Alma Shanahan (1924-2015) was a Victorian potter who came to live at Clifton Pugh's Dunmoochin art colony at Cottlesbridge, on Melbourne's outskirts in 1953. Unable to join the co-operative proper, as she was a potter, not a painter, she built her house at the top of the hill, 135 Barreenong Road, Cottles Bridge. The c.1953 house is historically, aesthetically and architecturally significant because it is a good example of the design and ethos of mud brick dwellings synonymous with Eltham and features the extensive use of recycled materials, which was characteristic of the 'Eltham style' of architecture. Like the others in the artist community, Alma Shanahan built her own residence in stages out of local materials. Shanahan was later joined by neighbours and Dunmoochin potters Peter and Helen Laycock. She trained for a term with Peter Laycock but was otherwise self-taught, basing her practice on the teachings of Bernard Leach. After Pugh's death in 1991 she became the longest standing Dunmoochin resident. Her works are incised with her full name. Alma Shanahan was a part of the Dunmoochin Artist's community whose (other) members (Kevin Nolan, John Howley, John Olsen, Mirka Mora, Peter Laycock, Helen Laycock, Peter Wiseman and Chris Wiseman) made an important contribution to Victoria's cultural history. From the mid 1950s Pugh persuaded a number of other painters, as well as potters and other artists, to come and live at Dunmoochin and they formed one of Victoria's most important artist communities. She started potting around 1961 (aged 37). "Horse Power" was made using Chullora clay, which indicates it was made during her first seven years of production. Horse Power is about man's search for "energy" and how the "energy" can turn around. Made from Chullora (Sydney) clay. Construction of the Colac-Beech Forest railway line began in 1900 with about 100 men engaged in laying and ballasting the track, as well as others forming the earthworks and building culverts and bridges. The result of this labour saw the railway advance from Colac until it climbed a spur hugging the side of a forty degree slope emerging on top of the ridge at Beech Forest. This photograph was taken 28 miles (45 kilometres) from Colac between Devitt Bros. Siding and Ditchley, just out of Beech Forest. Two 2-6-2 Tank engines of the narrow-gauge A class built by Victorian Railway's Newport workshop, were commonly dubbed 'Coffee Pots'. As well as pulling a load of NQR wagons a NBB saloon car ended the train. The devastation to the standing timber was deliberate: the Engineer-in-Chief of VR ruled that all trees within a certain distance of the railway line were to be cut down. This certainly saved the line from destruction several times in the future.B/W. 1965 fire at the Bendigo Railway Station A dull explosion in the refreshment room about 1:30 p.m. touched off the blaze, which quickly spread and burnt out the station in less than an hour. Just before the explosion a train carrying more than 200 Melbourne-bound holiday makers pulled out of the station. Scores of railways employees in other parts of the station did not realise the refreshment room was on fire until a signal box attendant gave the alarm. Early estimates place damage at more than £100,000. Quick work by station staff saved many thousands of pounds worth of equipment before flames engulfed the building from end to end. At the height of the blaze, a Bendigo fire brigade Station Officer, Vin Lapsley, fell 18 feet – and miraculously landed on his feet – after being overcome by smoke while directing a hose from a ladder on to the roof. Gordon Rothacker died in 2010 at the age of 81. Harness Racing Victoria's (HRV) highest individual award, the Gordon Rothacker Medal, is named in his honour. Rothacker won a record 14 Melbourne drivers' premierships between 1949 and 1973 as well as capturing 10 Melbourne trainers' premierships between 1953 and 1976. He was the first reinsman to land 500 winners on Melbourne tracks, doing so at Moonee Valley in 1987 some 39 years after driving his first winner at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds as an 18-year-old in the inaugural season of night trotting. Awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday honours of 1972 for his services to trotting, Rothacker was the Caduceus Club's first living legend when inducted in 1995 and has also been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by HRV. An article in the Melbourne Age (2 March 1978, p. 25) recorded the retirement of Clare Ralph of Goullet of Melbourne (active 1953-78). "One of Australia's most talented milliners, Clare Ralph, of Goullet, is selling her business because she wants to spend more time in her garden. "I have been in the business for 25 years and last week I turned 60 and so I thought now is the time," Mrs. Ralph said at her Richmond shop yesterday. ... Mrs. Ralph is selling cheaply $10,000 for the label, which also covers sportswear, and tenancy and lease of the premises which have a showroom and workroom. ... Mrs. Ralph is as unpretentious as the relaxed Goullet styling which brought the new concept of millinery to Australia non-hatty hats with none of the "Melbourne Mum" quality so rife at the time. She said she started off making hats rather than dressmaking because she couldn't afford to buy the three yards of material necessary for a dress. "I wanted to get out of the house and so I did millinery night classes at Caulfield Tech." Her first efforts were sun-hats of natural straw which Mrs. Ralph trimmed extravagantly … "gold fishnet and braiding and sparkly jewels all over the crown. "They were ridiculous but a lot of fun," she said. She carted them by train to the city and nervously showed them to a store buyer. After the meeting, she couldn't face taking the samples home again on the train and left them. Before she could collect them, to everyone's amazement particularly Clare Ralph's, they had been sold. "The next thing was people were asking me what I was going to do for winter. I hadn't thought I was in the industry. I just thought I had sold a couple of sun hats and that was marvellous because I needed the money," she said. If the new buyer is interested, Clare Ralph will continue designing hats on a consultancy basis for them, which would be great for all the fans she has collected since those crazy sun-hat days.The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. Small black enamelled cast iron tobacco cutter mounted on wooden base. K36 painted on the bottom. Letter located in correspondence file ( 21.5.2019 by curator) 'This cutter was used to cut plug tobacco suitable for smoking in a pipe. It belonged to John Temple Rileywo died at the age of 97 at Hobart, Tasmania, October 1970. John Temple Riley led an eventful life. As a youth he trained and rode race horses at the Higginbotham stables quite near the Morphetville racecourse. He won one South Australian St. Ledger and rode the famous Carbine at track training only. In 1967 he was the only living person who had been astride Carbine. He served in Africa with the Tasmanian Imperial Bushmen. He was a sergeant in the Australian Light Horse Regiment in the Egyptian and Eastern Desert and at Gallipoli. He won an Italian decoration as well as Australian citations, he was promoted to Lieutenant J.H. Riley. He met with success in the mining field with his tin strike at Heemskirk on the West Coast.' This afternoon dress was owned and first worn in 1875 by Alice (Henty) Hindson, the daughter of Francis Henty and Mary Ann (Lawrence) Henty. The outfit was worn in the same year as Alice's marriage to John Hindson at Trinity Church, East Melbourne, and may have formed part of her trousseau. Alice's father, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.Alice (Henty) Hindson's afternoon dress is a two-piece, two-toned pink ensemble made of silk taffeta. The detailing is done with fine knife-pleated trims piped in ivory satin and decorated with ivory silk moiré bows on the bodice and skirt. The panelled peplum jacket is boned and the front button closure has hand-embroidered buttonholes with handmade covered buttons. The gathered full buttoned skirt falls into a train. The skirt is decorated with rows of ivory tulle corded lace and the hemline is edged with crisp fluted organza and tatted lace. Following a period of training of just two weeks, the Battalion embarked at Freemantle on the HMAT Ascanius on 2nd November 1914. The Ascanius formed part of a convoy of 38 Troopships carrying approximately 35,000 Australian and New Zealand troops and reached the Port of Alexandria Egypt on 2nd December 1914. After arriving in Egypt, the Battalion camped and trained at Mena, ten miles from Cairo, at the foot of the Great Pyramid Cheops. These medals are part of the Lawless Collection. The Lawless family lived in Orbost from 1907 - c 1920. John Francis Lawless had a saddlery shop. He died at an early age - 47 years - June 7 1912, leaving his wife, Elizabeth and seven children. The eldest son, Victor Rowland lawless volunteered for serv ice in WW1 but did not leave Australia because of illness. The second son, Edward Vincent Lawless (b 1895 d 1917) worked for McCoy & Co. in Orbost, coachbuilding, undertakers, general blacksmiths and farriers, prior to enlisting in WW!. He was trained as a signaller and was sent to France where he was killed in action on 9.10.1917. Elizabeth Lawless worked as a ladies' nurse (midwife) in Orbost prior to leaving the district in 1920. She lived to 6.6.1975 aged 104 years. The British War Medal was a medal given to people who had fought in the First World War. The Victory Medal (also called the Inter-Allied Victory Medal) is a First World War campaign medal of Britain and her then colonies and dominions which included Australia.These personal documents, photographs, medals and books give an insight into the human element of World War 1 ensuring that those who were part of the Orbost community and died while playing a vital role during this time are remembered.Two medals in recognition of service during WW1. 1846.3 is a silver medal a WW1 1914-18 British War Medal. Obverse: Bare head of King George V facing left; text around, 'GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP:'; the artist's initials 'B.M.' (Bertram MacKennal) are on the neck truncation. Reverse: Naked figure of St. George on horseback advancing right trampling a shield bearing an eagle design and a skull and crossbone. It has a blue/white/orange striped ribbon attached. 1846.4 is a gold coloured medal. The obverse in the medal shows the winged, full-length, full-front, figure of 'Victory' with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. The reverse has the words ‘THE GREAT / WAR FOR / CIVILISATION / 1914-1919' in four lines, all surrounded by a laurel wreath. This notice relates to the prohibition of lighting fires,drying clothes or bringing inflamable material near any of the bridges in the shire. Offenders will be prosecuted. With a date of 1882 and the fact that bridges were mostly made of wood, it would have been of concern that the destruction of bridges was not only of great inconvenience but also of considerable expense. But the reality of bridges providing shelter and warmth in the colder months and the ensuring fires and burnt bridges has more than likely precipitated this notice. J W Crawley was shire engineer from 1876 until 1895 and for 10 of those years he trained his son J W Crawley who succeeded his father and served in the position for 40 years.He in turn was succeeded by his son Rolf Crawley in 1935. In 1963 the bridge over the Hopkins Falls at Wangoom was named the Crawley bridge in honour of service to the Shire of Warrnambool by members of the Crawley family. The Shire of Warrnambool was proclaimed in 1863 and covered an area of over 600 square miles. Much of it was incorporated into the Moyne Shire in the 1990's with some being included into the boundaries of City of Warrnambool. This banner is an interesting piece of history. It shows the issues confronting early settlers such as shelter and the chores of daily life but also the importance placed on infrastructure which was slowly taking place around the district. It was in the era of drainage and roadworks and hence bridges were an important part of that infrastructure. The name J W Crawley is one of importance in the Warrnambool district for his service over many years. Rectangular piece of cloth printed in black ink. PS Pevensey was the last vessel to be built on the Moama slipway in 1910. it was originally built as the barge Mascotte a year earlier. It is powered by a 20hp Marshall and Sons steam engine and was first used on the Murrumbidgee River where it collected wool bales and brought them back to Echuca where they were loaded onto trains and taken to Melbourne for shipping overseas. The PS Pevensey was named after the Pevensey Station on the Murrumbidgee River. In the 1950's it travelled to South Australia where it survived being burnt and sunk but continued to keep working in the agricultural industry. It was sold to the Port of Echuca in 1973 where it was restored over 3 years and is still the largest vessel operating from the Echuca Wharf. In 1982, it was temporarily renamed The Philadelphia, and starred in the TV mini series " All The River's Run" based on the books by Nancy Cato. In 1985 Prince Charles and Lady Diana visited Echuca and cruised on the PS Pevensey, although it was labelled PS Philadelphia for the occasion. It is the largest vessel operating from the Echuca wharf as it can carry 90 passengers or 120 tons of cargo. PS Pevensey is a Murray River paddle steamer from 1910 and was built at Moama in NSW opposite the Port of Echuca. It was one of the largest towing and cargo paddle steamers on the river and was known as "the great Clydesdale" of the river. PS Pevensey remained operating on the river until 1958 after a number of years lying dormant it was purchased in 1973 and restored at Echuca. It began operating again in 1976 and it is still taking trips. it is one of a small number that still operates in its cargo carrying layout and with its original reconditioned engine. Coming back to Echuca PS Pevensey brought Kevin Hutchinson OAM to work at the Port of Echuca for the rest of his life.A side wheeled paddle steamer.
