In the early 1900s black marble was being mined in the Bruthen district. Some was used for the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne and Australia House in London. 900 tonnes were shipped to London to be included in the construction of Australia House. This photograph shows the last 120 ton slab to be used to complete the sixteen dark Buchan marble Ionic columns in the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. The Shrine of Remembrance was created to meet the needs of a grieving community after the extensive loss of lives in the First World War (1914 –18). Marble quarrying has been a significant part of the history of Buchan in East Gippsland. The Society conducted a heritage excursion "Eltham War Memorials Walk" on Saturday, May 7, 2016 in conjunction with the centenary commemorations of the First World War. Menin Gate at Midnight (also known as Ghosts of Menin Gate) is a 1927 painting by Australian artist Will Longstaff. The painting depicts a host of ghostly soldiers marching across a field in front of the Menin Gate war memorial. Longstaff painted the work after attending the unveiling of the Menin Gate memorial, at Ypres in Belgium, on 24 July 1927. The memorial commemorated those men of the British Empire, including Australia, who died in the battles of the First World War around the town. The painting is part of the collection of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. It was purchased by Lord Woolavington for 2,000 Guineas and presented to the Australian government.[1] After a royal command viewing for George V and the Royal family at Buckingham Palace, the painting was displayed in Manchester and Glasgow. It was then taken around Australia, where record crowds paid to view the work. RMS ORSOVA (1909-1936) R.M.S.ORSOVA made the first of what would be seventy voyages to Australia in 1909. During the First World War she was used as a troopship, carrying Australian soldiers to various theatres of war. She survived being torpedoed in the English Channel in 1917, and resumed commercial service to Australia for the Orient Line in 1919. In 1933, ORSOVA was converted to a tourist class ship and finally served briefly as a cruise ship before being scrapped in 1936. The village of Westoutre (now Westouter) remained in Allied hands from the early months of the First World War to the Armistice, but in the summer of 1918, after the Battles of the Lys, it was within 2.4 Kms of the front line. Popular souvenirs during World War Two that were easy to fold and post home to Australia. Like the First World War Egyptian embroideries, they used cotton sateen in a range of bright colours (although sometimes velveteen was used instead) and bear the words 'Souvenir of Palestine', a year date, and sometimes a personal message, as well as images of specific mosques or landmarks, camels, goats and date palms. Items such as this cushion covers were purchased by Australian men and women serving during the First World War as souvenirs of their travels and gifts for their loved ones at home. BHS records indicate that this cushion cover belonged to Mary Crombie, an early Victorian dentist who lived in Brighton while she was studying at the Australian College of Dentistry in the mid-1900s, and later returned to the area in her retirement from 1949-1971. It is likely it was given to her as a gift by a friend of family member who served in Egypt.Pale pink satin cushion cover with pale blue fringe. Returned Soldiers’ Cup Donor: Deed of Gift: No There is an earlier returned soldiers trophy which is a World War I shell case which was awarded to commemorate the RBYC members who served in the first World War. The first trophy was awarded to the Jubilee yacht Rotanes BJ3, owned by A. E. Akhurst in 1935. A photo of the Tyne Cot Cemetery in Passchendale dated September 24, 1930. It appears to be a professional photograph purchased as a souvenir. The Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery and Memorial to the Missing is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground for the dead of the First World War in the Ypres Salient on the Western Front (source Wikipedia). The hand written inscription on the back of the photo says: "This memorial in Cemetery was built over a German dugout. 12,000 men are buried here. Stone wall at back has soldiers names engraved on same. Those unknown - words in stone 'Australian Soldier of the Great War Known unto God.' This bridge was built in the 1920s as a road and rail bridge, and was partly washed away by flood waters in 1934. After the end of the first World War the Victorian Railways considered an extension of the railhead across the river at Orbost, and in 1922 a new timber and steel girder structure, a joint Country Roads Board — Victorian Railways venture, was built and completed at a cost of £41,000 (the steel girders came from the Flinders Street viaduct reconstruction). Subsequently it was decided not to take the railway across the river, and the bridge has only been used by road traffic. Matthew Hohner began manufacturing mouth organs in 1857 in Germany and became quite popular over the ensuing years with production reaching over 1 million units in the 1880’s. Control of the business passed to his sons around 1900. By 1920 the company was producing 20 million harmonicas a year. They sold to both sides of the conflict during the first world war. Other musical instruments were made by the company in the 20th century. Ernst Hohner retired from the firm in 1965 after 45 years at the healm. Harmonicas and mouth organs were mass produced in the later part of the 19th and into the 20th century and as such are items with which many people can identify. It has social and cultural significance. The harmonica has chrome top and bottom with wooden section in middle. Box is bright pink with label depicting a musical band in tones of orange and black.Harmonica has Jazz band and Made in Germany engraved on the top. The obelisk was originally dedicate to those that fell in the First World War and was dedicated in 1919. It was located on the corner of Bridge Street and Main Road. With road works undertaken in the 1950s, the obelisk was relocated to the front Garden of Remembrance at the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch diagonally across Main Road from its original location. Ballarat Teachers' College Principal W.H. Ellwood (1926-31) formed a friendship with Mr C. Ellis when they were teachers at neighbouring Gippsland schools. During the first world war they served in the same regiment. When Mr Ellwood became Principal of the Ballarat Teachers' College in 1926 the original copy of the college anthem, "Extra Muros", bore the words written and composed by Helen Ellis. The monument commemorates those from Avoca who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. It was dedicated on18 November 1921. The memorial was later rededicated in 1988 to also remember those who served in the Second World War. During the First World War, 137 men from the Avoca area volunteered for the armed services and of this number 29 were killed. The Female Relative's Badge was issued to the wife and/or mother, or to the nearest female relative of soldiers, nurses and masseurs who had left Australia for active service abroad during the First World War. The service number of the relative is inscribed on the back of the badge. A bar(s) suspended below the badge was issued for each additional relative, son or daughter serving. (taken from awm.gov.au). The provenance of this badge is unknown. A search on the defence force numbers has been unsuccessful to ascertain the owner of the badge. More research would be required.Shows the importance placed on having relatives serving in the Defence Forces.Silver badge with blue enamel and safety chain. A.I.F. in cutout script in the centre of an oval. Oval has blue enamel with silver text "Issued by the Dept of Defence to Women of Australia". An enamelled scroll beneath this contains the word "For Duty Done". The badge is surmounted by a King's Crown. A brooch fastening and a safety chain are attached to the back, the original safety pin is missing. Two bars are suspended from the bottom of the badge indicating a total of 3 relatives serving overseas. Defence force numbers 33370, 20232 and 20233 inscribed on back. The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) was first formed on 24 August 1916 from a number of State based organisations that had been individually formed at the beginning of the First World War to send comforts to the troops. With the close of the war, the ACF officially ceased to exist on 16 April 1920, only to be revived in 1939 with the outbreak of the Second World War. The ACF provided embarkation kits to troops containing items such as soap, clothes, tobacco, razors and barley sugar. The ACF officially closed on June 27, 1946. A group of children in Geelong who's fathers had served during the first World War. The RSSILA (precursor to the RSL) had held an event for them and took this photo which was then distributed to the families at Christmas 1919. Margaret Burn is possibly one in the front row and her family donated the photo. Margaret later attended girls classes with Geelong Legacy in the 1930s and Legacy helped her find employment when she left school. Maker unknown. This blanket was part of the standard army issue kit and belonged to Lois Denshams father, who served at Gallipoli during the first world war. Before donating the blanket to the Running stitch collection, it was kept by Lois' Aunty Nita. Lois remembers that it was kept in her fathers original kit bag and kept at her aunts place because of sad memories about the war which her mother found difficult. The humble army blanket had many uses during war times. Issued with two blankets, it was all a soldier had as a bed to keep warm or without a tent, all they had to provide shelter from the sun, rain or wind. (They were supplemented with a woollen army 'great coat', but soldiers still had to huddle together as keeping warm and dry was a desperate game.) The Lighthorsemen used them under their standard leather saddles for extra padding and in the hospitals they were sometimes the only bedding for the wounded. This blanket belonged to Lois Denshams' father who served in the Australian Army in the First World War, landing at Gallipoli. Since the war, army blankets have come to be regarded as the basic type of blanket -no frills. The dead man's penny is a commemorative medallion which was presented to the family of soldier s who were killed in the First World War. The images of Brittania the dolphins and the lion represent Brittain and the eagle represents Germany. The name of the soldier is presented without rank to signify the equality of all sacrifice. This medallion was to commemorate Daniel Nicol Peters who came from Scotland but enlisted in the AIF in Blackboy Hill Western Australia. His regimental number was 3200. he was Killed in Action on 26 August 1918. His father was John Peters of Greenside Fifeshire Scotland. From a country with a population of approximately 5 million people, there were more than 60000 soldiers killed. This object represents but one of these soldiers. It therefore has historical and social significanceCircluar brass plaque with figure of Brittania and a lion in low relief. First world war experiences written and published in booklet form entitled "My Brother" by Leo Blanchard HANLY - Private 1702 served the 3 Light Horse Field Ambulance. Embarked on 15.7.1915 and returned on 2.1.1919. Leo wrote the book about his brother Theodore Hanly. Theodore and another brother, Joseph Dillon also served in the 3 LH Field Ambulance alongside Leo. The Easter Rising also known as the Easter Rebellion, was an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter Week in April 1916.
