The Third Australian-Jewish Almanac was published in Melbourne in 1967 to mark the 55th Anniversary of the Kadimah. Edited by the Cultural Committee of the Kadimah it provides a unique survey of the views and concerns of Jewish immigrants in Australia. The Almanac contains short fiction and non-fiction pieces including sections on the Kadimah, Jewish Life in Australia, How Others See Us, Essays and Stories, Poems and Drama. This is a copy of a letter to Sir John Leahy in 1986 inviting him to speak at a Legacy luncheon, it was then used as a draft in 1990 for another invitation, this time to Senator Jocelyn Newman, Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs. Note that women were now being invited to speak at Tuesday luncheons. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken about were many and varied. This draft to Senator Jocelyn Newman shows that from 1990 women were invited to speak at Legacy Luncheons. Edward George Dyson was born on 4 March 1865 at Morrison, near the Ballarat goldfields, the son of a miner. Dysons first collection of poetry, Rhymes from the Mines and Other Lines, was published in 1896 by Angus and Robertson. A second poetry collection Hello, Soldier!: Khaki Verse was published in 1919. Many of these verse were originally printed in the “Bulletin,” others in “Punch,” “The Leader” and Melbourne “Herald.” The book we hold at the RSL is the original edition and is No. 146 in our museum collection. Dyson contracted encephalitis in 1919 He died at his home in the Melbourne suburb of Elwood on 22 August 1931. Although a highly successful writer in his day, Dyson has since been overshadowed by contemporaries like Henry Lawson and A. B. Paterson , and also by the achievements of his brother Will Dyson , one of the leading political cartoonists of the early twentieth century.Hardback rectangular book. Letter thanking Legatee Rex Hall for congratulations for an award, accepting an invitation to speak at a future Legacy Luncheon, and the pride that Sir William takes in that the award recognizes the support of his wife Dulcie. Then there is a hand written note from L/- Rex Hall as a reply with possible dates that Sir William could speak. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons.
