Reserve Forces Day Council Boer War Commemorative Medallion 2012 Descendant Medallion with ribbon suitable medallion has been struck to allow descendants and supporters to honour those who served in this all-but forgotten conflict 100 years ago. The Reserve Forces Day Council recognises it was a War fought in the main by Reservists. Permanent forces were small in number with only a Permanent Force Artillery unit and a number of staff officers and soldiers serving in the war. The Reserve Forces Day Council’s objective is to "Raise the profile of the Reserve Forces and to thank serving and former members for their service, and their families and employers for their essential support." This medallion has been struck for descendants and in memory of those Soldiers who fought in the War. The "In Memory" medallion is oval 50mm high by 40 mm wide and bears the inscription "BOER WAR 1899-1902" bordering the face within a colour infill and a clear cover of epoxy. The central image is of an Australian soldier in a uniform of the era. The attractive medallion is 'gold', appearing as surrounds for the inscription. The neck ribbon is in the colours of the Queen’s official service medal, all enclosed in a presentation pouch. A space on the reverse side of the Medallion provides for a personal message to be engraved at a later time. An example is "Presented to Leslie Perrett Descendant of Tpr Frederick Avard, NSW Lancers who died in combat 10 October 1900". This item was owned by Athur Lock who lived in the Wodonga district after World War 11. As well as being a Rat of Tobruk, Arthur made a significant contribution to the community and was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1972 for services to young people and the Wodonga community. He was involved in the scouting movement for over 50 years. Arthur was also an amateur radio operator with call number VK3AULThis item is part of a collection of items owned by Athur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. This book contains a collection of poems written by English poet, Robert Browning, between 1833-1868. Robert Browning was an English poet and playwright whose dramatic monologues put him high among the Victorian poets. He was noted for irony, characterisation, dark humour, social commentary, historical settings and challenging vocabulary and syntax. Ruyton Girls' School has a long tradition of awarding prizes to students at annual "Speech Night" events. Speech Night at Ruyton is an extraordinary occasion. It is a time when we gather to celebrate both the year just lived and the contribution of our Year 12 girls to the life of our School. It is a night of stirring student speeches, acknowledgement of student endeavour and excellence and awe-inspiring performances by School choirs and ensembles. The Dawn Roach Memorial Prize is awarded for contribution to the sporting life of the school, and is awarded under a points system for participation. Dawn Roach was a former student at Ruyton Girls' School from 1937 until her sudden passing in 1938.The record has strong historic significance as it was awarded to a former notable student, Helen Gordon (maiden name Cole). Helen started at Little Ruyton in Prep 1940 and finished Year 12 in 1952 as School Captain, Bromby Captain, Form Captain for Matric, Tennis Captain, Hockey Captain, Swimming Vice Captain, and an award for Best All-Round Girl. She also played baseball for Victoria. After finishing school, Helen went on to graduate from the University of Melbourne as a physiotherapist in 1956. Her first position at age 19 involved setting up clinics with the Victorian Health Department Poliomyelitis Rural division. Helen’s strong ties to Ruyton continued when she held the position of President of the Old Ruytonians’ Association from the start of 1966 to the end of 1967. In 2019, Helen received an Order of Australia Medal for service to community health as a physiotherapist. She was also the recipient of the 2022 Victorian Senior Achiever Award at Parliament House. Helen passed away in July 2023 at age 88. Thousands of volunteers work tirelessly to conserve and protect the environment of Geelong and the Bellarine. Their work often goes unnoticed. In 'The Work of Nature' the National Wool Museum and the Environment Department at the City of Greater Geelong worked with photographer Nicole Marie to showcase the significant contribution of environment volunteers in our region. Each of the eight people showcased in these portraits were nominated by their peers and members of the community for their significant contribution to conserving and protecting the environment. Jon Duthie - Friends of the Bluff Sometimes the work that volunteer groups put in to bringing back nature goes completely unnoticed. When Jon and his colleagues began work at the Barwon Bluff the site was largely devoid of any vegetation. Today most new residents and visitors to Barwon Heads don’t even know that the site is actually a revegetation site. Jon is extremely knowledgeable, dedicated and passionate and has contributed significant amounts of time to raising awareness about the marine and coastal environment.
