John Marfell (1847-1927) established a hay and corn dealing business in Liebig Street in 1878 in partnership with Henry Phillips. In 1887 he built a grain store in Raglan Parade and carried this business on until his death. He also managed a Warrnambool flour milling company in Banyan Street and with several other local business men established the Warrnambool Woollen Mill. He was a Warrnambool Councillor for 22 years and Mayor in 1903.These labels are a mementoes of John Marfell a prominent late 19th and early 20th centuries business man in Warrnambool. This monument was originally situated on the median strip in High Street, outside the original Town Hall building, which subsequently became the town's Library, and is now the Shire Offices I.T Department. The memorial was moved some time in the 1960's to it's present site, which is now immediately surrounded by the Shire of Campaspe Echuca Library which was built in the early 2000's . The memorial now also mentions other wars of the 20th Century.The memorial now represents all people from the surrounding districts who have been lost to all Wars. The memorial is the focus of the Anzac Day ceremonies. With an increasing need to grow Melbourne's water supply, in 1973, the State Government announced plans for the development of Sugarloaf Reservoir. Two dams were to be built, one across the Yarra from the Yarra Brae property in Wonga Park to the Bend of Isles. Water was to be pumped from this dam to the higher level Sugarloaf Reservoir. Robert and Ada Zull built an Alistair Knox designed house at 2 (lot 8) Metery Road, Eltham, a one acre property for their family of five in the mid 1960s. This series of photographs shows the one story house with its roof in place. Susan Bennett, nee Zull's reminiscences are published in EDHS Newsletter, February and April 2020. "..The block was big.. Building the house was slow going...the house had a concrete floor and a roof, but no windows..."This series of photographs together with the account of personal remiscences provide a unique document of the construction of an Alistair Knox designed home. Local newspaper article calling for a new Heidelberg City library. Eventually the library in the basement of the Heidelberg Town Hall was re-established in a purpose built building. The Ivanhoe Library opened in 1965. This library is part of the Heidelberg Regional Library which also served Eltham and which also had need for a new dedicated library. Solid wooden box with rope handles was used to move library books from the Library at Ballarat School of Mines to the E J Barker Library at Mount Helen Campus. The Mount Helen Campus Library was opened in 1973. At that time it was Ballarat Institiute of Adult Education. This was the fore runner of what is now Federation University. The Crossways was built in the early 1920s and is the oldest building in Marysville. The Crossways historic inn survived the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires thanks to the efforts of its c-owner Greg Cherry and, in the days after the fires, provided a much-needed refuge to the Marysville community and firefighters. Built in 1780 as the Berwick for the East India trade. She was badly burnt in a fire and was bought and rebuilt by the navy in 1786 and renamed 'Sirius'. After her arrival in Port Jackson, she remained as a supply ship and sailed to the Cape of Good Hope in October 1788 to obtain food supplies for the starving colony. The Oakey Army Aviation Centre is a training facility formed in October 1943 at Oakey, Queensland. It was built with the purpose of providing a maintenance facility: the units would erect, repair and insect aircrafts and engines. At the end of the war in 1945, the depot was used to store surplus aircraft. In early 1946, the RAAF Station Oakey was disbanded and categorised ‘to be retained but not maintained’. Since then, the RAAF Station Oakey facilities have been used few times for some minor activities. The Farmers Arms Hotel was built on the corner of Main and Hailes Street in 1864 by George Iredale to cater for the ever increasing number of wood carters and other hauliers carting their wares between Melbourne, timber mills and the gold fields. "Saxam" was the home of the Kaye family (1886-1888) then William Santon, a former councillor and Mayor of Heidelberg. Saxam Homestead is a distinctive and substantial timber homestead built in the late 1880s as one of the notable rural properties in the St Helena area. In 2014 the house still stands but is in poor condition with most interior features removed. The site had a heritage overlay as shown. In February 2017, former Greensborough local Geoff Foard visited Greensborough Historical Society. Eric Barclay also came along. Many stories were exchanged and everyone present had an interesting day. Russel and Nancy Foard came in Greensborough shortly after the cessation of World War 2 and operated their Foard's Store until 1958. This is a Rose's Australia stereocard of Morningside. Built c1875, Morningside was the residence of John and Catherine D'Alton, it was located on site of present (2010) Colonial Motor Inn. c1900 it was owned by Langley family and was taking in paying guests. In 1909 it was leased by James and Grace D'Alton who continued to run a small guest house. In the late 1920's a small building was erected to serve as PO and telephone exchange. These are plans for proposed additions to the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The date of the drawings and the maker of the plans are unknown. The additions do not appear to have been built. The Church of Christ in Warrnambool was founded in 1875 after a meeting at the Warrnambool Temperance Hall. The building in Spence Street Warrnambool was erected in 1884 at a cost of £1600 and officially opened in 1885. This church was sold and in 2000 the congregation moved to a new building at 186 Raglan Parade (called Gateway Church of Christ).These plans are of some interest as being part of the history of a Warrnambool church – the Church of Christ Warrnambool. These are two rough drawings on cream-coloured paper showing proposed additions to the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The drawings are in pencil and include the front elevation plan and the first floor plan. The captions are in capital letters. In 1873 Teesdale residents formed an institute to provide literature to improve the minds. The site was gazetted on 25 October 1875 – a one acre site on the corner of Bridge Street and Mercer Terrace. A Mechanics Institute was built and later a supper hall was added in front of the institute. The mechanics institute and supper hall was destroyed by fire on the night of 29 March 1969. Rudder from the tug boat YORK SYME, built in 1961 by ADELAIDE SHIP CONSTRUCTION INTERNATIONAL - PORT ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA. It is sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands. Its gross tonnage is 149 tons. The rudder is believed to come from a lifeboat previously attached to the Tug. The tug York Syme operated in various ports in New Zealand until around 2011. It is believed this is when it went to the Cook Islands. The registered owner is unknown at this time.The rudder is from the 1961 Tug York Syme. Its size suggests it was from the tug's lifeboat or ancillary boat. It is an example of marine technology from the mid-20th century. Although small, it works on similar principles to 19th-century rudders from the large sailing ships. A dorade is a type of ventilator that allows air to move in and out of a vessel's cabin or engine room but baffles or screens within the box it is fitted to prevent the rain and seawater from getting inside. A Dorade was first seen in use on the "Dorade", an ocean racing yacht designed by Olin James Stephenson II and built in 1929. Since then there have been modifications to the original design. The yacht, Dorade, could have been named after the Mediterranian dorade fish.An early piece of marine equipment from the 1930s that still is in use today on smaller vessels to improve below-deck ventilation.Dorade vent cowl; a cast brass ventilator.
