During the 17th century, or the Golden Age, the Dutch Republic was involved in a number of wars at sea. The main goal of the Dutch navy was to protect shipping lanes all over the world and, if need be, to repel a naval invasion of Dutch territory. They also constantly searched for new territories from which to import the spices vital for the preservation of food. The Dutch are historically very proud of their seafaring history and honour "heroes" such as Dik Tromp, Piet Hein and Michel de Ruyter. These men were actually as much pirates as anything else and preyed on the treasures brought back from South America by the Spanish and Portuguese.This is actually a miniature sailing ship based on a small wooden clog. This bookmark may have belonged to, and was possibly made by, Miss Mary Leviny, the eldest of the Leviny sisters, who was a founding member of the Castlemaine Red Cross. Dustoff was donated to the Dandenong RSL by the United States in September 2003. Dustoff is a Iroquois UH - 11v ( a modified UH - 1D ) she was fully restored when donated. They were a highly manoeuvrable aircraft.Very important. Huey saved lives. Dustoff is a local attraction bringing many people to view it. Ex U.S Military helicopter. Dustoff or CASEVAC - fitted out to evacuate wounded soldiers during the Vietnam War. These helicopters were commonly called "Hueys".Large Red Cross on front. For welcome and presentations to St Kilda's (1914) ANZACs on 4 December 1918. The event is described by John Butler Cooper in 'The History of St Kilda' (pp 263-264) as follows: 'On Wednesday evening, December 4, 1918, seventy Anzacs of St. Kilda who had returned were welcomed by the St. Kilda Patriotic Committee at the City Hall. The hall was decorated with an immense bouquet of red, white and blue flowers, depending from the centre of the ceiling, with floral and electric festoons leading therefrom. Anzacs shields in laurel wreaths and flags were displayed along the balcony of the hall. Over the stage the word "Anzacs," outlined by electric lights, was surmounted with the words "Patriotic Committee of St. Kilda heartily Welcomes You." As the returned soldiers marched into the hall, they were received with cheers, and an electric button being touched, the word "Welcome" flashed in light caught their eyes. The Mayor presented the 1914 soldiers with gold enamelled medals, bearing the arms of St. Kilda.' The Sailors and Soldiers Fathers' Association was established in the First World War and appears to have had branches in most states. The group was active (and often outspoken), involving themselves with hospital visits, repatriation issues, employment of returned servicemen and the establishment of returned servicemen’s rights relating to principles such as pensions and housing. There appears to be a close co-operation between this group and the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia in forming a group with strong lobbying abilities. Similarly, they were active in raising funds to build Memorials after the war. The Association remained active after the First World War in pursuing returned soldiers’ rights. They appear under a slightly different name during the Second World War (Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen’s Fathers' Association) but their goals were identical........The Sailors and Soldiers Fathers' Association, established during the First World War, was active in fundraising, establishing memorials and advocacy for issues such as the repatriation and employment of returned servicemen.
