George Russell, from Scotland joined his brother Philip in 1831 in Tasmania, and farmed there for five years under his supervision. He then followed John Batman's exploratory lead to Port Phillip in March 1836. George Russell later established Golf Hill Station at Shelford. These memoirs describe first visits by Europeans to Lal Lal falls (which weren't running) and Mt Buninyong. These records must have been sought out by the AHRS as Russell had died before the Society was established.

Meek arrived in Australia in 1847. He was in Ballarat 1851-1853, and in later life he returned to Ballarat to live at the Benevolent Asylum. When he became very ill in 1898 his daughter Marianne Dallimore took him to live with her, and he died at her property near Warrnambool in 1899. He wrote these reminiscences for the AHRS, of which he was a member. He was an excellent penman and illustrator and he produced several extraordinary complicated works. He first dug for gold in Little Bendigo / Nerrina, in 1852. He died in 1909, a very old man, at the Ballarat Benevolent Asylum.

He mined during the rushes at various sites, eventually coming to Ballarat where he established a hotel now known as Craig's Royal Hotel. He held the first publican's license on Ballarat (1854) and his hotel was known as The Ballarat, later changed to Bath's Hotel; after the sale to Mr Craig in 1857 Thomas Bath established his farm Ceres, at Learmonth. Thomas Bath was instrumental in the formation of Ballarat and was a champion of all public institutions. He died in 1901. Central Highlands Historical Association [CHHA] is a vital link in the regional history network being the umbrella association for over 30 historical societies, museums and family history organisations in the central highlands region of Victoria. Ferdinand Von Mueller was the Government Botanist for the Colony of Victoria. He was an early examiner in Botany at the Ballarat School of Mines. The book was donated to the Ballarat School of Mines by the Melbourne Public Library. This book was awarded to Lilian Jane Tweedie in 1893 for First prize in Latin (Preparation). Lilian enrolled in Clarendon Ladies' College in April 1891. In the original register it lists parent as William, occupation Barrister and residence as 58 Doveton Street, South Ballarat. Lilian's sibling attending Clarendon Ladies' College is Sarah Florence (enrolled 1884). Siblings attending Ballarat Clarendon College are George (enrolled 1889) and Arthur (enrolled 1885). Presbyterian educators placed great value on a classical education matched with diligence in study. Book prizes were highly regarded and academic success admired. In the school’s early years prizes were ordered direct from London and had the school crest embossed in gold on the front or back cover. Solid wooden box with rope handles was used to move library books from the Library at Ballarat School of Mines to the E J Barker Library at Mount Helen Campus. The Mount Helen Campus Library was opened in 1973. At that time it was Ballarat Institiute of Adult Education. This was the fore runner of what is now Federation University. Albert E. WILLIAMS (1899-1986) Born Victoria, Australia Albert Edward Williams was among the first to undertake the five-year, Technical Art Teacher’s Certificate (TATC) at the Ballarat Technical Art School in 1915, with work placement at the Ballarat Lithographic company. Williams taught for several years before he was selected to undertake further teacher training at the Working Men’s College, Melbourne, in 1926. He returned to teach at Ballarat in 1928, facilitating many student activities, while pursuing the arduous Art Teacher’s Certificate. From its inception in 1914, it was 30 years before the first candidate achieved the certificate’s exhaustive requirements. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Keith Hamilton attended Ballarat Teachers' College, a predecessor institution of the University of Ballarat, graduating in 1955. He was made a life member of the Ballarat Y.M.C.A. in 1968 aged 91 years. Steane's lifelong interest in gymnastics brought him as much fame as his reputation as a headmaster. He organised the Education Department's gymnastics display at Bendigo's Golden Jubilee Exhibition in 1902. He played a major role in the establishment of the Ballarat Y.M.C.A. and from 1906 responsible for evening classes in physical culture. In 1968, aged 91, he was made a Life Member of the Association. Steane was in complete command of his school, his staff and students. It must be remembered that schooling was not as permissive, tolerant and informal as today. A.W. Steane retired in 1942 after 29 years as Headmaster of Ballarat Junior Technical School. Many visible memorials are evident of his time and influence on the growth of the Junior Tech. A good school also lives on in the memories and affections of its old boys. Many remained in touch to talk about "the old days". A simple lesson he taught was "Win Through". No matter what path was chosen by the students, many were true to his teaching. On his retirement, Mr Jeffery was appointed the new Headmaster. On 19 March 1942, a farewell meeting was held presided over by Mr Jeffery. Those present included A.F. Heseltine, G. Netherway (representing the Old Boys' Association), N. McHuthchinson (District Schools' Inspector), G.A. Simcock (High School), E. Youlden (Pleasant Street State School), and J.A. Ewins (Citizens' Representative).
