In May 2016 the Nillumbik Historical Society invited Greensborough Historical Society to visit its historical centre at Ellis Cottage in Diamond Creek. Ellis Cottage was built in 1865 and is made of local uncut stone. The cottage is a typical farmers residence of this period. The stone construction is unique in this district as most construction is weatherboard. Side view of 'Shillllinglaw Cottage' in its original location on Main Road Eltham, 1964. The cottage was built by George Stebbings about 1859 and is made from hand made bricks laid in a Flemish bond pattern. In the 1960s it was marked for demolition to make way for the construction of new council buildings but a community campaign saved the cottage and it was re-located.Shillinglaw Cottage is itself historically, aesthetically and socially significant to the Shire of Nillumbik and is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). After the war, Phillip Harris produced a monthly in Sydney and renamed it 'Aussie: the Cheerful Monthly' from 1920. St Mary's Anglican Church was originally built on land in Oaklands Road. It was licensed in 1859 by Bishop Perry, the first Anglican bishop of Melbourne. From a family who had three generations that worked for Dennys Lascelles. This notice is advertising the upcoming auction of Mossgiel estate through the Dennys Lascelles Company. The auction would take place at The Wool Exchange. Stawell Post office built in March 1875 replacing the 1860 weather board building in the early Township of Stawell. The stucco exterior was described as modern Italian, and the building had excellent proportions. Special reference was made to the use of slate from Great Western. Saint Joseph’s Convent Patrick Street once the family home of the Kinsella family. The house was built in 1900 by architect M. Ryan and building contractor A. J. Barnes for Thomas Kinsella who occupied the home till he died in 1902. Tram tracks can be clearly seen in this image. Horse trams were introduced late in 1887, the line up Sturt St to the Lake and Gardens being built first. Note these tracks do not have any electricity above them - electric trams did not appear until 1905. St Andrews Kirk steeple was erected in 1884.Previously unknown image of Ballarat. This photograph of 'Harmony Vale' homestead was taken by Daisy Rowse c1917. It is a copy of the original. 'Harmony Vale' was the home built c1860 by early settler Jabez Richardson and his wife Sarah Ann. Jabez Richardson arrived in 1855 with the Child and Jeeves families. The building and barn stood until 1933. SS Pioneer was a steam dredging ship which was in service with the Department of Ports & Harbours, Melbourne, Australia, from 1905 to 1950. The Pioneer (aka SS Pioneer) was a steel steam driven pump driven sand dredge. She was built in Glasgow, Scotland for the Victorian Dept of Board of Works in 1905. The building is the Sunbury Post and Telegraph Office and residence, which was built on the corner of Brook and Evans Street in 1892. Prior to that time the postal service ion Sunbury was conducted at the railway station. The children from Bulla Primary School visited Glengala Primary School near Sunshine in March 1993. During their visit they joined in a number of activities with the Glengala children. In this photograph they were practicing soft ball skills in the covered courtyard area. Glangala school was one of the newer schools built in the Western suburbs in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Some of the students from Bulla Primary School were taken to the local recreation ground to meet the former councillor. Pauline De Luca who was there to 'turn the first sod at the site'. The work was done by the former Bulla Shire Council on the Bulla Community Centre. The house was built in 1883, possibly to encourage development of housing on the first urban land subdivision in Surrey Hills, the Windsor Park Estate (in the Windsor Crescent area). This coincided with the opening of the Surrey Hills Railway station. The first occupant was John Brown Nicholson, police magistrate.
