Kiewa Valley Historical SocietyPapers - Bogong Village & the 'Commissioner's' Lodge & Progress Association Members, c 1997/1998
Bogong Village was built by the SECV in 1940 for the workers of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. In 1971, 30 houses were furnished for use as holiday homes for SEC personnel throughout the State. From 1989 to 1993 the houses were restored & renovated.During the 1990s the buildings in the village had been leased to private owners. Many of them rented their houses for tourists. The Commissioner's lodge was on the other side of the Mt Beauty - Falls Creek road, above Bogong Village. Wally Baldwin ran it in the 1960's.It was destroyed by the 2003 bushfires.These papers present a history of 'the Commissioner's lodge' and Bogong Village in the 1990's. The Progress Association was an active community group in 1963/64.Papers advertising Bogong Village & the Lodge for accommodation with rates 1997/1998. Describes the alternatives, maps and cafe hours, Also, 'Jan's Recollections' and on the back of these pages a hand written list of members of the the Progress Association 1963-64 as 'per Mr A. McCullough's spiel'. There are two copies of Tara Light, St Patrick’s Murrumbeena church newsletter. The first one is from November 1969 and the second is April 1971. Both newsletter contain brief history of the church and lists of people and businesses that advertised in Tara Light. For both copies, there is a picture of the church exterior on the front page. The second document is an order of service for an Inter Church advent service at St Patrick’s Catholic Church. The particular service was done on 17/12/1987. Float passing by the stoned retainer wall of Our Lady Help of Christians near the corner of Henry Street and Main Road Eltham. The float included a bark hut encompasing the motorised vehicle towing a trailer representing pioneers with a banner reading "The true heroes our pioneers". People dressed in historical costume sit on the float. This same float also participated in the Centenary parade in 1971. Floats were generally organised by community groups. EDHS would be pleased to learn which group organised this float. St Kilda Library was designed in 1971 by Enrico Taglietti (1926-2019). It was to be constructed in two stages. Stage 1 was completed in 1973. Stage 2 as designed by Taglietti did not proceed. Instead, alterations were designed in 1992-93 by Ashton Raggatt McDougall Architects (ARM). In 1993-94, the floor area of the library was enlarged to include a new entry and disabled ramp and a pedestrian thoroughfare between Carlisle and Duke streets. B 1920 Trained as a Deaconess and then took up a position with the Methodist Department of Christian Education where she worked for 15 years. Then joined the Joint Board of Christian Education staff in 1961 and worked there until 1970. Miss Reid was one of the earliest women to become ordained when it was allowed. Ordained in 1971 her first ministry was Ormond and Carnegie South. In 1975 she moved to Rosanna, then Strathmore in 1981. Given permission to retire in August 1985 due to ill health. This plan of Lum Road Estate includes layout of roads, gardens, building and carparks. From 1970 until August 1971 Robin Boyd and his practice Romberg & Boyd Architects worked on designs for housing on the Lum Road Estate, Wheelers Hill. Berenice Harris, Linley Vellacott and Karl Fender drew many of the sketch plans for the project homes, while Robin Boyd drew the perspectives. This colour plan of the estate was drawn by Robin Boyd, but not signed. Frederick Romberg later annotated the drawing with details of its authorship. Colour plan of Lum road estate. Handwritten anonymous notes, possibly 1971, headed "Ask Alec" and identifying information the writer needed such as 'Present state of the project'. There is no indication of what the project was beyond dates for the acceptance of tenders, start of construction and date of completion etc. Appears to be part of the review of the residences done at that time. When ideas for renovating and upgrading one of the homes was being considered. Apparently building would start in March 1972 and be completed before the end of 1972. This store in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was first opened by James Young in November 1866. In October 1869 it was purchased by William Anderson and was operated by members of the Anderson family until 1971. The site of the store was on the southern side of Main Street on the eastern side of Eddie Toole Park. On the opposite side of the street was the site of the former Post Office on the northern side of Main Street. The store was first named the Border Mills Store during James Young's ownership and was later known as the Border Store (Anderson & Co.).Small black and white photograph showing Anderson’s store. It shows a large stone building with a corrugated iron verandah which bears a painted sign of the name of the business: GROCERS. ANDERSON & Co. DRAPERS. Behind a brick parapet rises a hip roof with one chimney visible. Four men stand in casual poses ranged along the verandah. A post and rail fence runs along the road frontage. A tree is planted in an ornamental wrought iron plant protector on the inside of the fence.On the back in decorative print: “ New York Photographic Adelaide Travelling Brand Chas. F. Macnab was the minister of St Michael's Uniting Church (formerly Collins Street Independent Church) from 1971 to 2016. Macnab was born to J. D. Macnab and Mary Anne Louisa Hughes on 21 June 1931. Macnab married his wife, Sheila, in 1958. They have three children, two daughters and a son. He was made a member of the Order of Australia for his contributions to psychotherapy and religion. Training and psychological work - Macnab holds a Doctor of Divinity degree from the University of Aberdeen. He has honorary doctorates from the University of Melbourne and RMIT in psychology and applied science. In 1961, Macnab opened the Cairnmillar Institute, a clinical psychological centre, the largest in Australia, which was for some time the largest training body for psychologists and counsellors in the country. He was its Executive Director. Macnab founded and is director of the Australian Foundation for Aftermath Reactions which provides trauma treatment and training. He is a Fellow of the Australian Psychological Society. Following a ministry at Prahran Presbyterian Church from 1961 to 1970, Macnab became minister of the then Collins Street Congregational Church, now known as "St Michael's on Collins", in 1971. The medallion is a 1951 Commemorative being 100 years of Government and discovery of gold in Victoria. The winner K.M. Mcleod is believed to be Kenneth Meadowbank McCleod. He enlisted initially in 1915 but was discharged medically unfit in 1916, re enlisted in 1917 No 3840 and served in the 4th LH Regt, discharged from the AIF on 6.12.1919. Refer Cat No 1805P. There were two Billiard Tables in the Soldiers Memorial Institute in what was called the Billiard room. This was a source of income for the Bendigo Branch for some 70 years. One table was sold in 1967 as usage had declined and the last one was sold in 1994..1) Medallion circular bronze, front depicts 2 gold miners, oround outside is text, centre is engraved with details of who was presented with the item. Rear has a depiction of a horse carrying a man and a woman which depicts "Equality & Justice is Freedom" .2) Container for the medallion, rectangular shape brown colour, front has in gold a Coat of Arms with "Victoria" under. inside lid is a cream silk lining with the makers details in gold, medallion is set in red velvet. lid is hinged in brass with a brass closing catch.On face of Medallion, "Centenary of Government of Victoria 1851 - 1951". This was a School of Mines Ballarat tie. The School of Mines was established in 1870, making it Australia's third oldest tertiary institution. The School of Mines had two divisions - a tertiary division and a technical division. The tertiary division provided higher education courses such as mining engineering, geology, education and business studies, while the technical division provided such programs as wool classing, plumbing and bricklaying. The organisation remained in that form until the 1967 when it was split into three institutions, Ballarat School of Industries, Ballarat Technical School, and Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. They remained three entities until 1976. These three green polyester ties have a small SMB crest set within two gold diagonal pin stripes (5cm apart) in the middle of the wider front and one on the narrower end. Badorf Shoe Company, Inc. was started in Lititz, PA, by brothers Norman and Paul Badorf. The company was owned and operated by the Badorf family for nearly 40 years until its purchase by Ura Gingerich in 1967. Forty six years later, the family tradition has continued and the company is now operated by Ura’s son Duane Gingerich and grandsons, Justin and Brandon Gingerich. Robin Cocks (1941- ) and Peter Carmichael (1942 - ) formed their partnership in 1967, and designed some of Australia's most innovative project houses in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The award winning Civic Growth House (1974) was designed for Civic Construction. It provided clients with a modular grid and a range of components that allowed choice in location and spatial variation. The houses were designed to be expanded as families grew or as finance became available.
