Document - R. J HOWARD CORRESPONDENCE R J HOWARD (CORRESPONDENCE RE), 19/11/1970
R J Howard (correspondence re a R J Howard to Bendigo BHS (19/11/1970) from D Jowett, Mordialloc . This R J Howard arrived in Australia (shipwrecked! At Warrnambool) on 8/11/1853 according to letter. Response from BHS (2/71) gives details of an R J Howard who in ''latter part of 1853'' set up a line of coaches to run between Bendigo and Melbourne. No indication from this whether this may be the ship-wrecked Howard (unlikely to have business established so quickly?? TD). William Murray Ross, born Liverpool England in 1825. Ross sailed in 13/7/1852 on the barque 'Archer' for Melbourne, and arrived on 13/11/1852. It is alleged that R. J. Howard became an M.P. At Bendigo and manager of the Government Savings Bank. Howard was part owner of the 'Archer' with a Mr.Minnet. The 'Archer' ran aground at Warrnambool in 8/11/1853 and was dismantled. Parliamentary papers at Latrobe library show that in 1859-61 and 1864 an R. F. Howard was M.L.A. Shield, 1948
Team Road Races were a popular feature of club cycling in the Western District of Victoria during the second half of the 20th century. The shield was initiated by the Camperdown cycling club to record team winners of the races held between the clubs in the Western District of Victoria. This shield has an important place in the history of cycling in the Western District of Victoria. A large wooden shield with silver coloured plated plaques containing inscriptions of team winners of road races in the Western District of Victoria. There is a smaller shield in the centre of the shield depicting a cyclist and above and below this are banner like plaques with inscriptions on them. Many of the inscriptions have worn with age. The booklet's full title is 'Motorists and Tourists who assist to build The Great Ocean Road (Barwon Heads to Warrnambool) will have helped to found a worthy Memorial to all Victorian Soldiers and a National Asset for Victoria.' Date of the copy is unknown. The booklet is an appeal for donations toward the construction of the Great Ocean Road which, upon completion, would then be a Memorial to soldiers and, during construction, provide employment for returned soldiers.
