A child walking near the shaft saw the ground collapse and shortly afterwards smoke drifting up. He told his parents who called the Bendigo Police. The area around the mouth of the saft was covered in cracks and seemed likely to collapse. Earlier a nearby resident had placed old iron and metal sheets over the area so that children would not walk on it. Once again children were attracted to it. Handwritten extracts from the New Chum Railway Mine Manager's Report 17/2/03. Mine Manager W Hicks. Extracts: Machinery. New Boiler is giving every satisfaction. While bailing water after the Xmas holidays, one of the ropes broke with a full tank of water. The tank being fitted with safety appliances, acted. Therefore no damage was done to the shaft. Document - ROBERT CARR: CORRESPONDENCE AND LIFE HISTORY INFORMATION
Robert Carr - correspondence to BHS and life history information sent back to writer re Carr (Great Extended Hustlers). Robert Carr was born Magherfelt Ulster 1833 and educated in agricultural pursuits. He arrived at Eaglehawk (part of Sandhurst) 4 miles from Bendigo in 1853 and began alluvial mining in 1855. Robert was on the committee to establish the Presbyterian Church at Eaglehawk. Robert began reef mining at Hustlers and Extended Hustlers mines and was manager in 1881. Robert was also a past Secretary of Oddfellows. In the years 1871-2 the mine yielded marvellous cakes of gold. He was a model mine manager. During 1872 he was on the committee of School of Mines. In the year 1873 he fell 60 feet down an abandoned shaft and not badly hurt. Robert died in May 1893, aged 60 years, and at the time of death was director of Great Extended Hustlers, Hustlers Company. Addressed to Tennant Creek. b/ Letter inside addressed ,dated 23//8/1938, addressed to W Studderd from Gerald J Pigott Letter is introducing Mr F Stanistreet (Bendigo) whom he met on M V Korlana. Mentions holidaying in Java, Malaya & Sumatra. Mr Stanistreet is a pastoralist engaged I sheep raising, will be passing through via Alice springs and Adelaide. His brother a mining man requested him to convey his impressions of the Tennant field. Goes on to ask him to assist where he is able. (written on blue writing paper). c/ Also enclosed in envelope a, was a envelope with a letter inside, on the front addressed to L N Studderd, Esq., Mining Warden, Tennant Creek. Written on the left side, for J J Stanistreet. On back of envelope message to W Studderd. Letter tells about the iron mine in Tennant Creek, the shortage of water, investors, size of mine, water bores, approach to town. d/ Letter from J J Stanistreet Sent, Re Tennants Creek Mines NT.
