A brochure explaining 'A brief account of its ideals and work' in 1928. The notation H4 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. The brochure lays out the history of the young organisation, it has 146 members in 1927, and clubs had started in state capital and Geelong, Ballarat, and Bendigo. Members were all men who had served in the forces of the British Empire during the war. It shows the work of Legacy as : Junior Legacy Club - for sons (aged 9 to 21) of deceased soldiers. Members of the Legacy Club were in constant touch and acted as Big Brothers. Boys' Literary and Debating Branch - approximately 80 boys attended weekly meetings of a debating society at Anzac House. Boys' Physical Training Branch - for the boys physical welfare classes and conducted weekly by a permanent instructor (paid by Legacy). There were 161 boys attending. Also cricket, football, Lacrosse and swimming clubs, all supervised and coached. A holiday camp is held each Christmas at the seaside- 67 attended the previous year at Balnarring (led by Stan Savige). Girls' Physical Training Branch - started in 1927 and now over 120 girls were being instructed by Mrs AM Gilles (the wife of a Legatee). Lending Library of over 400 books. Vocational placements for junior legatees. Meetings were held in the Victoria Coffee Palace at 1pm on Tuesdays and included a half hour lecture. The policy and objectives were laid out including to preserve the memory of fallen comrades and to assist their dependents, particularly the children. Also to maintain a spirit of comradeship, and to safeguard the good standing and interests of ex-service men in the community and to assist the the to secure suitable employment. The brochure shows activities as: Employment Committee, Comradeship Committee, a pledge to assist the National War Memorial being established on the Domain site, and for the children the 'Deceased Soldiers' Children's Welfare Committee. A schedule of Boys' and Girls' Classes is included to show the options for the children. Also picnics, Christmas camp, cycle club, and rambles as arranged. Launch of Legacy Week in 1990 included an exhibition of Aviation Art at Legacy House. Paintings were by Frank Harding of Renmark, South Australia. A newspaper article published on 23 August 1990, mentions that Frank Harding had painted over 50 paintings of aircraft flown by Australians and published a book of the images. It was called 'They flew for the King'. Each painting had been extensively researched to capture a specific moment in the World War 2 combat career of various pilots, flight officers or bomb-aimers. His aim was to honour the fine efforts of these great individuals. Guests included Bud Tingwell, who flew for the RAAF in World War 2 and other RAAF personnel. It appears to have included a heritage display from the Royal Australian Air Force Museum at the same time. Unfortunately the artist died a few weeks after the exhibition and launch of his book. In 1990 the slogan was "Lest YOU forget" with an image of the statue of Simpson and his donkey rather than a personality. Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. A regular event for the widows was a concert in Fitzroy gardens performed by the Police Band. Usually held in March each year. The police horse Gendarme was a regular favourite. A press release from Melbourne Legacy in 1975 which relates the story of Brian O'Donohue who was to be president of Colac Legacy. The information was intended to be used by press and magazines etc. Colac was the first club to select a president that had done his war service in Vietnam. Brian started his National Service aged 20, at Puckapunyal and trained as an artillery signaller. He was posted to join the 104 Field Battery of 12 Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery in Vietnam. For 9 months he was a member of a forward observation party which had the responsibility of calling artillery fire to support the operations of the infantry battalion with which it was working. Returning to Australia after a year. 'What he had seen and done in Vietnam, the tough times he had endured and the lighter times he had enjoyed with his mates, had made him conscious of the debt he owed to the families of those who not returned. A promotional event where Ron Barassi and Daryl Somers did a parachute jump to promote Legacy. Photos show Daryl and Ron in Fawkner Park in Melbourne and some Legatees giving scores on cards of their jump - similar to the scores given on 'Red Faces' a segment of Daryl Somers TV show 'Hey Hey it's Saturday'. The Legatees with President Brian Luscombe, George Logan and Peter Stokes. A photo of Barbara Leach, volunteering with a badge tray, and a bag piper in the centre of St Kilda Road. The slogan says "Please buy a badge". It appears to have been professionally taken to publicise Legacy Week in the newspapers. The photo appeared on the front page of the Herald Sun on 6 September 1991. The accompanying articles says that police piper Constable Ross Bates played outside Legacy House to pipe in Legacy Day, which saw hundreds of collectors spread across Melbourne for the badge appeal. The appeal was aiming to reach $500000 to beat the previous year's total of $467,702. The reference number 910906/9 could mean the date was the 6th September 1991. A church service for Legacy widows at Scot's Church in Collins St, Melbourne. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The church used for the service varies, The Scots' Church was the first Presbyterian Church to be built in Victoria. The photos shows the interior of the church with the congregation listening to service. Same roll of film as the photos with President David Ford in 2003 so the event is assumed to be in that year. Melbourne's new orange-coloured super trams have been designed for an era of one-man operators and women drivers. Cheaper to run. Passengers should find them more comfortable and faster. Will go into service early next month (April?). MMTB Chairman, RF Kirby said board would like to recruit women drivers for trams, especially new super trams. "...very keen to have women tram drivers. But union has objected." Kirby said board had no immediate plans for introduction of one-man operators but trams could be easily adapted. One-man operations could be used in off-peak periods. State Government recently approved calling of tenders for 100 new trams to replace Melbourne's oldest trams. 300 trams are 50 years old. New tram is 53 feet long and 8 feet 9 inches wide. A very similar image was taken by Dale Budd at the same time and used on the front cover of Bellcord, September 2019 issue who advised in an email of 9/9/2019 that "Re the photo of 219, it is likely Keith was standing alongside me. The picture was taken during the 1964 AETA convention and I think many of the attendees were together when that photo was taken." Autumn 1995 issue of Gateway with a trammie (Roberto D'Andrea) leaning from 870 on the front cover. Contains an article "The Lucky City", written by Michael Davie about Melbourne and its city, in particular its trams. Has a photo of a City Circle tram (866) on page 22. Gateway published the Federal Airports Corporation as an inbound magazine for overseas travellers. In an email from Roberto 2/10/2014 - "G'day Warren, Yes indeed the Gateway Magazine with a younger Roberto at South Depot. Brings to mind that South Depot did the bulk of the tramways media through the 90s until closure. On the list of programs I have in the archive is Totally Wild (Channel 10), Monty the Weatherman did 4 crosses live (Channel 9), 7.30 Reports (ABC), we hosted 4 Corners around the network and a few other programs on Channel 7. Plenty of newspapers and radio. Handy with a close to city location the PTC sent the media to South for tram stories. I have the 6 Trammie banners from the Trammies Exhibition at the Immigration Museum where we worked together back in 2003. I've used them occasionally and may need them for a tram presentation in March next year....would they be handy as a part of a exhibit at Hawthorn? The Connies are still going strong....festivals and events, sometimes in schools and we've co-funded 2 tram festivals in Kolkata with the Calcutta Tramways in 2012 and 2013....environment central to the themes. Kevin keeps me posted on how things are going at Hawthorn. I met Doug Prosser at Hawthorn a few months ago and all looking good. Kevin sends me copies of The Bellcord....and just last week I was on the Hawthorn Museum website reading about the Box Hill - Doncaster Tram for a Connie performance in Box Hill late in November.
