Sir Archie Michaelis was born on 9 December 1889 in St Kilda and died on 22 April 1975. He married Claire Esther Hart on 14 January 1920. They had 3 daughters. He represented the electorate of St Kilda in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1 May 1932 to 1 0ctober 1952. He was Speaker of the house from 1950 to 1952. Before entering politics he worked with the family firm Michaelis Hallenstein and Co., leather merchants, from 1909. He also served in the Royal Field Artillery 1914-1919, in Egypt, Aden and Salonika. Other roles included: president of the St. Kilda Hebrew Congregation, a leading Orthodox synagogue in Melbourne; President Vic. branch 1945 and Chairman Patriotic Funds Council 1947-1951; President Vic. Jewish Advisory Board 1939-1940; Vice-president Kipling Society, London, and President Vic. branch; member English Public Schools Association, Vic. Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen; Vice-president Alfred Hospital 1935-1972; Patron St Kilda Welfare Organisation, Claire Esther Michaelis was born on 20 Jan 1893 and died on 8 October 1973. This bag belonged to by Mrs Alice "May" Moss CBE (1869-1948), Australian suffragist, social welfare campaigner and longtime resident of 59 North Road, Brighton. Born Alice Frances Mabel Wilson in Ballarat, in 1887 May married Isidore Moss, the son of Norwood's builder Mark Moss. While her children were young, she began to campaign for the rights of women and served as vice-president of the Australian Women's National League in 1906-14, during which time she actively campaigned in Victoria for women's suffrage. She was an Australian delegate at the League of Nations Assembly at Geneva in 1927, where she was the first woman to sit on a finance committee. She attended the International Council of Women in Geneva in the same year and in 1928 was elected as vice president of the ICW, a position she held until her death. She was the first president of the National Council of Women of Australia, serving from 1931 to 1936. May was active in many other community organisations and causes, including the Royal Women's Hospital, the Collingwood Crèche and the Free Kindergarten movement. She served on the board of management of the City Newsboys' Society in 1906-48 and was the first woman lay-member of the National Health and Medical Research Council in 1936-45. In 1875 Tate was appointed Elder Professor of natural science at the University of Adelaide in South Australia, teaching botany, zoology and geology. He became vice-president and then as president (1878–1879) of the Philosophical Society. It changed name to the Royal Society of South Australia in 1880 with Tate as its first president in that year[1] Tate encouraged members to send in original papers, personally contributing nearly 100 papers to its Transactions and Proceedings. The Ballarat Save TAFE campaign ran from 2012 to 2014. It was a Trades Hall and community campaign in partnership with the Australian Education Union and National Tertiary Education Union. The campaign was in response to significant financial cuts and closure of many courses by the Baillieu/Napthine governments. Availability of TAFE in Ballarat is particularly important in training future tradespersons and future provision of many services. Narre Warren North had a population of 200 in 1933. Just a month after World War 2 began in September 1939, a meeting was held in the Narre Warren Scout Hall to discuss the formation of a branch of the Red Cross Society. Mrs Harry Randle was elected president, Mrs Montague, vice president; Mrs Brundrett, secretary and Mrs Ewart, treasurer. All financial members were deemed to constitute the committee. By 1953, just 14 years after their formation they had raised over two thousand pounds, of which one thousand, eight hundred and eighty-two pounds had been sent to headquarters.The minutes bring together the ladies of all walks of life in a small rural community. The early minutes reflect the difficulties of the war years when many of the women may have had husbands, sons and daughters in the services. Despite rationing and shortages of materials these ladies always seemed to have most of what they needed to make goods to sell at stalls, provide suppers at concerts and social afternoons and hold an annual fair. In their spare time they knitted socks and helmets and sewed pyjamas that were sent to those serving overseas. The minutes highlight the work of our local women and give us an insight into the often unrecorded contributions women made within their communities in a time when local histories were dominated by male achievements.Six exercise books bound with hard cover binding. The Red Ribbon Movement of 1853 represented a significant series of events in the history of Bendigo. During that year there was much agitation on the Bendigo gold fields, particularly during July and August of 1853, directed against the payment of what the miners called a tax - a licence fee of thirty shillings ($3) a month for the right to search for gold on what was declared Crown land. They had to pay the licence whether they found gold or not. The miners, or diggers as they were called, also resented the means used by the authorities at the time to collect the gold licence - through so-called 'digger hunts'. The miners were expected to carry their licences with them, and the police, who were often untrained, used harsh methods to check these licences. In Bendigo, the miners took to wearing a red ribbon ‘as a symbol of their protest against the licence. Red was a very common colour in items such as shirts, so was readily available. Shopkeepers too tied red ribbons to their premises as a sign of support for the miners. It should be remembered at that time virtually everyone was a miner. The diggers also had their own banner, designed by William Dexter, a china painter from Devon. This flag showed the pick, shovel and cradle representing labour, the scales representing justice, the Roman bundle of sticks meaning unity and the kangaroo and emu of Australia Many thousands of Bendigo miners signed a petition to La Trobe, the Governor of Victoria, protesting against the licence fee. When the Governor rejected the petition, thousands of diggers marched in peaceful protest. Miners from White Hills, Eaglehawk, Golden Square, Kangaroo Flat as well as from Bendigo Flat, converged on what is now Pall Mall and View Point, surrounding the ~government camp on Camp Hill. The camp had been reinforced with soldiers of the 40 Regiment, as the Government feared bloodshed. The miners then gathered on the hill behind View Point to hear from their leaders - among them George Thomson, Captain Harrison, Captain Brown and W.D.C. Denovan. They resolved to pay a token fee often shillings ($1) for the September licence, whenthey met with Commissioners Panton and Wright on Camp Hill. Although Wright and Panton were sympathetic to the miners, the offer was rejected, but no licence fees were collected for September. Thus a possible bloody conflict was averted by the common sense shown by the miners' leaders and the commissioners. It was a truly democratic protest against arbitrary government and preceded the Eureka Stockade Incident by over a year. This bottle came from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy and Co of Warrnambool. Richard Frank Kennedy (1826-1903) was born in England and came to Warrnambool in 1883 where he quickly established a large pharmacy business in Timor Street. In 1891 he built a mew shop which was described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist’s shops in Victoria. He was a retail, wholesale and manufacturing chemist with large workshops at the back of his building. Kennedy was active in community affairs in Warrnambool and a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club as the first Vice-President and an early President. The business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as ‘R.F. Kennedy and Co.’ Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The products of his chemist shop and factory were distributed all over Victoria and beyond. The bottle, although damaged, is an example of the smaller-size bottle in use at the shop he founded. This is a small, clear glass bottle used at the pharmacy of R.F. Kennedy and Co, of Warrnambool. It has a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a moulded circular opening. There is no stopper. The top rim is chipped and the bottom of the bottle near the base is cracked with parts missing. The name of the pharmacy is embossed on the side of the bottle. ‘R.F. The sport had its origins during the Depression of the 1930s when teams were formed to keep young women fit and healthy. The sport became more organised during the 1940s with a system of scoring developed to ensure teams could compete against one another. Points were deducted for lack of precisions, dressing, movement and length of pace. At its peak marching competitions drew large crowds of spectators. Teams marched not only in competitions but also frequently appeared in parades and social occasions. Jim Trewin trained Orbost's Marching Girls' team, the Waratahs, and served as vice president of the East Gippsland Marching Girls' zone. His wife, Doris, acted as chaperon Together with a trophy, a chaperone's blazer and photos this uniform forms part of the history of the Orbost Marching Girls group.An Orbost Marching Girls' uniform It has a white pleated skirt, a long-sleeved white blouse and a red velvet vest with 6 gold buttons. There is a badge on the left shoulder. A red ribbon is attached to the blouse as a bow tie. On the vest shoulders are white tabs with gold buttons. The skirt and blouse are made of cotton. These labels come from the pharmacy business of R.F.Kennedy who sold Lectar Company products and used a lighthouse image as his logo. Richard Kennedy (1826-1903), a wholesale, retail and manufacturing chemist in Timor Street, came to Warrnambool in 1880 and had what was described in the ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as ‘the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria’. Kennedy was the Vice-President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Victoria, on the Pharmacy Board and was prominent in community affairs n Warrnambool. He also made local perfumes with many varieties named after people or events of the time – Nellie Melba, Federation etc. His pharmacy building in Timor Street and his house in Canterbury Road (“Ivanhoe”) still stand today.These labels are of some interest as they are associated with the Warrnambool business of the chemist, R.F.Kennedy. This is a portrait of former ANZCA President, Associate Professor Richard Walsh. In 1996, he was elected Vice President and, in 1998 was elected President, serving a full two year term. This painting was formally presented to the College in 2006. He is most famous for his 2006 winning entry of the prestigious Sir John Sulman Prize in which he painted a portrait of Pope Francis which was presented to His Holiness in 2014.
