Map - Australia Shewing the Tracks of the Late Explorers, c1865
Charles George Eastland Platts arrived in South Australia on 22 March 1839, and soon after established his business in Adelaide. He became Adelaide’s first bookseller. It was known as Platts’ Library but was also a bookshop and stationer. His business was also used as a postal receiving house. Platts died on 14 November 1871. Boyle Travers Finniss (18 August 1807 – 24 December 1893) had an early career in the British Military before selling off his commission in 1835. He was appointed assistant surveyor to Colonel William Light in South Australia. He then had several roles in public service. Finniss was the first premier and Chief Secretary South Australia, serving from 24 October 1856 to 20 August 1857. In 1864 he was appointed as the Government Resident of the Northern Territory. He was filling this role at the time when the map was produced and is acknowledged on the map. This is a very early map documenting the exploration and opening up of Australia.Map of Australia and part of Indonesia. Plan, Burrumbeep, 1884, 16/10/1884
Auctions of Crown land were introduced in the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to encourage settlers to occupy and work the land. Many squatters purchased land at auction at the upset (minimum) price of £1 per acre. In some areas where demand was high, such as the goldfields, the price realised at auction was much more. Land was put up for sale in the study area on the Burrumbeep run in May 1855, on the Lexington run in 1857, and on the Gorrinn run in 1858. (http://www.ararat.vic.gov.au/library/document/thermatics.pdf, accessed 27 January 2015) For 70 years or more, Yalla-y-Poora, Burrumbeep, Edgarley, Mount William and Narrapumelap ranked in the leading wool producers in Victoria. 1 Stud owners at Yalla-y-Poora, Eurambeen, Burrumbeep and Challicum crossed merino sheep with sheep descended from John Macarthur's Camden Park in New South Wales. Kew Historical Society Inc
Photograph, J F C Farquhar, Bird's Eye View Looking North, 1891
At the beginning of the 1890s, the Kew businessman and Town Councillor, Henry Kellett, commissioned J.F.C. Farquhar to photograph scenes of Kew. These scenes included panoramas as well as pastoral scenes. The resulting set of twelve photographs was assembled in an album, Kew Where We Live, from which customers could select images for purchase. The preamble to the album describes that the photographs used the ‘argentic bromide’ process, now more commonly known as the gelatine silver process. This form of dry plate photography allowed for the negatives to be kept for weeks before processing, hence its value in landscape photography. The resulting images were considered to be finely grained and everlasting. Evidence of the success of Henry Kellett’s venture can be seen today, in that some of the photographs are held in national collections. It is believed that the Kew Historical Society’s copy of the Kellett album is unique and that the photographs in the book were the first copies taken from the original plates. It is the first and most important series of images produced about Kew. The individual images have proved essential in identifying buildings and places of heritage value in the district. This panoramic view was probably taken from the roof of Xavier College. It invites the viewer to look down on the buildings and streets of Kew, and across to the distant horizon. Mansions and solid bourgeois villas dominate the view of Charles and Wellington Streets. The imposing spires of the Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, built in one of the highest areas of Kew, can be seen in the distance. In the foreground, the photographer includes three significant mansions: Molina, Roxeth and Elsinore. Molina, in the foreground, and the group of weatherboard buildings in its yard was used at this stage for the privately operated ‘Kew High School’ (founded 1872). Roxeth, the home of Herbert Henty can be identified by its distinctive four-sided tower. All three buildings are now part of Trinity Grammar. Other built structures observable in the photograph include Wilton (now the Kew RSL), designed by Guyon Purchas for Dr William Walsh in 1886, and the only known image of the Prospect Hill Hotel prior to the renovation of 1935. black and white photograph, March 4 1937
This photograph of the Orbost Municipal Band was taken for the 1937 Back To Orbost celebrations. The band is wearing new uniforms, bought especially for the occasion and for subsequent use. The double-breasted navy jackets have three pairs of silver buttons, three silver stripes on the cuffs and a silver lyre on each lapel. the bandmaster's stripes were gold. The jacket was worn with a white shirt and a bow tie. The caps were navy blue with a silver braided band and a central lyre. There were 29 members at this time. The first Orbost Brass Band was formed in 1889. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. Document, photocopy plan 'Two Acre Village 'c1852, c1960
In the 1852 Josiah Holloway, a developer, purchased 625 acres from the squatters Richard and John King and sectioned '2 acre allotments' south of Henry Dendy's Brighton Survey along the Arthur's Seat Road ( later Nepean Highway) for sale @ £10 It became known as The Two Acre Village as settlers took up the allotments and established market gardens, general stores, butchers, blacksmiths, post office and 2 hotels. Charles Whorral opened The Cheltenham Inn and it became so popular as a meeting place that the area was called Cheltenham. The early settlers, who were predominantly English and Scottish immigrants initially leased their allotments and, because the sandy soil was so fertile, they were soon able to purchase the land and increase their acreage. Cheltenham became a very important part of the large Moorabbin Shire1871 and City of Moorabbin 1934 In the 1994 Amalgamation of Councils, when the large City of Moorabbin was divided between the newly formed Glen Eira, Kingston and Bayside Councils, the Cheltenham area was assigned to the City of Kingston A photocopy of the Plan for the 2 Acre Village in Moorabbin Parish c1852. Image taken on a bus trip, 26 November 1978. Christ Church was constructed in 1854-57 and designed in Decorated Gothic style by Albert Purchase & Charles Swyer. It was enlarged in 1874 and 1881 to the designs of Sydney W Smith. It is one of four main buildings constructed on land granted to the Church of England in 1855 and named Church Square. The other buildings are the bishop's residence, vicarage and parish hall. Heritage Victoria describes it as a 'rare and significant square in the history of town planning in Victoria which demonstrates the importance of the church to the community'. It is built from rarely used undressed random coursed sandstone from Point King Sorrento. It is located at 14 Acland Street, St Kilda. The triangular rose window is said to have been modelled on Lichfield Cathedral and shows outstanding craftsmanship. According to Heritage Victoria, the only other known example in Victoria is at St Georges Presbyterian Church in East St Kilda, designed by the same architect, Albert Purchas.colour photograph polaroidSKHS Bus trip 26/11/78 Christ Churchrose window, acland street, purchase, swyer, st kilda, christ church, churches -

Photograph - Entrance to Boroondara General Cemetery
Boroondara Cemetery, established in 1858, is within an unusual triangular reserve bounded by High Street, Park Hill Road and Victoria Park, Kew. The caretaker's lodge and administrative office (1860 designed by Charles Vickers, additions, 1866-1899 by Albert Purchas) form a picturesque two-storey brick structure with a slate roof and clock tower. A rotunda or shelter (1890, Albert Purchas) is located in the centre of the cemetery: this has an octagonal hipped roof with fish scale slates and a decorative brick base with a tessellated floor and timber seating. The cemetery is surrounded by a 2.7 metre high ornamental red brick wall (1895-96, Albert Purchas) with some sections of vertical iron palisades between brick pillars. Albert Purchas was a prominent Melbourne architect who was the Secretary of the Melbourne General Cemetery from 1852 to 1907 and Chairman of the Boroondara Cemetery Board of Trustees from 1867 to 1909. He made a significant contribution to the design of the Boroondara Cemetery. This building is the second of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows rooms the first built in 1862 and opened in that year on the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of the Lodge in Belfast/Port Fairy. In 1872 a 35foot addition was added to the back and in 1873 the grand porch was added. The hall was destroyed by fire in 1875 and the only item saved was the cedar Dispensation frame of the past Grand Masters made by John Gallin that now resides in the Historical Society Rooms. The Trustees bought another building which occupied the land now occupied by the National Australia Bank on the corner of Sackville and Cox Streets but it was not suitable so they decided to re-instate the building whose ruins in the meantime had been used by Cobb and Co. This new building was designed by Charles Neylon an architect and built by Robert Ireland. The completed building was re-opened in December 1888 with four front rooms, a mezzanine floor and a hall measuring 32' by 26' and capable of holding 200. The Trustees of the Loyal Prince Albert Lodge sold the building in 1978 and is now a private home.Coloured photograph of Imposing M.U.i.O.O.F. The availability of reliable regular and frequent public transport was very important to the land speculators of the 1880s. Charles H James, an early land speculator, had large holdings in the Shire of Moorabbin at Black Rock, Sandringham and Mentone. In 1884 he was advertising the auction of 109 blocks of land at ‘Picnic Point’ in the Brighton Southern Cross.[1] He provided free railway passes and conveyance to the grounds to prospective buyers. A proposal to extend the Brighton Railway to Sandringham and Black Rock seemed remote in 1884 so James acted to resolve the lack of public transport by forming his own tramway company. From the discussion between the Council and James it was agreed that the Council would apply for permission to construct a tramway on Beach Road. By February 8, 1889 the horse drawn trams were running from Cheltenham Station to Rickett’s Point and from Sandringham Station to ‘Blackrock Corner’. Although stricken with financial problems for its entire existence, Beaumaris Tramway Company continued until 1915.Black and white image of two horses. harnessed to a double decker tram, being pulled along the tram tracks laid in the street.
