Yields information about the view of the City of Ballaarat in 1968 about the possible replacement of tram service.Report or Submission - 6 Gestener printed foolscap sheets, stapled on left hand side and bound with a blue edging tape titled "Submission to Enquiry into Public Transport Facilities in the Ballarat Urban District by A. W. Nicholson, Mayor of Ballaarat Council". Dated 2 April 1968. Submission looks at the possible closure or the future of the tramway system, the SEC involvement, employment, road surface repairs, financial loss to the SEC, reduction in passengers due to car ownership. Council submitted that the tramway system should be retained and extended and that pensioner concessions should be continued. Notes that at the time 69 men on the trams, 18 at the depot and 8 on the track. If replaced by buses, supported a government owned bus provider rather than private. Around 1908 the town band split and the Orbost Workers' Band was formed. Eventually the two bands merged in 1913 to reform as the Orbost Municipal Band under conductorship of Charles Spink. The band continued for many years but was later disbanded and again reformed. This was to happen a number of times, the last time being in 1961 and continuing through to the late 1970's. Provides information about the two-day enquiry held by the Victorian Transport Regulation board into the SEC operated Ballarat Tramway system. Enquiry held at the Ballarat Court House, by Messrs J Bolster, E V Field (Chairman) and J O Mactier of the TRB. Two photos show the Board and some of the attendees. Page 2 of the 3 April report; the acting assistant manager of the SEC advised that the tramway was unsafe, deaths due to collisions with trams, costs of refurbishing the tracks and tramcars and employment issues. Evidence was also given by the Mayor of Ballarat, Cr. Nicholson, Ballarat Town Clerk Mr Maddern, Barry Wilkins, H A Davis local bus operators. The Board considered whether the existing services could be replaced by private operators, or a publicly operated service, including the cost of operators. Also submissions from Mr O'Shea of the ATOMEA, Ballarat Trams and Labor Council, and Chamber of Manufacturers. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. Newspaper Clipping - from The Argus 28 October 1940, titled "Last of Cable Trams / Quiet passing after secret send-off", about the closure of the Bourke St cable tram routes the previous Saturday nights when the trams were withdrawn prior to the schedule time and replaced by buses. Gives details of the last tram, crews etc. Notes the driver of the last Nicholson St tram as J. Peden, conductor A. C. Craven, Mr. M. McSweeney as the bus depot dispatcher, Mr. E. Lang as the first driver and conductor, Mr. J. Lee. Also quotes Mr Bell that the tram tracks would be kept in running order if needed, but new cables would be needed. A check with Trove shows the Argus as the source of the newspaper. On the rear of the cutting (3rd last item) is a note that Mr. J. K. Compact Diskette in a paper envelope with a video made from film taken by Neville Govett with voice over by Robert Green. With the CD are a photocopy of notes provided by Neville at the time of production on the sources, how made, when and that a copy had gone to the TMSV c1980. Has explanations on how the cable system worked, shunting of tramcars, views of the cars operating in Bourke and other streets, the Gertrude and Nicholson St powerhouse and other features. The last sheet (i6) - copy of an article written by Lorna Hanna, niece to Neville, wrote for the March 2013 issue of the North and West Melbourne News, with particular notes on the North Melbourne route and its operation. CD is a copy of an original held by Robert, provided by Robert on 26/7/2014 in time for the Melbourne Open House Day. The National Archives of Australia holds the original trademark application - a digitised version is available online (see References). The exact composition of the original paste is unknown but is thought to have been starch-based. Australian schools commonly request that parents purchase Clag paste for their children as part of the stationery lists that are circulated before each school year. The main reason for this is Clag's reputation for safety and ease of use. The bottle includes a brush recessed into the lid that children find relatively easy to handle, and the packaging does not contain any small components that children might swallow. The main ingredient of Clag is wheat starch dissolved in a water base, meaning that children can safely swallow the glue without incident It feels cold to touch and when applied to paper, it sometimes alters the colour of what is on it and causes paper to warp, owing to the high water content of the glue. There is an Australian slang usage of the word "clagged" derived from the characteristic of Clag Paste and can be used in place of the words, "clogged", "congested", "restricted" or "stuck".
