Film - DVD, Newell Barrett, Tower Hill, W. H Barrett, 2012
William Horne Barrett was the great uncle of the donor and maker of the DVD, Newell Barrett. The DVD contains photographs of Barrett’s enlistment and embarkation for England and the photographs are accompanied by a commentary and text. Sergeant William Barrett enlisted in the 39th Battalion, C Company in 1916, and, although he came from Ballarat, his name is on the Warrnambool War Memorial as a local enlistment. His mother was Mary Ann Horne and the Hornes were farmers in the Allansford/Nullawarre area. Barrett was killed in action in October 1917 at Broodseinde, Belgium. He was buried near the trench he was occupying and today has no known grave. This DVD is of some significance as it contains information on a World War One soldier who was connected to the Warrnambool area through his mother, a member of the Horne family who were farmers in the Allansford/Nullawarre area. It will be useful for researchers. This is a DVD-R disc of the enlistments and embarkation details of William Horne Barrett (World War One). The running time is 56 minutes. The cover has two photographs of the Canberra Australian War Memorial in muted colour and an inset photograph of William Barrett. Front Cover: ‘William Horne Barrett, died 4th October 1917, Battle of Broodseinde, Belgium, Visit to the War Memorial, May 23rd to 24th 2012, Part One, Enlistment to England’. world war one, horne family, william horne barrett -

Memorabilia - Tobruk Monument Souvenir
The image on this shield is a representation of the memorial in the middle of the Tobruk War Cemetery. Tobruk War Cemetery incorporates the burial ground used during the siege and the memorial erected there at the time by the Australians has been replaced by a permanent memorial of similar design. Many battlefield graves in the desert have been brought into the cemetery. There are now 2,282 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in Tobruk War Cemetery. 171 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties known or believed to be buried among them. This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region.A small plastic shield that depicts the Tobruk Memorial in the centre and Tobruk written across the top in gold lettering.Across the top "TOBRUK"world war 11, rats of tobruk, tobruk, tobruk memorial -

It was unveiled in 1903 by Colonel John Hoad. (Later Sir John Hoad) a one time Wangaratta resident who became chief of the Australian General Staff. The second memorial bears the names of residents who were killed in the two World Wars as well as the Vietnam War. It was unveiled in 1923 by Colonel Scott, a former borough engineer. The image includes 2 x 32 pound cannons taken from HMS Nelson, a Royal Navy warship built between 1809-1814. The Nelson was transferred to the Victorian Colonial Navy as a cut down two decker in 1867.. The ship arrived in Port Phillip on 4 February 1868 and decommissioned in 1893. Postcard, Unknown, Kew Cemetery, 1905
This view of the Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery is dated to 1905 by the inscription and postmark on the reverse. It provides an important visual record of this part of the Cemetery. The postcard can be used to identify the original configuration of the roads and vegetation, some of which was subsequently removed (eg the bunya pine at right). On the Victorian Heritage Database, the construction period given for the Springthorpe Memorial is given as 1897-1907, yet this view of the Memorial in 1905 would suggest that it was virtually completed at an earlier date. (It should be noted that additions such as the wheel of life sculpture were not completed until 1910).This dated photograph is historically important as its inscription confirms it to be one of the earliest postcard representations of the Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery. It also provides visual evidence of the size and extent of the landscaping by 1905, particularly the layout of the roads (now altered), plantings of the period, and the extent of the land occupied by the Springthorpe Memorial and its gardens, which was subsequently reduced by the trustees of the cemetery in the 1930s. Panoramic view of the entrance driveway in Boroondara General (Kew) Cemetery. At left can be seen the Springthorpe Memorial, and further down on the left the entrance gate, or one of the gates, to the Memorial. Inscribed on reverse: "Miss Brown / Shuan [sic] / Grosvenor Street / M. Brighton. Postcard, A Temple Tomb , Boroondara, 1900-1910
A temple tomb in the form of a Greek temple with a triangular pediment. Dark pillars on a flat, paved base support the plinth of the memorial. The memorial is situated on lawn, surrounded by trees and shrubs. Between the pillars, a glass enclosure can be clearly seen. The enclosure was removed at a later date. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the Springthorpe Memorial, while Bertram Mackennal sculpted the statuary on the sarcophagus. William Guilfoyle is belived to have advised on the design of the garden. An early black and white postcard of the Springthorpe Memorial in the Boroondara General Cemetery. There are numerous often undated postcards showing the memorial. This example features two women standing at left and a man at right. Based on the women's costumes, the postcard can be dated to 1900-1910.A Temple Tomb / Boroondara springthorpe memorial, boroondara general (kew) cemetery, postcards -- cemeteries, postcards -- kew (vic.) -
