Clothing - Fletcher Jones Skirt, late 20th century
This skirt was made by the Fletcher Jones company as part of the uniform of the Penleigh Grammar School, Essendon, Melbourne. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) setup as a travelling hawker in the 1920s selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he opened a store in Warrnambool, moving into a two-storeyed building in Liebig Street in 1931. He manufactured and sold men's clothing at this site, opening a store in Melbourne in 1946 and a factory in Warrnambool in 1948. The company of Fletcher Jones and Staff, established in 1951, opened more stores and factories and operated Australia-wide and became well-known firstly for its production of men's trousers and later men's and women's clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. This skirt is of interest as a fine example of the quality clothing made by the Fletcher Jones clothing company. This business commenced in Warrnambool and was a dominant one in Warrnambool (and Australia) during the 20th century. This is a woman's tartan skirt in green and navy tonings. The skirt is pleated at the back and sides and has a silver-coloured metal buckle at the left side. It has metal clips and buttons that adjust the waistline size and a green cloth folder designed as a wallet with a press stud closer inside the front waist.College Apparel by Fletcher Jones Australiafletcher jones clothing stores -
Parks Victoria - Mount Buffalo Chalet
Cabinet, cutlery
"The Chalet has 8 cutlery cabinets, all in the same undecorated Edwardian style, with tapered legs and slightly flared feet. They were identified in the 1992 inventory and listed on the Third schedule ... The cutlery cabinets and serving table probably date from the earliest years of the 1925-26 Dining Room ... Although the items lack a recorded provenance, their stylistic unity implies that they are part of a specific set of Chalet furnishings. Such items derive their meaning from their relationship with other furnishings and objects in the setting where they were originally used, with each complimenting the other." (Pg 77. Historica, Cultural heritage projects - Mt Buffalo Chalet Collection - Significance Assessment, Prepared for Parks Victoria, 2011)Listed in Draft Inventory of Significant Collection Items. (Pg 162. Historica)8 x small cabinets with 2 cutlery drawers each and wire to hang towels or curtains on underneath the drawers. Lower open shelf under drawers to store crockery. Some cabinets have laminex on top. (later addition) -

Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. Federation University Historical Collection
Booklet - Diary, University of Ballarat / Federation University Student Diaries, 2004-2020
Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat has a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. The Gippsland Campus also had a long lineage dating back to 1928 with the establishment of the Yallourn Technical School which became a predecessor institution to the Gippsland College of Advanced Education formed in 1968. In 1990, it was renamed the Monash University College and in 1993 became the Gippsland Campus of Monash University. In 2016, Federation University Australia announced plans to take possession, over a two-year period, of Monash’s Berwick Campus in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. Federation University Australia, or FedUni, is headquartered in Ballarat and offers programs in Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training to regional Victoria and beyond. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. The name Federation University Australia was chosen to convey the scope and capacity of an expanded regional university with a federated network of campuses..1) University of Ballarat TAFE Student Association Diary 2006 .2) University of Ballarat Student Association Diary 2006 .3) University of Ballarat TAFE Student Association Diary 2007 .4) University of Ballarat Student Association Diary 2007 .5) University of Ballarat TAFE Student Association Diary 2008 .6) University of Ballarat Student Association Diary 2008 .7) University of Ballarat TAFE Student Association Diary 2008 .8) University of Ballarat TAFE Student Association Diary 2008 .9) University of Ballarat Student Association Diary 2009 .10) University of Ballarat Diary 2012 .11) University of Ballarat Diary 2013 .12) Federation University Diary 2014 .13) Federation University Diary 2015 .14) Federation University Diary 2018university of ballarat, federation university, diary, students association, david battersby, helen bartlett, student association, student union, kerry cox, levi laurie, student senate -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, 1880 - 1900
Mayday Hills Mental Hospital was originally constructed in 1864 under the name of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. It was built for locals in need of help who were kept in the local gaol. In its first decade, the residents of the hospital were used as menial labourers but over time, as mental healthcare progressed, were cared for in more nuanced ways. This site became a training hospital for nurses in the 1960's. Eventually, mental health patients were moved to other care facilities and Mayday Hills was operating as a geriatric care facility. It was closed in 1995, after which the buildings and their grounds were purchased to La Trobe University to be used as a campus. The university sold the site in 2011 to private ownership. This image depicts people enjoying the grounds and gardens.Mayday Hills Mental Hospital is a historically significant site for many factors. It is representative of healthcare practice in nineteenth century Victoria. It contains rare examples of construction and architecture. It is also significant for aesthetic and technical reasons.Black and white photograph printed on matte photographic paperReverse: at the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum/ (wade)/ do not copy - copy for Burke Museum/ for collection only only/ BMM 8326mayday, mayday hills hospital, mayday hills, mayday hills mental asylum, beechworth asylum, beechworth lunatic asylum, beechworth mental hospital, beechworth institution, healthcare, mental health, nurses quarters, nurses, gaol, garden, garden party -

City of Ballarat
Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Diana Nikkelson, Goanna Ground by Diana Nikkelson, 2006
This is an Aboriginal artwork that depicts a Goanna Totem. Designed by Ballarat-based, Gunditjmara artist Aunty Diana Nikkelson, the design is inspired by the artist’s totem and is a tribute to the first artists of the region, the Wadawurrung people. It acknowledges Aboriginal survival and the dynamic regeneration of the Aboriginal art and culture in the region. The artwork is in-set to the basalt paving along Police Lane by a series of etched footsteps, which evolve from human footprints to goanna prints as viewers approach the rear of the Art Gallery of Ballarat. The artwork was originally located only outdoors and half of it was brought into the Art Gallery of Ballarat in 2011, when the former Federation Plaza was enclosed to form the Art Gallery of Ballarat's McCain Annexe. The artwork was created in 2006 as part of the cultural festival of the Commonwealth Games. The artwork is of cultural and aesthetic significance to the people of BallaratSand blasted petroglyph forms into bluestone on laneway surface. Photograph, 386-384 Canterbury Road Surrey Hills
The donor, Bob Lennox believed that these were the work of his great-grandfather William Lennox and his builders. William and his son were plasterers and often used the shell motif which is seen on the pediment of the buildings. These two terraces were part of the retail development of five terraces along Canterbury Road which were constructed on land subdivided from the parcel of land originally owned by John Woodhead. The Alan Holt register of properties in 3127 gives a list of proprietors / residents at the beginning of each decade from 1890-1980. There are also earlier photos depicting these buildings in the collection. These buildings have been included in the City of Boroondara Heritage Overlay Union Road Commercial Precinct 2011, Surrey Hills. These buildings were amongst the first commercial buildings serving the area of Surrey Hills and followed the extension of the railway from Camberwell in 1883.A colour photo with rounded corners taken from slightly diagonally across Canterbury Road from 2 double-storey Victorian style buildings. Ceramic - Ceramic - hand built & coloured porcelain, Lo, Li Feng, 'Natural Series (Earth, Sky, Water)', by Li-Feng Lo, 2010
My work is informed by a philosophical and spiritual engagement with Buddhist ideas, particularly in response to environmental concerns. In this work I wanted to challenge myself and explore the limits of clay material. Clay allowed me to express myself and free my mind. When I revisited Australia in 2010 form my residency, the natural environment here still was the best to me. Li-Feng LO (1967- ) Born Taiwan Ceramic artist Dr Li-Feng Lo completed a PhD at Monash University in 2008. She was a resident artist in the Federation University Arts Academy ceramics studio in 2010. Li-Feng worked with Southern Ice porcelain to create sculptural forms in response to environmental concerns. Her work is informed by a philosophical and spiritual engagement with Buddhist ideas. These works were exhibited in the exhibition 'AIRed' at the Post Office Gallery in 2011. This was a group exhibition showcasing the work of six artists who undertook residencies at the Arts Academy over a couple of years. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Handbuilt (pinched), coloured porcelain form. Artist's Statement: In the beginning I try to use clay to achieve a dream-like quality by providing a feeling of flexibility like paper and fragility like glass. I was my artwork to the one with nature. Gift of the artist, 2010art, artwork, li-feng lo, ceramics, artist in residence, available, available ceramics, chinese -

Photograph, Fay Bridge, Toe-hold tree, Heritage Excursion, Killeavey, Laughing Waters Road, Eltham, November 2016
This scar or 'toe hold' tree fell over 50 yrs ago. It had died 50yrs before it fell and is estimated to be around 400 years old. It has a diameter of 1.3 m and is the only 'toe hold' tree in Nillumbik. Heritage Excursion - Killeavey Walk and Talk - Saturday 5th November Jane Woollard’s book Laughing Waters Road Art Landscape and Memory in Eltham devotes several chapters to the property Killeavey situated on the Yarra River at the end of Reynolds Road, Eltham. Jane has written about the natural history and indigenous history of the area and stories of the family who lived at Killeavey for many years. Killeavey was the home of Sir William Irvine, Victorian and Federal Parliamentarian and Supreme Court Judge. Later it was the home of his daughter Beatrice Morrison, a significant figure in the Eltham community. The original house was destroyed by fire and its replacement was demolished by Parks Victoria. Its sits high above the Yarra River and contains significant garden remnants. The surrounding bushland is valued for its significant plant communities. In September 2011 we visited Killeavey but without the benefit of the information more recently available from Jane’s research. We are fortunate that Jane will be joining us on this walk. There will be an extended stop at the house site for a discussion on the environment and history of the area. Inside the cover panels of Jane’s book is a reproduction of the complete artwork from ‘The Symbiogenesis Project: Laughing Waters 2011 by Aviva Reed and Paul Kalemba, as displayed in the Eltham Town Centre. This walk will start at 2 pm on Saturday 5th November at the corner of Laughing Waters and Overbank Roads. - EDHS Newsletter No. 230 October 2016fay bridge collection, 2016-11-05, activities, eltham, eltham district historical society, heritage excursion, kileavey, laughing waters road, parks victoria, cameron beardsall
