Newspaper Clipping - set of three clippings adhered to both sides of a sheet of ruled quarto paper with punched holes on the left hand side - various newspapers. .1 - "Tram Lines" - full page - from Melbourne University newspaper - Farrago - Friday April 11 -1969 - Titled "Tram Lines" with a photograph and story of MMTB Driver Cyril Tucker, Kew Depot, written by John Steed. Cyril joined the MMTB in 1922. Gives Cyril's thoughts on being a Trammie, notes the issue of the "scabs" - Tom Pesteranovich and Brooker (see Reg Item 2561). Has two photos and a cartoon sketch of the front of a tram. .2 - "Let's get rid of trams" - Letter to the Herald 11/4/1969 - written by David Crowther - Beaumaris - about trams cluttering the streets - got rid of even in Brisbane. Has a photograph of a tram stuck in traffic in Toorak Road. .3 - "Brisbane Trams Farewell" - Herald - 14/4/`969 - notes closure of Brisbane tram system. One of a series of tram / bus tickets known as "Schoolboy Howlers" - with a joke line on the rear and that Melbourne's trams and buses were carrying 1,000,000 passengers per day. Use to promote advertising on rear of tickets. Has the saying "It is nice to go damsel picking in the Autumn". Ticket 4d - has been punched "Out" for Section 4. The figure of 1,000,000 likely to be a bit of puffery, though on some days that may have occurred during the 1940s. See item 6949 for about 60 different schoolboy howlers. An early use (1980) of a combined rail/tram/bus ticket for the Melbourne central area within a defined area. On the rear are conditions of travel, allowing travel within the metro area on trams, trains and buses. Month and day were punched at the time of issue. Ticket - 2d black printing on off white paper, over printed in red for "City Section". Ticket No. M472012. Has a Fishers Ink advert on rear. See htd3959doc.pdf for a detailed investigation of the ticket, where it was found and discussions with the donor. Summary - found in an archaeological dig for 74 Collins St - see htd3959doc1.pdf - which gives the background to the history of the site. Ticket found nearby a 1928 paper. Gary Davey, see htd3959doc for background could not date the ticket, though is landscape format and single row of punch marks are of note. Most likely c1928. Form completed in pencil by L Prosser, No 2675 2. - Printed form on off white paper titled "M&MTB Conductor's Pay in slip", form number 3/135, dated March 1972. Enabled the conductors to record what amount they paid into the revenue office, with space for table number, name, out fit number, amounts, number of swimming tickets and signature of revenue clerk. See Reg Item 1460 for a 1988 and 1769 for a Feb. 1977 examples. 3. - Form - printed on off white paper, form No. 3/203, titled "Conductor's Running Journal", to be used by conductors to record trips, fares sold along with crews names and number. Has fares from 10c to $1. In right hand margin, has Control phone numbers. 4. - Printed form on off white paper titled "Weekly Record of Conductors Ticket Outfit", form 3/137, Aug 1975 - training or sample form as has starting or commencing numbers for ticketing printed onto the sheet. Set up for a six day week, closing numbers for each day, tickets from 10c to $1.00 city, conductors name, depot, person who extended or completed the sheet and checked it. Enabled the revenue clerks to tally the amount that should have been paid in by a conductor against the actual amount. Book - 144 pages+ hard cover + jacket - six sections sewn with end papers titled "The Melbourne Cable Trams 1885-1940", written by Jack Cranston and signed by Jack on the title page. Ephemera - Ticket/s, Tramway Board, Trip Slip - cable tram Bell Punch type, late 1910's
Used by a cable tram conductor to record the number of 2d fares collected from passengers. The Bell punch recorded the number of times a hole was punched in the slip. They were used by the cable trams until the mid-1920s when they were phased out and replaced by "flimsy" paper tickets. The item has been punched many times. Printed for the Tramway Board (1916 to 1919). Has space for 44 journeys. On one side, has space for the name Line, Date, Badge, car, time of starting, and signature, if a student conductor. Printed for use in the down direction. ... . Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D382. A heavy nickel ...Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D382. A heavy nickel plated steel ticket or fare strip cancelling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company. Lock code IDMA.
