Book, Speaking Personally - W Murdoch, 1946
This is a collection of essays written by Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970). He had a distinguished academic and literary career and is regarded as one of Australia’s greatest essayists. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in several Australian newspapers. Murdoch came to Warrnambool in 1901 as the proprietor of a private school. He left Warrnambool to take up a position at Melbourne University as an English lecturer. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and was later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him and he was knighted in 1964. He published over 40 books. This book is of interest as an example of the literary works of Walter Murdoch, a distinguished literary figure in Australian history and a person who has his place also in Warrnambool’s history. He came to Warrnambool in 1901, going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School and when Scott retired Murdoch became the sole proprietor and Headmaster of the school. While he in Warrnambool Murdoch continued to write and published in Warrnambool the school text book, ‘The Struggle For Freedom’. He left Warrnambool in 1904. This is a hard cover book of 186 pages. It has a blue cover which is slightly faded at the top of the spine. It has a dust cover in beige tonings with the title of the book and the author’s name on the spine and the same details on the front cover (beige printing on a maroon background). The front cover has a thin maroon line as an edging and the back dust cover features an advertisement for another Walter Murdoch publication. The book has a Preface, 31 chapters of short essays and an Index. The dust cover is frayed at the edges and discoloured on the spine. walter murdoch, history of warrnambool, warrnambool college, (early 20th century) -

Domestic object - Sewing Machine, 1911-1920s
This machine was made in Baden, Germany, for the Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who imported machines from various manufacturers and had them branded with their Ward Brothers decals. This machine is most likely dated after 1911, when the Ward Brothers became two separate businesses, as there are only remnants of two portrait decals on the machine bed. There is a fitted embedded ruler in the wood of the base. Many sewing machine manufacturers in Germany produced their machines specifically for export. A company could mass-produce its machines and give the same product several different brand names, according to their overseas buyers. There was a huge market for domestic machines as it enabled tailored clothing to be made in households at a fraction of the retail prices. Ward Brothers began in Australia in the late 1890s and early sewing machines sold by them had the three brothers on their decals. In 1911 the brothers divided into two separate firms, one operating on his own, the other two remaining together, and all still operating in Melbourne and at first still using the name Ward Brothers. This sewing machine is one of two hand-operated Ward Brothers machines in our collection that were made in Baden, Germany, and the only one that has the two Ward Brothers on its decal and that has side to side slide plates. This machine represents the early domestic market for sewing machines, making it possible for the everyday homemaker to produce fashionable garments and linen ware that was affordable. The owner of this machine could work at more than one location as it was portable and did not require a large space to set up. The machine is associated with the well-known Ward Brothers of Melbourne, who sold imported sewing machines that were branded with their own name.Sewing machine with case. The black-painted metal machine is hand-operated and the crank handle is wooden. The machine is on a wooden base and has a box included that contains many machine accessories. Made in Baden, Gemnamy, for Ward Brothers of Melbourne. There is an attached metal plate on the front with rows of groups of numbers on it. The wooden bed has an embedded ruler. The machine had decals with geometric designs and the maker's name.Printed in script: "Specially made in Baden / by Ward Broth Melbourne"flagstaff hill, warrnambool, maritime museum, maritime village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, sewing machine, hand operated, domestic sewing, homemade clothing, fashion, ward brothers, made in germany, baden, front and rear slide plates, post wwi, post 1911 -

The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. The project was greatly assisted by: • David McRitchie, Media Studies Lecturer Victoria College, Rusden Campus. • Ian and Annette Toohill of Wattle Studios • Tracy Naughton, Eltham Community Arts Officer • Neville Emerson Pty. It was also intended to hold the exhibition at a venue in the Shire’s North Riding from Monday, June 20 to Friday June 24. It was then displayed at the Were Street Theatre, Montmorency from Friday, June 24 to Thursday, July 7. Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary. It is a time capsule of life in the 1980s of this urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north. This is a set of 10 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in the Northern Territory and North Queensland in 1959 – 1960. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and tellurometers to measure base line distances between survey stations. Laplace survey observations seen in Photo .1P was a series of precise observations carried out at geodetic survey stations to determine astronomic latitudes, longitudes and azimuths to achieve maximum precision in the survey network. Laplace observations were necessary in a geodetic network at every 6th survey station, however the National Mapping Council specified at this time the spacing would be ideally between 4-6 survey stations. The cairn shown in photo .4P was built by RASvy as a landmark over a trigonometric survey station. It was dismantled in 1960 to enable re-occupation and survey observations. It was not restored to the condition shown in the photo. This is a set of 10 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in the Northern Territory (NT) and Queensland (QLD) in 1959 – 1960. Document - Details of applicants for OHM course, VIOSH: Ballarat College of Advanced Education Occupational Hazard Management Applicants, Intake 12A, 1988
Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Each application required details of their work occupation and the company work department they were employed in. Not all of those who applied began the OHM course. Some withdrew - no indication of reason. Intake 12A merged with 12B due to this.Eight pages with small portrait photographs of applicants - 4 per page.
