Dr James Taverney set up practice in Wodonga on Monday 19th August 1946. His practice was initially located in rooms at the residence of Mr J. F. Turner in Beechworth Road. In the following years, Dr Taverney purchased a large part of the garden from the Turner family and built this two-storey building where he went into practice with Dr Schlink. The building contained the surgery and a residence. It has features of Art Deco architecture. The exterior consists of painted brick with a curved parapet that conceals the roof. The windows are metal framed and the door frames are timber. The verandahs feature wrought iron balustrading and posts. There is also an upper balcony. Dr Taverney - known to many as Dr Tav - was a loyal medical practitioner in Wodonga for 40 years, retiring in 1987. He was also a member of the committee which helped to establish the Wodonga District Hospital which opened with 60 beds in 1954. Other doctors who practised from this site included Dr Fitzpatrick, Dr Leberne and Dr Robinson. In about 1991 the building was purchased by a group of local businessmen led by Tom Christiansen who named it Gundowring House after his hometown. Langi Dorn, Fay Street. This house is reminiscent of ‘ye olde’ England, with its steep-pitched gabled roof. The rectangular single storey building with two attics has a warm atmosphere, created in part by the extensive use of timber in walls and floors. The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and is listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced.An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de visite' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Prior to Faraday and Kent establishing a paint retail business of this site, there was a car hire business called Cobb & Co and prior to this the site was a Golden Fleece Service Station. Paul Towers bought the property from Faraday & Kent, for whom Norm Henderson was the proprietor, in 1996. In 2003 it was bought by Evan Lewis. The photograph shows the demolition or removal of the cable tram track at an un-identified location, showing the removal of the yokes and track where two cable lines crossed over each other. Shows the former cable tram yokes that supported the slot rails and some details of the cable tunnels and pits. The man in the bottom left could be cutting the yokes with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch. In the view are at the top of the photo some rails can be seen. There were a number of points where the cable tram crossed other electric or cable tram lines. Given the small work site and men involved the location could potentially be either Johnston Street and Smith Street or Johnston St and Nicholson Street. The 1955 Annual Report notes that work commenced following the completion of the Queen's visit in March 1954 and that all work was done by day-labour. The original line to the Essendon Aerodrome was constructed in 1943 to serve the airport and aircraft construction. It was funded by the Commonwealth Government. By 1976, patronage to the airport terminus in Vaughan St had dropped, the crossing of the highway to the Tullamarine Airport opened in 1970, was dangerous, and the highway needed to be widened. The new terminus was a short distance to the north between Mathews Ave and the Highway. This series of photographs show the last day of operations to the original terminus and the changeover, which was done in about 7 hours. No buses were required. It was done by workers of the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board. The line was later extended to Airport West. .1 - W5 789, (Essendon Airport Route 59) about to turn from Mathews Ave into Vaughan St. Has new track and footbridge in the foreground. .2 - W5 791 on the siding or spur at the airport terminus, the last tram to use this facility. .3 - W2 571, at the Airport terminus alongside Vaughan St on the last morning of the use of this terminus. Reproduction slide of a photograph of a cable tram, trailer number 201, with the destination or Carlton with the grip man and conductor standing in front of the tram. Both are young men. The conductor is adorned with his safety pins and trip slips, that he would punch a hole in when he sold or collected a fare. The bell punch in the conductor's right hand would sound a bell to indicate the fare had been collected. There is a church vicarage in the background - at Prahran terminus in Chapel Street outside Trinity church. Underneath the photo is written "A Paradox: two Badger ?" which is a reference to the General Strike in Brisbane of Jan 1912 by Brisbane Tramway Company workers over the wearing of Union badges which was strongly opposed by the Company Manager Joesph 'Boss' Badger. MMTB Tourist Bus No 79, Leyland TS8 chassis with the Canadian Carriage company body. The first photo shows a light livery when it was new in 1939 and the second a darker livery, the late 1940s. The first photo shows some possible damage to the front bumper bar. This was the second MMTB tourist bus. Imported by MMTB Chairman Bell from Canada in 1939. The body was built by the Canadian Car Co. Because of WW2, it was put into normal passenger service in July 1940 and had a mundane existence from that time onwards. It was sold to Melbourne Brighton Bus Lines however they never used it. See Reg Item 5112 for a photo of the bus in poor condition. Shows the interior of the cable tram engine house that was located on the corner of Gertrude Street and Nicholson Street in Fitzroy. Shows the steam pipes to two of the engine cylinders, the control equipment, and large cable winding wheels. Photo shows one of the Maximum Traction Bogies trams built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1913. Photographed in the Malvern depot yard - shows the very sharp curves. Most likely a newspaper photograph reproduced by the donor. The trams were only numbered on their ends at this time. Has two uniformed tramway men standing by the drop centre doors. Photos show W class 304 after delivery from Adelaide being unloaded by the travelling yard crane. The tram was built in Adelaide by the Holden Bodyworks and completed at the Workshops. The tram entered service on 14-8-1924. It was converted to a W2 class tram in Dec. 1932. The second photo shows the tram being loaded onto a horse-drawn jinker.
