Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. After meeting for 14 years in rented premises, in the Prince of Wales Hall, Wodonga Council built its first Shire Hall on the corner of High and Elgin Streets in 1890. In January 1877, a contract was let to add the brick building to the existing structure. This court house opened in June 1877. This gabled court house was designed by architect Peter Kerr and was constructed at a cost of £1,325. It served as the court house until it was replaced in 1920. It was then used as a private residence for many years. At various stages it was also operated as a restaurant, a real estate agency, an antique shop and currently operates as commercial offices.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century.A black and white image of the original Court House and Police paddock. As the notations centre of the board states “there is gross errors and emissions etc”, “refer to Appendix One of A Century of Service”, the history of the RSL Bendigo, Cat No 8093. The true roll starts 2015/16. Also stated “As of 28.10.2000 - Bendigo District RSL”. Names were added on this role up to approx 2015. As a new Honour Board was being put together to combine the old & new RSL Sub Branch it was decided to omit the names on the old board so it only reflected “Bendigo RSL”. The new board will be placed in the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Havilah Rd plus also contain Life Members. The old board will remain in the Soldiers Memorial Institute Building. Handwritten list of Life Governorships awarded to various people from the RVIB during the 1930s until the 1950s. Entries include the name and address or township of recipients, and later a date column was included. No information is included on why a Life Governor was granted however this was usually in recognition for the funds donated to the institution. This amount was dependent upon the time of the contribution. In the Constitution and Rules section of the 1872 Asylum and School for the Blind Annual Report: Membership - Every Subscriber of 10s., and upwards per annum shall be a Member of the Institution, and every donor of 20 pounds and upwards, a Life Member. Auxiliary members who were appointed Life Governors were usually involved in helping organise some of the many fundraising activities, such as the Auxiliaries Annual Three Day Fair. A Life Governorship also meant that the person would have a vote when it came to some decisions made by the Committee of Management. RVIB Life Governors are listed cumulatively in the annual report until 1935 when, due to reasons of space, it was altered so that names appeared only in the year that they were granted. Joyce Hayward was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1981 for services to the arts in Warrnambool. The British Empire Medal was instituted in 1917 as part of the Order of the British Empire and in 1922 became a separate award known as the British Empire Medal. Joyce Hayward came with her husband Cyril to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years they were the dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Joyce Hayward was the Director of the Warrnambool Theatre Company from 1955 to 1985 and directed more than 80 plays and musicals. She founded the Warrnambool Calisthenics Club, helped develop the Holiday Actors organization and was a key figure in the revival of the Warrnambool Arts Council in the 1970s. She was a Life Member of the Warrnambool Theatre Company. She also helped establish the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. She received the Warrnambool City Council Citizenship Award in 1970.It is a significant honour to be awarded a British Empire Medal and the acquisition by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society of the medal awarded to Joyce Hayward is of considerable importance. It is a rare item.This is a silver medal with a bar attached and clip at the back for the wearer and a red corded ribbon in a bow form on the silver attachment at the top. Mate opened his first store in Albury in 1850. The company was sold to Burns Philp in 1946, although they continued trading as Mate’s. Burns Philp policy was to maintain the identity of stores they took over with the same staff and management. The Mate’s store in Wodonga was built by local builders A. B. and M. A. Chick. It was a 3 level development in High Street opposite Woodland Grove. It included a mezzanine eating area. Mate’s closed in 1976 when Burns Philp sold the business to Waltons. In 1987 they became Venture Stores. This building also later became Highpoint and Fosseys which closed in 2000. Doctor HAROLD ROBERT CATFORD was the first to be made a Life Member of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. The certificate was signed on the 8th Day of May 1947. He was first elected to Committee of the Bendigo Branch in 1918 and retired after 29 years at the AGM 1947 serving the whole time as Vice President. Doctor Harold Robert Catford enlisted as a Captain on 23.6.15 age 41 years and attached to HQ 29th Batt AIF. Embarked for overseas 10.11.15, transfer to 8th Field Ambulance 6.10.16. At various times he was attached to 5th Div Ammunition Column and 2nd A.C.C. Station, promoted to Major 24.8.17. He returned to Australia on 26.9.17 for personal reasons and his appointment in the AIF was terminated on 11.12.17. from 1.1.18 he was RMO to several military units including the 38th Batt in Peace time. Promoted to Lt Col on 19.4.23, placed on the AAMC reserve list 30.1.30 and then the retired list 30.1.1934. Life membership certificate of the Bendigo RSL awarded to Dr HR Catford. Certificate is set in a yellowish cardboard frame inside a silver wooden frame. The certificate is in colour with a red seal and signatures of Federal President and Secretary of the RSSILA. The Wodonga Post Office was constructed on the corner of Sydney Road (High Street) and South Street in 1874. It was Wodonga’s second Post Office. The original post office opened on June 1, 1856 near Wodonga Creek. This building was originally built of red brick, although it was later painted over in white. It had an attached residence in South Street and was connected to it by a door. The residence was later demolished to move the mail boxes which had faced High Street, to South Street. The brick Telephone Exchange was constructed in 1946 behind the Post Office but separated from it. It operated as a manual exchange until the late 1960’s or early 1970’s. In 1985 a new post office was opened further south in High Street. This building, greatly renovated, is now part of the Wodonga Community College.This photo collection is significant as it documents how the businesses and buildings in Wodonga have evolved and contributed to community throughout the 20th century. Mrs. Margot Eddy was a member of the Creswick Red Cross Society for over 40 years. Creswick Red Cross was established in 1915 after the outbreak of WWI. Mrs. Eddy received her 40 year bar in 1977; she was President of the Creswick Red Cross for 10 years up to 1975. This plaque is the name plate of one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors. Alfred Ernest Brauer came to Warrnambool after graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1927. He initially took up the position as resident medical officer at the Warrnambool Base Hospital before entering private practice. he was appointed honorary medical officer at the hospital and was a life member of the Hospital board , serving as its president from 1952-54.he was a founding member of the South Western Victoria Ambulance service.as vice president, a position he held until his death in 1972.He had wide sporting and community interests including cricket, football, and horseracing. He was a founding member of the Warrnambool Lutheran church and was closely associated with Warrnambool High School and Warrnambool Technical School. he died in September 1972 and was survived by his wife and three daughters. His practice was situated in Koroit StWarrnambool, firstly at Ambleside where he also lived, then later on the other side of the street , in practice with a number of other doctors. A link to one of Warrnambool's longest serving doctors who contributed to the city in a wide range of roles. The first site to be sold in Ballarat, where in 1853 Thomas Bath erected a timber building for use as a hotel. Parts of the present hotel date from 1862, when Walter Craig was owner. The hotel is associated with many historic figures, and no other hotel in Victoria has such an interesting succession of buildings and additions. Wodonga Civic Centre - In the late 1960s the area in Wodonga between Hovell and Havelock Streets was zoned for civic purposes. By 1969 Melbourne architect Bruce Marshall had designed the civic centre which included a library, theatre and senior citizens' rooms. The main hall had a seating capacity of 1,000 people but could be divided by a sliding door. into smaller areas. It also included meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. The Civic Centre was officially opened by the Honorable Sir Henry Bolte, K.C.M.P., M.P., Premier of Victoria who was accompanied by the Honorable R. J. Hamer E.D., Minister for Local Government. The Shire President was Cr. James A. Terrill, J.P. WODONGA'S SECOND POLICE STATION - This building was located on the west side of High Street near the railway line at the corner of High Street and Bond Street. The building in the background was the Bond Store which was later repurposed to become the Court House. This Police Station, which began operation on this site c1905, had originally been the house of the customs officer. It had a front office and a Sergeant's and an Inspector's office as well as 2 barrack rooms and a laundry at the rear. In the backyard was a blue stone cell block and a night soil toilet, as well as a stable used previously for horse and carriage. Opposite the police station was a boarding house which supplied meals to prisoners. WODONGA'S SECOND COURTHOUSE The Court House was situated in the Customs or Bond Store building alongside the Wodonga Police Station in 93 High Street. This was on the west side of High Street at its intersection with Bond Street. The building was converted to the courthouse in 1920. In early 1964, the courthouse building was burnt beyond repair and furniture and other property destroyed. The cause of the fire was never found. The Police Station was lucky to survive but only because of the efforts of the local Fire Brigade. After the fire, the court was held first at the old Fire Station premises near where the present Wodonga Post Office, then it moved to a vacant building in Mitchell Street which was later turned into a Child Care Centre. She also held a range of roles and committee positions in a wide range of Wodonga community organisations. WODONGA's 3rd Police Station and Court House were constructed in Elgin Street, Wodonga. The Court House had to be relocated after the earlier building had been destroyed by a fire in 1964. In 1966, the new Wodonga Police Station was built but lay empty and idle for about three months. The reason given was that no furniture was available. After this situation was remedied the station was opened on December 23, 1966. The previous police station was vacated and pulled down. The new station was built in front of the new court house, which had been operating for approximately 12 months. The Police and Court House continued to operate on this site until they were again relocated in 2002.
