It was at the first international reunion of Vietnam Veterans held in Melbourne, in October 1988. It included a march down Swanston St to the Shrine. There are photos of Legatees outside Legacy House watching the veterans march past at 01578. The other photos include a meal provided at Legacy House after the parade at 01580. The 1988 parade of Vietnam Veterans in Melbourne was a significant event and Legacy provided rosemary sprigs for the event, a meal afterwards and Legatees attended. Other photos had a label which said 'The first international reunion of Vietnam Veterans was held in Melbourne in October 1988. Many of Melbourne Legacy's 'Legatees' stood to salute the marchers as they made their way to the Shrine of Remembrance.' The photo shows Legatees Pat Hanna (left) and Frank Doolan (right) with a wreath at a war memorial on Anzac Day in 1936. The wreath was an interesting design with a torch to resemble the Legacy logo. From the pencil note on the reverse it was thought it might be the cenotaph in Whitehall, London. Pat Hanna lived in London for a number of years. It might also be the cenotaph that was in Spring St, near Parliament house, until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. (see photo at 01371). The two were very similar in design as the Victorian one was a half size replica of the London one. Pat Hanna (born George Patrick Hanna; 18 March 1888 in Whitianga, New Zealand) was a New Zealand-born film producer ; he was a soldier of the First World War who entertained postwar audiences with the stage show 'Diggers', that was adapted to a film of the same title in 1931.An early Anzac day ceremony with a Legacy laying a wreath. The photo shows the cenotaph on the steps of Parliament House in Spring St after a wreath laying ceremony. There was a picket fence around the area which was erected for occasions (see the newspaper clipping from Anzac Day in 1928 copied from item no 01204). It is possible that the stamp on the reverse, '4 24', means April 1924, also see similar photos at 01203. From articles in Trove: The temporary cenotaph was the original first world war memorial until the Shrine of Remembrance was dedicated in 1937. The cenotaph was a half size replica of the London Symbol of Remembrance in Whitehall. It was made from timber and plaster and was initially meant to only last for the 1926 Anzac day service and be removed. A photocopy of 7 pages of Chapter 13 from Legatee Donovan Joynt's biography 'Breaking the road for the rest'. Legatee Donovan had received a VC in World War 1. Chapter 13 deals with Legatee Joynt's involvement with Legacy. It covers some of the early years of Legacy's history as he was present at the first luncheon. He mentions it was Mr PW Powell (Pip) that proposed the name Legacy - other accounts attribute the idea to Frank Selleck. It seems Legatee Powell suggested the idea but it was Legatee Selleck that proposed the formal motion and was documented in the minutes. Joynt mentions: "The speaker emphasised that the name Legacy was chosen because it the members of the new organisation had accepted as a legacy the responsibility of seeing that the ideals which their comrades had died fighting for were maintained in Australia." The Answer is a newsletter in magazine format that is sent to the widows that are helped by Melbourne Legacy. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. This edition contained articles on Prince Philip and his involvement with Legacy. Also Legacy's role in building the Shrine of Remembrance. An article outlining how our archive project led to the chance reconnection of a long lost diary to the family of Priscilla Wardle - a World War 1 nurse. An article on Youth Programs and camps. Legacy Week 2021 was again held in lockdown conditions in Victoria so there was a emphasis on a Legacy Teddy Bear Picnic and Legacy Bear Hunt. Other virtual fundraisers were 'Battle of the Bases' and 'Lunge for Legacy'. This pine tree (Allepo Pine, Pinus halepensis) a native of the Gallipoli Peninisula (Gelibolu, Turkey), was grown from a cutting obtained from the War Memorial Canberra and planted in the Mortlake Botanic Gardens in 2002. It replaces the original which grew outside the Mortlake RSL Hall which blew down in a storm c.2000. That tree (Allepo brutius)came from 'the original on Gallipoli' and was planted to commemorate 'fallen comrades' in 'the Jubilee year 1965.' However, two soldiers first brought home pine cones direct from that fateful battlefield. . One was Sgt. Keith McDowell of the 24th Btn. His aunt, Mrs. Emma Gray of Grassmere (Vic.) planted the seeds c. 1928 and four seedlings resulted. One was planted in Wattle Park, Melbourne, one at the Shrine of Remembrance, one at the Soldier's Memorial Hall at The Sisters (c.15 km. south of Mortlake) and one at the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. The First World War (or 'Great War') and in particular the battle for the Gallipoli Peninsula is of immense national significance. Lone Pine or Plateau 400 was the scene of a major offensive on August 6th 1915. All the trees on the ridge at this point were cut down but one, which was dominated by the 'Lone Pine'. In three days of fighting more than 2,000 Australians lost their lives and seven Victoria Crosses were won. Two Australian soldiers souvenired pine cones - one was brought back to Victoria (see above). Australia House is the oldest Australian diplomatic mission and it is the longest continuously occupied foreign mission in London. King George V laid the building’s first foundation stone in 1913 but it was not until August 1918 that he officially opened the completed building. The stringencies of World War I – principally shipping difficulties and labour shortages – had delayed construction considerably. Federation of the six Australian states formally took place on 1 January 1901 but it was not until 1906 that the Federal Government sent an Official Secretary to London to represent Australia. In the intervening years Australia was represented by State Agents-General, the first of whom was the Agent-General of Victoria. The building is significant for its unique design, Beaux Arts style and the materials used in its construction. In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. A newspaper article saved by the War Widows Guild, of a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Remembrance in 2004. It is an annual Legacy event. The War Widows Guild was founded by Mrs J M Vasey, the wife of Major-General Vasey. During the second world war she became secretary of the AIF Women's Association, a body which sought to help soldiers' wives. Her work with this body drew her attention to the plight of war widows. After Major-General George Alan Vasey died in an aircraft accident on 5 March 1945 she became a widow herself. At the end of the war Mrs Vasey founded the War Widows Guild. The Victorian War Widows Guild closed in 2021. Some items, including this article, were donated to the Legacy archive for preservation. It was possible for a widow to be members of both Legacy and the War Widows Guild. A circular sent to Victorian schools informing them of the 1995 annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students", held on 5th April 1995. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. They mention is it a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Each ceremony was attended by the Governor of Victoria, in 1995 it was Sir Richard McGarvie. A planting of a pine tree by Legatee Mal Huffman and two children at Aberfeldie Primary School. It appear in The Answer in June 1995. From the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns and schools throughout Australia. This may be part of that project (see the Lone Pine brochure at 00593) or subsequent propagation undertaken by Legacy. Melbourne Legacy’s Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation, presentation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Joynt was the seventh member of the newly formed Legacy in 1923 and became a member of the Board of Management in 1924 and worked closely with Stan Savige. He was also instrumental in gaining the support of both General Sir John Monash and the R.S.L. to build the Shrine of Remembrance, as well as ensuring media backing and thus public support for the project. He worked tirelessly for Legacy for 38 years until he retired at the age of 84, and entered fully into comradeship activities throughout his involvement. He won his VC in 1917 at Chuignes during one of the last battles on the Somme. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime and was instituted in 1856 by Queen Victoria. A programme of an art exhibition of 77 pieces of artwork by Lieutenant Daryl Lindsay in 1919. The Introduction was written by the war correspondent CEW Bean. Mr Lindsay's connection with Legacy is not known. A legatee Ray W___ donated this copy of the exhibition programme and the original of the cover print and a watercolour 'The road to Poperinghe' to Legacy in October 1984. At one stage they were in the Comradeship Room. As at December 2019 the original of the cover print is on loan to the Shrine of Remembrance and on display. The caption at the Shrine reads," 'Soldier'1918 by Daryl Lindsay (1889-1976). Daryl Lindsay was appointed an official war artist in 1917. He had worked as a batman for his brother-in-law Will Dyson, also an official war artist, from the end of 1916. Lindsay's sketches documented the facial injuries of soldiers, in order to assist then plastic surgeons undertaking facial reconstruction at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. His artistic skills led to his appointment as an official medical artist at the hospital in 1918." The notation H34 in red pen shows that it was part of an early archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A soldier put together artwork about World War One and exhibited it in Melbourne in 1919. Later two of his artworks were donated to Legacy.Dark brown cover with cream insert of a sketch of a solider. Colonel Sir Alfred Kemsley's reply to the opening speech delivered by Lieutenant General Sir Phillip Bennett KBE, AO, DSO when he unveiled the Memorial Plaque and opened the Donovan Joynt VC Club at Puckapunyal on 23 March 1983. Sir Alfred talks about his long friendship with Donovan Joynt, beginning with the battle in France in which Joynt won his VC, and acknowledging the difficulty he had in persuading Joynt to be memorialised by this project at Puckapunyal. He also cited Joynt's involvement with Legacy, which as a foundation member and an early Melbourne Legacy President himself Kemsley would have been aware. Together with his friend Donovan Joynt, Kemsley became one of the most committed advocates for the creation of a Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road as a 'worthy' memorial to Victoria’s 'unparalleled efforts during the Great War'. He played an active role in the defeat of a counter-proposal for an Anzac Square in Spring Street. A letter from Mrs Alwyn Drysdale on behalf of her husband Bob, to accompany photos of pine trees planted by him over time in various towns and schools. The trees had been organised by Legacy as part of their Lone Pine programme and he wanted to provide an update of their growth. Since the early 1970s Legacy had a commemorative programme of providing trees grown from seeds from Gallipoli to various towns throughout Australia. See the Lone Pine brochure at 00593. These trees were planted in the early 2000s. Melbourne Legacy's Commemoration Committee was responsible for the collection, propagation and dedication of Lone Pines from the 24th Battalion tree at the Shrine of Remembrance. On the 14th September 1989 further seedlings were collected with the hope to raise 1,000 trees from the seeds. Thus, Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The date is unknown. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. It is a photo of two school children laying a wreath at the Cenotaph while the main service is at the Shrine steps. They may have been junior legatees. It was with another photo of junior legatees laying a wreath which had two labels with conflicting names. It appears to be the same boy, Peter Manning. The label that could refer to this photo says: 'At Melbourne Legacy's Annual School Children's Anzac Commemoration this year Junior legatees, Gayle Goulding and Peter Manning representing all Junior Legatees, laid a wreath at the foot of the World War Two Memorial.' That would place it as being either 1981 or 1983. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. A special committee was convened to investigate matters raised by Legate A N Kemsley (Chairman of JLC) in a letter dated 22 January 1948. The committee comprised of Legatees Armstrong (Chairman), Blackall, Brain, Carleton, Kemsley, G Langley, Sheldon, and Vines. The matters were addressed in two groups, Loyalty and Training in Good Citizenship. Loyalty: recommendations included a framed photo of the King and Queen is displayed in all residences and rooms where classes were conducted; that a simple declaration of loyalty be recited as part of classes; that the Union Jack and Australian flag be displayed in all rooms where classes are held (flags would need to be procured as their present stock as 'small and in poor order'; that the offer to borrow items from the UK Information Office about the Royal family be accepted; that Anzac Day and the Shrine of Remembrance be discussed prior to Anzac Day at classes held in March and April; that Junior Legatees be encouraged to attend Legacy Ceremony at the Shrine on Anzac Day. Training in good citizenship: to use the Legacy camps to impress on the juniors aspects of appropriate behaviour and attitudes. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 22 April 1988. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos include Legatees lining up to greet the official party, which included President Alf Argent and the Governor of Victoria, Dr J Davis McCaughey, AC (see 01784). Also the Governor inspecting a group of cadets. Many Legatees attend and one photo shows Legatee Tom Robinson with the school children. The event included a fly past of 4 aircraft and speeches by the president, the Governor and two school children (see 01785). A bugler in red uniform performed (see 01787). There was a boys choir and girls choir either side of the Shrine steps. Other school children sat on the steps with wreaths to be laid in the inner sanctuary (see 01788). Two Junior Legatees laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of Junior Legatees (see 01789). The school ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV and Radio for many years.
