This photograph is one of approximately 43 original photographs and photocopies of buildings, patients and staff assembled in a red covered, spirally bound photograph album (the album itself is now discarded and the images stored separately). The images in the album cover the period from the 1870s to 1965. A few photographs have inscriptions on the reverse; others had later separate labels in the album. The album was presumably compiled as a public record. It and other items came from the collection assembled by Dr Fred Stamp, the last medical superintendent of Willsmere Hospital before its closure in 1988. Original photographs have been uploaded to and described on Victorian Collections. The two land auction plans shown in this record relate to the sale of land from the Glenmore Estate property. The Glenmore property was established by C.J. (Charles James) Griffith and James Moore around 1840. Moore sold his interest to Moelesworth Greene in 1848. Greene was the nephew of the other owner Charles Griffith who died in 1863. From around the 1870s onwards parts of the Estate were subdivided and put up for sale or lease. In subsequent decades more changes in ownership occurred. These two plans document another major sale of the land from the original Glenmore Estate including part of the estate which had become used for dairy farming and was at that time known as the Glenvale Estate. Two single page maps pasted together on a single page of a bound volume of maps. One map shows 15 separate lots of land for sale. The other map which has the words 'Glenvale Estate' at the top of the map shows 4 lots of land for sale. Both parcels of land were originally part of the Glenmore Estate a pastoral holding belonging to C.J. Griffith and James Moore which the began in the Rowsley area south west of Bacchus Marsh in the 1840s. The maps are pasted into a bound volume containing 76 maps or plans in total. From the late 1870s to the 1930s, illuminated addresses were a popular way to commemorate special occasions and were given to recognize outstanding service. They featured beautiful calligraphy and ornate designs. Arthur Grace was a draper who ran a business in Linton (at 'Criterion House') from the mid-1860s until he left Linton to return to England in 1873. He later returned to live in Ballarat, where he died in 1905. He was heavily involved with the Methodist/Wesleyan congregation at Linton, and instrumental in establishing the Linton Mechanics' Institute and Free Library. The Address was made by Francis Wilson Niven, a lithographer, printer and bookbinder from Ballarat. (See 'Ballarat Star', 10 March 1873.)Framed document, an 'illuminated address' which was presented to Arthur Grace when he moved back to England from Linton in 1873. The Address was presented in acknowledgement of the "important services rendered by you in promoting the material and social prosperity of a district wherein you have so long resided, but more particularly for you liberality and cordial co-operation in establishing a Public Library at Linton". The journey towards compulsory attendance in Victorian education was a gradual process, influenced by various factors such as economic conditions, social attitudes, and the need for efficient instruction. The first attempts to encourage attendance were made in the 1860s with the Revised Code of 1862, which linked payments to attendance and academic performance. However, it was not until the 1870s and 1880s that measures were taken to make attendance compulsory. The 1876 Sandon’s Acts were a significant step, compelling parents to ensure their children received efficient instruction and imposing penalties for non-compliance. The 1870 Education Act allowed School Boards to frame bye-laws for compulsory attendance between the ages of 5 and 13, but it was not until the 1880s that full compulsory attendance was established.Single sided document.
