In 1891 to 1983 there were three chemists near View Point Bendigo; they were A. Collins, 9 View St and Pall Mall; G. M. Dorman at 25 View St; E. L. Holdsworth, 9 Charing Cross and J. Holdsworth at 15 Charing Cross and Pall Mall. On the 20 June 1892 David Anderson (1861-1937) took over from A Collins as Chemist and Druggist at 9 View Street, opposite the Bank of Victoria. He had been manager for the three previous years. In 1895 to 1908 the David Anderson Chemist was at View Point. David Anderson's father William (Willie) died on the 7th April 1901 at View Place. David Anderson was married to Jeanette (Jessie) Riviere, Ironbark. David's nephew Rae Alexander Anderson OAM (1903-1986) was connected to St Paul's Church and a pharmacist at the Bendigo Hospital. Rae was the organist and choir master of the parish church of St Paul, Bendigo, 1931 - 1965. Rae's son Stuart Anderson from the Balgownie Winery 1969-1999; had also been a pharmacist.Certificate of Registration (Pharmacy Act of Victoria, No 558}; for David Anderson, Sandhurst. The original certificate has been pasted to cardboard and possibly had been framed. Chemists who worked in Orbost included Henry Cottman; James Alfred Dubois Williams; Harry Arthur Murray; Miss P.E .Mason (Phyllis Estelle?); Miss Sybil Monica Buzza; Thomas James Frayer; Australia Shaw; James David Torley; John William Zimmer; Dalkeith William Steele; William Thomas Hollingsworth; E.E. The tin was designed and used by the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. to store and sell golden syrup which is a by-product of cane sugar, molasses and treacle. The practices of early pharmacists are revealed through these items. The items have a clear association with Orbost.3210.15 is a rusty tin of CSR Golden Syrup. It is a yellow, red, brown, white tin with a black lid. used to sell and store golden syrup. The kilogram tin has the words 'golden syrup' printed in large red letters. There is a recipe for ANZAC BISCUITS on the back of the tin. Inside two concentric circles - "FROM THE AUSTRALIAN CANEFIELDS NATURALLY GOLDEN" around a drawing of a sugar refinery. 3210.16 is a glass jar with a black metal lid. Prize awarded to James Cleeland Shaw (BD 15/10/1862) for excellence in conduct and general proficiency. James entered Ballarat College 1870. Son of Mr. W.H.Shaw the Managing Director of the celebrated Phoenix Foundry which played such an important part in the early industrial history of Ballarat and who lived all his Ballarat life in a house in Armstrong Street South not far from Dana Street. Born in Ballarat on 15th October 1862 and attended Ballarat College 1870-1877. Was articled to Hardy and Madden of Ballarat Solicitors. Practised as a Solicitor in Ballarat for some years. Went to Western Australia in 1897 and acted for a time as Deputy Master of Western Australia Supreme Court. Was for some time partner with Drake Brockman now a judge but latterly practised as Shaw and Shaw in partnership with his brother Frank as Solicitors at 81 St. Georges Terrace, Perth, Western Australia. Example of prize ordered from London where they were specially bound and embossed with the College crest. Awarded by F J Thomas B A, principal under unusual circumstances 1874 - 1876.Preface dated 1859. Pierce Butler (1865-1927) was born in Kilmore and moved to Bendigo aged 12. He initiall worked with Mr Trumble, chemist before he became assistant to Mr A Collins in his new practice in View Street opposite the Bank of Victoria. At this time he was primarily a dentist. He then became the dentist operating out of London's pharmacy, 24 Pall Mall. By 1910 he was advertising as a dispenser and dentist at London's pharmacy. By 1915 he was operating his own business as a chemist and dentist in Mitchell St where he continued until his death. In 1891 he married Elizabeth Anderson (1867-1937) and they lived in Macrae Street. Pierce Butler was also a Justice of the Peace. Small round cardboard Pill Box from P. The author of this book, and many other similar books, was Sir John F. W. Herschel (John Frederick William), 1792-1871. He was a famous mathematician, astronomer, chemist and botanist. In 1838 he was created a baronet, of Slough in the County of Buckingham. The results of his research and discoveries are in use today. The book is part of Flagstaff Hill's Pattison Collection, a large group of books and records, some of which are rare and valuable. The collection was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute, which was founded in 1853 and is named after Warrnambool's Public Librarian, Ralph Pattison. Thomas Longman founded his publishing firm in 1724 in London by the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, including Longman Brown Green Longman and Roberts, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is significant for its association with the author, Sir John F W Herschel, and his discoveries and inventions, some of which are still used today.. The book is important for its connection with the London publisher Longmans, Green, Brown, Longmans and Roberts. The firm has been established for over two centuries and is renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes.
