Elizabeth Nelson on eMelbourne has written that: "War Savings Streets were street-based savings groups that participated in the national war savings campaign during World War II. In May 1940 the Australian Government launched its Savings Certificates scheme which encouraged civilians to invest in the national war effort. Organisers of the savings campaign targeted Melbourne's suburbs individually with the aim of enlisting street savings groups. Each street group had a volunteer secretary who regularly sold war savings certificates to, and collected money from, other residents. A Kew Patriotic Carnival was held in Victoria Park in 1941. The event was promoted in the Argus newspaper as: "KEW CARNIVAL - A carnival, at which more than 25 local organisations will co-operate in raising funds for Kew Patriotic Society, will be opened at Victoria Park. Kew this afternoon. The carnival will begin at 2 p.m. to-day and will continue to-morrow. There will be afternoon and evening sessions each day. Arrangements have been made for open-air dances, bicycle races, athletic events, tennis tournaments, folk dancing, miniature golf, and a shooting gallery. Flowers, sweets, cakes, and re-freshments will be sold at stalls conducted by auxiliaries, and lucky envelopes, darts competitions, spinning-wheels, and games will be among the attractions." This specimen is not watermarked indicating it was a re-issue of the earlier version with a watermark. Issued between August 1941 and March 1944. Although the stamp has been called the "Spitfire" for over 70 years, the image of the plane depicted is either a Boulton-Paul Defiant (with a turret mounted behind the cockpit) or a Hurricane rather than a Spitfire. Australia, like many countries involved in both the First and Second World Wars realised that they would need more funds to resource their campaigns, so war loan programs were developed. These programs encouraged the population to purchase government war bonds which would be repaid with interest at a later time while immediately assisting the war effort. Post WW2 the government continued to encourage citizens to save money in an attempt to curb inflation. Security loans formed part of this countries economic program from the 1940's onwards. Districts were allocated a quota for which they encouraged citizens to subscribe and pennants were awarded for the highest per capita payment amongst the town population. In 1946 Bendigo was the first country city in Australia to record a quota success for the Second Security Loan, raising £260,480 from 1953 subscribers. This belt was manufactured for military service. It is presumably a World War Two era article of Army uniform.This Army belt was presumably made and used during the World War Two era and therefore has historic value. Brown leather belt with a brass buckle. The belt has twelve holes in two rows at one end for fastening into the buckle. The very tip narrows to a point. There is light brown stitching along the edges of the belt. There are two brass studs which hold the leather in a loop of the other end. There is an additional piece of leather fixed to this looped edge for holding the other end in place. The buckle is made of a silver coloured brass and has two rods which pass through two of the twelve holes for fastening. Catholic Chaplains Communion kit carried by Rev JJ Tresidder. Rev Tresidder served during the second world war as an Army Chaplian.Catholic Chaplians Communition kit, carried by WW2 chaplain VX117292 John Joseph Tressider. This is an example of the style of equipment, soldiers would have been offered communion from.Communion kit, consisting of 10 items. 1. A white linen Corporal with small red cross embroidered in its centre. This item was used during Mass/ communion/ Lords Supper to collect any host if it were to be dropped, especially after concecration. 2. Pyx. This is a flat circular dish with a hinged lid. On the side of the container is a small silver ball with a hole drilled through it to allow a string to be placed through and the Pyx to be worn around the priests neck. The Pyx is made of silver, and has a cross engraved on the lid. on the reverse " Rev. J.J.Tressider Catholic Chaplain" is enscribed. This item holds individual hosts ( bread) Following Concecration hosts are to be consumed or worn by the Priest and later to be distrubted as reserved sacrement. 3.Paten, a small silver dish, slightly bowing in the centre. There are no engraving on this item except for the makers stamps on the reverse. "T.G. Aunt & Co." " STG. Silver" Use for holding the Priests Host (Bread) representing the body of Christ, broken for all. 4. Chalice. Silver cup with flaired base.The inseide of the cup has a gold coloured appearence. On the base is a small raised silver cruisifix affixed by a screw. The Chalice was used asa a cup for holding water and wine, drunk from by all as a common cup, beginning and ending with the Priest. 5&6. Two silver Cruets. Each crust is a small silver jug with sloping sides with a small pinched lip for pouring. There are no handles and each cruet has the words " Catholic Chaplain" enscribed on its side. One of the cruets is used for adding a small amount of water to the chalice, representing Christs humanity, the outher is used to add a small amount of wine, representing the blood of Christ and divinity. 7. Lavabo Bowl. a small silver bowl with raised sides. The bowl has " Catholic Chaplain" inscribed in the base of the disg. The Lavabo bowl is used to wash the Priests hands prior to celebrating the Mass. 8. Ewer. A small silver water jug with a curled handle. The Ewer has 3 bands engraved arounf its middle and inside has a goldish tint. On its base is stamped "Albion Pla" "EPNS A" The Ewer is used to wash the priests hands prior to Mass. 9. Oil for the infirm- A small sliver canister that can be screwed to two similat canasters. The base has an internal screw thread to allow this to happen. The lid can be screwed on/ off and has an ornate cross enscribed on its top. The side of the canaster has a letter "I" incribed on it filling most of the canasters side. The canaster is believed to still contain the oil. The oil of the infirm is used outside of the mass in a service to administer the sacrement of the anointing of the sick. 10, Leather Oil Carry case, small, chocolate brown tubular carrying case with two snaps for closure on the side. the case has cardboard stiffening and a small amount of cottonwool to soak up any spilt oil. Murray Comrie Collection. The Memorial was first unveiled at a Thanksgiving Service in 1918. It now commemorates Tarnagulla residents who served in WWI and WWII. This stone monument was created and erected by Mr. Barber of Dunolly in October 1919. It was unveiled by Brigadier General Brand C.B. C.M.G. D.S.O. at 2:30pm on Saturday November 8th, 1919. The Welcome Home Committee, formed 2nd July 1917, was largely responsible for commissioning the monument. Foundation members were Mrs. B. Patterson, Mrs J. Bock and the Misses P. Lemin, Violet Radnell, D. Dyer and Doris and Phoebe Bock. The Committee also arranged 'Welcome Home' functions for each local soldier returning home after service in the First World War. A portrait of Legatee Arthur Henson Smith who was a legatee that had rejoined to serve in the second World War. His ribbon bar indicates he had served in the first World War. His Vale notice that appeared in the Bulletin on 22 January 1973 says he had landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He went on to serve with the 2nd Brigade AFA and the 3rd Army Brigade Artillery. On 1 May 1940 he enlisted with the 2/9 Field Regiment of the 2nd AIF with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and served in Syria and the Middle East. Arthur Smith was inducted into Legacy in 1935 and served on many committees, until he reluctantly was put on reserve list in 1965 due to illness. He died in 1973. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). From NAA.gov.au Edward Thomas Tronson Scott joined on 6 March 1918 to serve in World War One, he was enroute on a troop ship when Armistice occurred and then ship returned to Australia. He caught influenza and was hospitalised for several months before being discharged. His records from the DVA show he enlisted 13 July 1940 and attained the rank of Major (service number VX46714), his posting at discharge was AASC Vic L of C Area. The portrait was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). On 12 August 1940, SS Orduna sailed from Liverpool with a privately organised party of 16 children from Belmont Preparatory school, Hassocks Sussex to Nassau. It was part of a wider British Government children's evacuation program during World War II, when the prospect of imminent invasion threatened Britain. In 1941 with the need for military transport in the Second World War, she was put into service by the British government as a troopship. Another task during the Second World War was that of an evacuation transport. In 1945 the Orduna brought back Prisoners of War and internees from the Far East. A memorial to the ships involved in the repatriation was unveiled on the Liverpool waterfront on 15 October 2011.
