This label comes from the newsagency and stationery shop of James Deany. He took over the business of O.Gorman in Timor Street in 1901 and was in partnership with Robert Armstrong until 1906. His business was purchased in 1918 by Mrs Matilda Rowan. Deany was a Warrnambool Councillor (1911-1917), Mayor 1915-1916 and M.L.A. According to neighbourhood folklore the large tree to the rear of the cottage was planted in memory of a son of the owner, who was killed during World War One. This ledger relates to the original Woollen Mill which commenced trading in 1875 on the site of the Meat Preserving Company. It shows entries from July 1875 which lists the following men as shareholders: James Alexander, William Armstrong, Robert Hood, Anthony Mackenzie, William Ross, William Rutledge, Francis Tozer, Joseph Ware. It operated until 1882 when it was destroyed by fire. This ledger contains details of one of the earliest industries in Warrnambool. It provides the details of expenses as well as the names of the earliest shareholders. As such it is a significant part of Warrnambool’s history.Large tan, leather bound cover with dark brown scroll pattern around edges. Spine and front cover have maroon labels with gold writing.
