slates and a decorative brick base with a tessellated floor and timber seating. The cemetery is surrounded by a 2.7 metre high ornamental red brick wall (1895-96, Albert Purchas) with some sections of vertical iron palisades between brick pillars. Albert Purchas was a prominent Melbourne architect who was the Secretary of the Melbourne General Cemetery from 1852 to 1907 and Chairman of the Boroondara Cemetery Board of Trustees from 1867 to 1909. He made a significant contribution to the design of the Boroondara Cemetery. The Sturt Street Gardens run down the centre of Ballarat's main street. It boast many statues. In front of the depicted Ballarat Town Hall is the Boer War Memorial which commemorates soldiers who have taken part in the South African War. The scuplture is by James White, and it was proposed by Cr J.J. Brokenshire, and was approved at the Council meeting on 31 May 1900. The foundation stone was laid on May 1901 but was relocated to the present site and re-laid by the then Mayor Brokenshire. William Dower took up 10 acres at Mt Dandenong in 1898. He secured a property known as Cambridge Gardens which was located between the present Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Yarrabee Road. William and his wife Elizabeth had seven sons (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar and Robert) and four daughters (Emmy, May, Ada and Ruby). There was a two room slab hut on the property when they took possession and they added another five rooms using trees from the property. The Pig and Whistle Tea Rooms referred to in the inscription is now Tatra Hut. The 2 cannons in the gardens were acquired by Mr Arthur Brookes, popularly known as 'Empire Brookes'. They were from a British vessel used during the Crimean War and were originally placed in the grounds of the Guildford Road Recreation Oval. The Dimmick Gateway was erected in 1950 by the citizens of Camberwell in memory of Cr William Dimmick, JP, Mayor of Camberwell, 1935-1936 and a Councillor from 1934-1947. There is a photo of him in Mayoral robes in the City of Boroondara Library Service collection. Cr Dimmick was commonly called Roy.Black and white photo of the Dimmick Gateway in Surrey Gardens. The gateway is built as if it was designed to have a fence attached but there is none. There are 2 tall central pillars and an arched bridge to 2 smaller pillars. It appears to be constructed from a variegated slate material. There is a light on the top of each of the tall pillars and also a plaque. To the RHS of the photo is part of the Surrey Shrine, skirted by 2 cypress trees. Entrance to Gardens - Port Fairy. The Port Fairy Botanical Gardens were formed in 1856 making it one of the earliest gardens in Victoria. The first curator was James Prior, he was paid fifty-two pounds per annum. He was an outstanding curator having been apprenticed to the trade in England at the age of 12, his brother Edward in later years was the Curator of the Koroit Gardens. Prior retired in 1903. During the years of his curatorship Port Fairy was said to have the best gardens outside the city of Melbourne, he was constantly in touch with Baron Von Mueller and later Guilfoyle of the Royal Botanical Gardens of Melbourne. In the early years plants from all over the world were planted here with varying rates of success many of them sent by Baron Von Mueller. In the 1930’ and 40’s the gardens were still very beautiful, and the curator was Roy Manuell. The beautiful iron gates at the entrance were destroyed in the 1946 floods and were replaced in 1989 using some of the material from the original gates. From the 1950’s on the gardens went into a state of decline, much being taken up by the caravan park until in 1986, after a public meeting ‘Friends of the Gardens’ was founded when the entrance section was restored.
