Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, 2004
... Corner of Williams St and Ford St, Beechworth, Victoria ...This photo was taken in 2004 and pictures Luke Bailey and Glen Scholfield, the Wooragee Landcare Group coordinator, outside Beechworth Prison. This was the last year Wooragee Landcare Group met with Beechworth Prison Farm and Industry Managers at the prison itself, where they discussed weed and rabbit control on the prison's 'Rockery' block. The weed and rabbit controls that were explored in this event aimed to educate people on how to manage common pests in the Wooragee landscape and improve the appearance of the Beechworth Prison. The Beechworth prison itself is significant as it was built between 1859 and 1864 and is designed using a radiating 'panopticon' method which had proved an efficient, cost-effective design for easy surveillance of prisoners by allowing guards to watch over a large area from a central observation point. The prison is historically significant for its association with the early development of Beechworth as the government administrative centre of north-eastern Victoria. It is part of a major precinct of public buildings and has links to numerous other places in Beechworth which used granite quarried and broken at the prison by male inmates. It is also significant for its associations with the bushranger Ned Kelly and the Kelly storyThe photo holds significance due to the social and educational context the image holds in representing the events Wooragee Landcare Group held in order to educate the public. The photograph also exemplifies the historic significance of the area due to the Beechworth Prison's relation to important historical eras and events.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paperReverse: WAN NA E0NA0N2. Sculpture - Door panel sculpted by Hans Knorr (1915-1988) in 1968, 'Education and Achievement'
... 'Education and Achievement' ...“The theme of the panel is education. From man’s primeval roots, and from beginnings symbolised by the two ovoid shapes, which are both basic and universal, man is raised by his natural yearning and by education towards things of the spirit; so that in the second level of the panel we see a church building and a book, a dam and the ploughed field, such diverse inventions as the crucible and the wheel, the aeroplane and the radar screen, and symbols of commerce and culture. The continuing central pillar, or tree, symbolises the life of Christ which binds together and culminates, not only in the Cross but in the full Unity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” Large sculpture by artist Hans Knorr (1915-1988) symbolising humanity's growth and progress through effort, experience and education. The door panel was commissioned by the Sisters of Mercy in 1967 on the opening St Martin's in the Pines (Sacred Heart College, Senior School).Door panel sculpted in aluminium hans knorr, sculpture, catholic education, education -

Towel Tea CWA
The Tawonga branch of the C.W.A. commenced on the 7th Feb. 1946 and often combined activities with the other branches in the Kiewa Valley. The C.W.A. aimed to improve health, welfare and education for women and children in the country.Women living in Tawonga were mostly on farms and, in 1946, when the branch commenced would have been feeling more remote with WW11 having had an effect of available workers and the well being of the women and children. This tea towel would have been used at a later date possibly for fund raising as the group continued to meet and work together. This large blue green, yellow, brown and black with a white border, linen, tea towel has the CWA logo in the middle with pictures of handcrafted items surrounding it. Photograph - Black and white, Percy Fairlam, Mechanics Institute and Temperance Hall, Cheltenham, c.1910
... Mechanics Institute and Temperance Hall, Cheltenham ...The Institute movement came to Melbourne in 1839 with the establishment of the Melbourne Mechanics’ Institute later known as the Melbourne Athenaeum. Adopting the principles of self help, social improvement and the recognition of the importance of useful knowledge, it maintained a library, a reading room and an art gallery, while also establishing classes and lectures in a variety of fields. Various dates have been suggested for the founding of the Cheltenham Mechanics’ Institute with the range being somewhere between 1853 and 1856. The first Institute building erected on the tip of the land where Charman Road joined Point Nepean Road was of weatherboard construction. It consisted of a small hall, a reading room and a library. Later it was realized that the building was inadequate for community functions that attracted a large number of participants; consequently additions and modifications were needed. The Shire Council in 1888 voted £10 to the building fund but stipulated that the money would only be paid when the new building was commenced. Major contributors to the fund were the temperance societies who were regular users of the Institute’s facilities. As a result of their contributions the building was named Mechanics’ Institute Free Library and Temperance Hall with this title being proudly painted on its façade in ‘gold letters shaded with blue’.Black and white image of a group of six men dressed in suits and wearing hats, standing at the front entrance of the Mechanics Institute, Free Library and Temperance Hall, Cheltenham -

Card - Rats of Tobruk Association Christmas Card, after 1946
Arthur Lock was a Rat of Tobruk and served as President of the Albury Rats of Tobruk Association. 14,000 Australians were in Tobruk during the siege. On return to Australia the veterans looked to maintain the ties created amongst those who were in Tobruk during the siege and to ensure their needs were supported. In 1944, the Rats of Tobruk Association, NSW was established. This was followed by the establishment of the Victorian Branch on 2nd October 1945. Other branches and sub-branches were established across Australia and a Federal Council was established in 1946. With the passing of the survivors of Tobruk, most branches have been wound up with the exception of the Victorian branch. Since 2012 the Rats of Tobruk Association Inc. has opened up affiliate membership to descendants and relatives of the original "Rats" in order to preserve their legacy. This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region.A Christmas card produced by the Rats of Tobruk Association.
