Photocopy of a transcript prepared by Lloyd Jenkins and draft copy with corrections in blue and black ink of an interview with Mrs. Edna Mader and Mrs Valda Busch at 220 Drummond St. South Ballarat on 28 January 1987. Mrs. Busch was 79 at the time, and Mrs Mader 74. Both worked at the ESCo and SEC offices in the customer accounts section, preparing accounts and associated paperwork. Reviews the system of accounts, meter readers, working conditions. Mrs Mader left the SEC in 1945, (first child) then returned later on as a machine operator until retirement at age 62 in 1974. Mentions some tramway staff. Notes Mr. W. J. K Dunstan who was the office manager in Ballarat, Mr. Charles Trethowan who commenced as the office boy in Ballarat and rose to be the Chairman of the SEC. Also notes social activities, WWII and the take over of ESCo by the SEC. Interview comprises 11sheets of A4 paper. Photograph - Parlimentary Party visiting Rocky Valley Dam site, 15-4-1948
This photograph was taken during construction of the Rocky Valley Dam and wall. Work was commenced in early 1947 but had to be suspended during winter and then resumed in October. Work continued in 1948 with the establishment of work facilities and, at the dam site, the river was diverted through a temporary pipeline. Rocky Valley and associated spillway and outlet works were completed in 1959.A pictorial record of the construction of the rock and earth filled dam wall at Rocky Valley. 1099.1 - photocopy of an article in The Courier, Ballarat Tuesday Feb. 9 1988, page 17 of the house that contained Ballarat ESCo tram No. 12 in the Tuesday Heritage Column of the newspaper. Contains a photograph of the house containing the tramcar. Newspaper Clipping details the former occupiers, the Rayner family, the construction of the extensions around the tramcar, family use, family history and some details of the family members and other local history. The copy of the newspaper Clipping has numerous pin holes in the corner and the rust marks due to use on a display on Tram No. 12 in a display board in the depot from about 1991 to 1998. From a copy made from the newspaper Clipping collection held by Alan Bradley. 1099.2 - copy made March 1999 of the same Clipping for record purposes and to have a good copy. (2 copies held). Photocopy of an article in the State Electricity Commission of Victoria Magazine, Contact, Vol 1, No. 4, Feb 1937 titled "Electricity Supply and Tramways / Reconditioning the Tramway Systems at Ballarat and Bendigo". Each item had a thin strip of paper attached by staple to the top left hand corner, giving the Vol. No. details. The item gives the background to the takeover from ESCo. Details some of the work undertaken in both Ballarat and Bendigo, including the widening of double track in McCrae St to 10' to allow ex MMTB trams to run. Work at Grenville St - City Loop, the method of track laying in Ballarat - concrete stringers, welded joints, financial arrangements for the work - employment council. Includes replacement of trolley wire. Features photos of reconditioned track on the Eaglehawk Route and a caterpillar tractor. Record revised 31/3/2019 to replace images with those from Andrew Cook CD and to include item .1 .1 - Item also was originally printed with different photographs in the Electrical Engineer and merchandiser Sept 15 1936. Richard Best was an Australian Textile industry agent and Businessman. While travelling in Belgium he contacted the de Stoop family, textile manufacturers, whose business had been closed down by German occupation after the 2nd World War. They took up Dick Best's offer to relocate and join with him to set up a textile factory in Australia. 1.Photocopy of letter dated 24/12/1914 handwritten by William Thomas Byrne of Docker's Plain whilst at training camp - 3rd light horse brigade train - to his sister. 2.Photocopy of brief summary of W.T.Byrne's life to when he was discharged in 1918 - photocopied from Docker Plains School Honor Book William Thomas BYRNE was born on 21/9/1890 at Docker Plains to William and Johanna Byrne. He was educated at Docker Plains and Wangaratta State schools. A farmer when he enlisted on 13/10/1914. He trained at Broadmeadows and embarked on Hororata on 17/4/1915. He served with the 3rd Light Horse and 12th and/or 27th ASC - Army Service Corps as a Driver. Newspaper article dated 7/11/2003 states letter was found inside second hand book and the writer of the letter identified as the uncle of local Wangaratta resident and historian Bill O'Callaghan. The letter written prior to embarking overseas was addressed to Mrs Connell Ford Street Wangaratta but intended for his sister Nora, a Nun at Brigidine Convent, Albert Park. The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Committee, also known as The Shillinglaw Cottage Preservation Society, also known as the Friends of the Shillinglaw Cottage collated and published a community cookbook "Flavour of Eltham", first published in 1964 to raise funds for the preservation and re-location of this historical cottage in Eltham. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.1). 46 Pages of an early A3 photocopy of the handwritten manuscript of 'Benvenuto Cellini' Overture written by Hector Berlioz and arranged by Frank Wright.
