The first electrical hearing aids were carbon and were made possible by the invention of the carbon microphone and were made between 1900 and 1939. Carbon, which can be made to amplify electrical current, was used to provide some amplification prior to the invention of vacuum tubes. Later models often came with mechanical (carbon) amplifiers to try to boost the amount of amplification. The carbon microphone was originally invented for use in the telephone and had the properties of being able to modulate current. There has been a fair amount of confusion about this object as the paperwork states that a 'greenstone' gavel with a maori head carving and plaque mounted on green nephrite stone' was gifted when in fact the gavel is made of wood with a silver plaque. There has been no suggestion made as to what happened to the greenstone gavel. We can assume that it was lost or stolen and replaced with a plain wooden one that we now hold at ANZCA. From the attached plaque the Gavel was gifted to the Faculty of Anaesthetists by the New Zealand Fellows of the Faculty in 1965. This photograph is of the viewing room inside the building, this side with windows overlooking the machinery and a video screen with a switchboard to run the video. One of a series of photographs of the Rutherglen Gold Battery. Its purpose was to crush quartz from nearby quartz reefs and extract gold from within. The battery was erected in 1908 and consists of a five-head battery, Wilfrey table, Bergin pan, portable steam engine and shed. The battery was restored in 2011/12 and can be viewed daily between 9.00am and 5.00pm. Lindisfarne – also known as Holy Island – is one of the most important centres of early English Christianity. It can be reached by car at low tide as there is a causeway across to the Island. Irish monks settled here in AD 635 and the monastery became the centre of a major saint’s cult celebrating its bishop, Cuthbert. The masterpiece now known as the Lindisfarne Gospels was created here in the early 8th century. There is a small village on the island, with a church still in use. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance in April 1990. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The couple from this photo has gone through great hardship in the period they spent as refugees. They fled Southern Vietnam (Ca Mau) after the Vietnam War in late 1979 when the chinese have invaded and settled in Vietnam. They came on the #91 boat called Minh Hai 375 and arrived at the island on 10/22/1978. Prior to that they were ambushed by pirates who tried to rob, rape and completely take advantage of the vulnerable state the refugee people in. They recall having to purposely sink the boat so that they can be allowed into the country.This photo is great evidence to the family value Vietnamese refugees hold in the period of the period of fleeing the poor conditions that exists back in their country. People put their life online just to HOPE for a better life. Family portrait of a couple and first born child (son) in front of what look like their home at the time. This was taken at 1979 on the island called Pulau Bidong. It's a photo which has been laminated onto a light blue backing paper. This is an artist's impression in reproduction of the Mechanics Institute building as it was in the 1880's. It has since changed quite significantly, especially what can be seen of the surrounds. The insert picture is an impression of the Industrial Pavilion which, as is stated, was used between 1856-1864 as temporary premises for the Institute. In the early 1900's, E.B. Jones developed a small glass churn for home use. Nathan Dazey purchased Jones' business and relocated it to St. Louis, Missouri as the Dazey Churn and Manufacturing Co. Dazey churns were manufactured up until 1945. Although best known for its butter churns, the company also made can openers, knife sharpeners and other kitchen products. Thes churns were widely used throughout households in rural Australia during the first half of the 20th century.This item was typical of kitchenware used widely in the early twentieth century when households produced more basic food items. A round glass churn with metal lid and mechanism. The handle was turned to rotate the paddle at the base of the mechanism in the jar. A letter from the M.B. Ryan, Deputy Commissioner of Department of Repatriation about a meeting with Legatee Frank Doolan in November 1925. They had met to discuss Legacy wishing to cooperate with the department in the administration of its Scheme for the Education of the Children of Deceased and Totally Permanently Incapacitated Soldiers. He goes on to outlines ways Legacy can help and details of the scheme. The notation H48 in blue pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A speech by Legatee Dono Joynt at a Legacy luncheon on 28 October 1952. His talk mentions that 'Harelands' the Club's fourth residence about to be opened. The Club was in need of funds for the next year. He says; 'I am convinced that this Club can FACE anything, and DO ANYTHING and OVERCOME anything, if the members of the Club are STRONG enough in their desire for whatever it is they want to achieve.' which is the theme of his speech. Most, including L/- Bannister, are holding envelopes and it is possible they are representative of charities receiving donations from an organisation - perhaps the Army. It can be seen that one person is from the RSL, and another from The Salvation Army. The photograph show legatees posing with the uniform that belonged to Legatee Joynt after an address commemorating Donovan Joynt VC on 24th October 1989. The army uniform was at Legacy House just before it was donated to the Australian War Museum in Canberra. An article published in the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about the event contained the address given by L/ Holdsworth (01599). Other photos at 01604 show Legatee Holdsworth can be seen reading from the album which was compiled about the life of L/ Joynt VC (Cat.No. 01588). A photo of two soldiers working on tins and barbed wire at Gallipoli. One man is working with a strip of barbed wire on an anvil. They are surrounded by discarded cans. It was with 11 other photos of World War One that had been mounted on board for display at Legacy House at some stage. When they were taken off display they were put in the archive cabinets. The founding legatees all served in World War One so these photos would have been of significant places for them. In 1955 the Executive Officer of Melbourne Legacy, Ivan Layton, composed a song for the Junior Legatees to sing. It was lift out supplement to the Newsletter on 9 June 1955. The lyrics are: We are the children of Legacy and we're proud as proud can be. A burning torch we carry high, the symbol of Legacy. Our fathers left Australia to fight for you and me and gave their lives unselfishly: So their comrades-in-arms took up the torch and help us like their very own.
