Photograph - Victorian Villa, High Street, c.1922
Subdivision plans are historically important documents used as evidence of the growth of suburbs in Australia. They frequently provide information about when the land was sold on which a built structure was subsequently constructed as well as evidence relating to surveyors and real estate and financial agents. The numerous subdivision plans in the Kew Historical Society's collection represent working documents, ranging from the initial sketches made in planning a subdivision to printed plans on which auctioneers or agents listed the prices for which individual lots were sold. In a number of cases, the reverse of a subdivision plan in the collection includes a photograph of a house that was also for sale by the agent. These photographs provide significant heritage information relating house design and decoration, fencing and household gardens. An old inscription on this photograph identifies it as ‘an elegant timber villa in High Street. It occupied part of Lot 91, bought by Edward Glyn in the land sale of 16th October 1851, and run as a flower farm’. The subdivision called the ‘Flower Farm Estate’ in East Kew occurred in 1922. [The subdivision plan is on the reverse of this photo.] The Estate included 61 lots on either side of Boorool Road between High Street and Harp Road. In the MMBW Detail Plan 2017 of 1926, a number of these new villas had already been built. Matching houses with MMBW maps can always be a challenge, however if this house was near the corner of Boorool Road and High Street, it seems to fit the profile of a house called ‘Maxton’ (demolished).Photographer's name on photograph, lower right, and stamp on mount lower right: "A. flag, After 1983
In 1983 the boxing kangaroo received national and international prominence when it served as the symbol for the successful Australian challenge for the America's Cup, where the boxing kangaroo flag, a red-gloved golden kangaroo on a green background, was flown from the yacht Australia II. Alan Bond (owner of the Australia II yacht) owned the image and licensed it for mass production. The image was later bought by the Australian Olympic Committee, and is used as a mascot to represent the Australian Olympic team and to promote sport and fair play in schools.A synthetic rectangular green flag of the yellow boxing kangaroo wearing red boxing gloves. -

This significant historical link in Melbourne’s water supply system is perhaps something we have taken for granted, or not even really noticed…it is just there! Built between 1886 and 1891 to transfer water from the Watts River near Healesville to the reservoir at Preston this aqueduct was 66 km in length and included open channels, tunnels and the use of inverted siphons to keep water flowing, to eventually service Melbourne and suburbs. At this meeting Jim Connor will talk about the challenges and achievements involved with this extraordinary project.1:09:10 duration Digital MP3 file; 23.7 MBaudio recording, eltham district historical society, meeting, society meeting, eltham, jim connor, maroondah aqueduct -

August Meeting (Newsletter No. 241, Aug. 2018) How do you consider designing an extension to a church that was built in 1861, just where do you start, especially when it is a church of local significance and listed by Heritage Victoria? The church in question was designed by architect Nathaniel Billings, built by well-known pioneer builder George Stebbing on land donated by Henry Dendy and is St Margaret’s Church in Pitt Street, Eltham. Adjoining this church is a large mud brick hall known to many of our Society members. It was also the venue for our 50th anniversary celebration dinner on 21st November 2017. At our Society meeting at 8.00pm on Wednesday 8th August 2018 architect David Wagner from Atelier Wagner will speak about the opportunities and challenges experienced in designing and constructing a contemporary style extension to this revered historical building, valued by the local congregation. Prior to becoming involved with St Margaret’s the Atelier Wagner architectural practice has, among an extensive range of projects, renovated and extended several churches. With this project there was also the challenge of incorporating, modifying and connecting the adjacent buildings that shared an entrance foyer.0:57:51 duration Digital MP3 File 20 MB audio recording, david wagner, eltham district historical society, jacqui wagner, meeting, society meeting, st margaret's church -

Literary work - Book, G. Sidney, Book of sermons by The Right Reverend Beilby Porteus Vol 2. Additional notes on authors life by Rev. Robert Hodgson, A.M.F.R.S, 1811 Published
Rev Robert Hodgson: His father was Robert Hodgson Snr, of Congleton, and Mildred (née Porteus) in early 1773. He was baptised on 22 September 1773 at St Peter's Church, Congleton. Hodgson was a close relative (by marriage on his father's side and by blood on his mother's side) of Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London of whom Hodgson wrote a biography of Porteus. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Augustine Warner Jnr., who presided as the Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses during the time of Bacon's Rebellion (Warner served before the Rebellion in 1676, and after the Rebellion in 1677.) Hodgson was educated at Macclesfield School and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he graduated with a BA as 14th Wrangler in 1795. He was appointed rector of St George's, Hanover Square for over forty years, from 1803 until his death in 1844. Bishop Beilby Porteus: Beilby Porteus 8 May 1731 – 13 May 1809), successively Bishop of Chester and London was a Church of England reformer and a leading abolitionist in England. He was the first Anglican in a position of authority to seriously challenge the Church's position on slavery. Porteus was born in York on 8 May 1731, the youngest of the 19 children of Elizabeth Jennings and Robert Porteus ( 1758/9), a planter. Although the family was of Scottish ancestry, his parents were Virginian planters who had returned to England in 1720 as a result of the economic difficulties in the province and for the sake of his father's health. Educated at York and Ripon Grammar School, he was a classics scholar at Christ's College, Cambridge, becoming a fellow in 1752. In 1759 he won the Seatonian Prize for his poem Death: A Poetical Essay, a work for which he is still remembered. He was ordained as a priest in 1757, and in 1762 was appointed as domestic chaplain to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, acting as his assistant at Lambeth Palace for six years. It was during these years that it is thought he became more aware of the conditions of the enslaved Africans in the American colonies and the British West Indies. He corresponded with clergy and missionaries, receiving reports on the appalling conditions facing the slaves from Rev James Ramsay in the West Indies and from Granville Sharp, the English lawyer who had supported the cases of freed slaves in England. In 1769 Beilby Porteus was appointed as chaplain to King George III. He was also Rector of Lambeth (a living shared between the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Crown) from 1767 to 1777, and later Master of St Cross, Winchester (1776–77). He was concerned about trends within the Church of England towards what he regarded as the watering-down of the truth of Scripture and stood for doctrinal purity. He was, however, happy to work with Methodists and dissenters and recognised their major contributions in evangelism and education. In 1776, Porteus was nominated as Bishop of Chester, taking up the appointment in 1777. He was Renowned as a scholar and a popular preacher, it was in 1783 that the young bishop was to first come to national attention by preaching his most famous and influential sermon. In 1787, Porteus was translated to the bishopric of London on the advice of Prime Minister William Pitt, a position he held until his death in 1809. As is customary, he was also appointed to the Privy Council, and Dean of the Chapel Royal. In 1788, he supported Sir William Dolben's Slave Trade Bill from the bench of bishops, and over the next quarter-century, he became the leading advocate within the Church of England for the abolition of slavery, lending support to such men as Wilberforce, Granville Sharp, Henry Thornton, and Zachary Macaulay to secure the eventual passage of the Slave Trade Act in 1807.Beilby Porteus was one of the most significant, albeit under-rated church figures of the 18th century. His sermons continued to be read by many, and his legacy as a foremost abolitionist was such that his name was almost as well known in the early 19th century as those of Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson but 100 years later he had become one of the 'forgotten abolitionists', and today his role has largely been ignored and his name has been consigned to the footnotes of history. His primary claim to fame in the 21st century is for his poem on Death and, possibly unfairly, as the supposed prototype for the pompous Mr. Collins in Jane Austen's novel ”Pride and Prejudice”. But, ironically, Porteus' most lasting contribution was one for which he is little-known, the Sunday Observance Act of 1781 (a response to what he saw as the moral decay of England), which legislated how the public were allowed to spend their recreation time at weekends these laws continued for the following 200 years until the passing of the Sunday Trading Act of 1994.Book of sermons cover is brown with gold border and decoration Beilby Porteus (or Porteous; 8 May 1731 – 13 May 1809), successively Bishop of Chester and of London, was a Church of England reformer and a leading abolitionist in England. Book, John Mordike, An Army for a Nation, A history of Australian military developments 1880-1914, 1992
For many Australians, Australia's participation in World War 1 is both an essential part of their national identity and an inevitable consequence of their British heritage; it is a popular view that Australia perceived its national interests and those of Britain to be one. In this major study, John Mordike challenges this view of Australia's past by exposing the competing national and imperial influences which shaped the foundation of the Australian Army. The book reveals how political ambition and electoral pressures subordinated a farsighted policy of defence self-reliance to the demands of imperial defence.Hard cover book, 310 pagesISBN 1 86373 192 Xmilitary history, mordike, australian army, colonial era, perfidious albion, military history, mordike, australian army, colonial era, perfidious albion -
Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages
Book, C C Culvenor, The boundaries of the Mount Franklin Aboriginal Reserve, 1992
"This enquiry into the boundaries of the Mount Franklin Aboriginal Reserve had its origins in the preparation of a biography of geologist Thomas Smith of Sandon, which raised queries about Boundary Gully Road, Parkers Gully and the location in that vicinity of the Reserve boundary. At a subsequent meeting of the Daylesford Historical Society, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Aboriginal Reserve at Franklinford in 1841, it became clear that the actual boundaries were only poorly known ... A search for information srouces in Melbourne and Sydney did not produce an overall Plan, but it is hoped that the material obtained will present a sufficiently accurate picture to be useful to other local historians and be of some interest also to the general reader" --Preface. She returned to the university as Artist in Residence in 2009. During her time at the University Debbie exhibited in many group exhibitions and her work was selected for the National Graduates Show at PICA in Western Australia. Debbie’s first solo exhibition was held at Space22 in Ballarat, towards the end of 2010. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 1000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Two artworks featuring a third dimension created with folded paper. Artist's Statement: "My artwork explores the visual experience that can be achieved using black and white, lineal patterns or by creating illusion and surface movement through the simple manipulation and repetition of forms. In these works I have used everyday objects, and shapes, repeated, reconfigured and recontextualised to provide the viewer with visual challenges that slow down and complicate the reading of the work. In the words of a former lecturer of mine, who kindly delivered the opening speech at one of my exhibitions – There is in Debbie’s work a belief in the transcendental power of repetition, a tribute in many respects to the fact that human kind is defined by nothing more noble and uplifting than its ability and obligation to persist."
