It would have been attached to a horse collar and used to to distribute the load around a horse's neck and shoulders when pulling a wagon or plough. The collar often supports and pads a pair of curved metal or wooden pieces, called hames, to which the traces, which attach to the wagon or plough, of the harness are attached. The collection of thirteen model horse drawn vehicles were carefully handmade by Mr Chas W Davis 1925 - 2002. He was a talented artist and saw doctor. This model of a horse drawn Small Wheel Lorry replicates the vehicle that enjoyed respect from the public during the 1880's and early 1900's. Samuel Lynn (1865-1949) was a farmer and grazier at Jarrahmond. He bred Clydesdales. The 13th Light Horse Regiment was formed at Broadmeadows in Victoria in March 1915; it was the third light horse regiment to have been raised in that state. Its regimental number quickly led to it becoming known as the "Devil's Own" regiment. It left Australia on 28 May and disembarked in Egypt on 29 June 1915. The 7th Australian Light Horse (VMR) was raised from companies of the pre-federation Victorian Mounted Rifles mainly in the central area of Victoria and the Goulburn valley. In 1912 it was renumbered 15th Light Horse with the motto Pro Rege et Patria and retaining the territorial title Victorian Mounted Rifles. This book belonged to Joseph Conn who was a blacksmith at Conn's Corner in Dennington. The author of the book was H Sample, an American professor who was a horse trainer.. In 1884 he was in Warrnambool giving a demonstration of his system of horse training. It is conjectured that Joseph Conn attended the demonstration and bought the book.This book is of some some interest because of its association with a local blacksmith, Joseph Conn and an American horse trainer, Professor Sample..This is a hard covered book with gold printing on the front cover and spine and an image in gold of a horse and a dog in a horse shoe.There are 284 pages. This bit was part of a bridle worn by a horse in a Light Horse Regiment during the Second World War. The style of this bit is similar to the British Universal Pattern (UP) 1902 bridle, as worn by horses in the Australian light horse, artillery, and horse drawn transport between circa 1902 and 1942.Dark metal horse bit constructed of four sections: two side sections, one middle section which sits between two sides and a chain which attaches to a loop on each side. Side sections have two large loops and a straight section with two rectangular cut outs. Middle section is straight with dip in centre, possibly for the horse's tongue. Chain is attached on the left side and hooks onto a hook on right side. Left side has "L" stamped into metal. In December 1941, the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. The pair generally drove a four wheeled wagon pulled by five horses along a hand carved winding track through the mountains. Seymour was selected as the site for a military training camp by General Kitchener during his 1909 visit to Australia to advise the government of defence needs. His novel, Heart of the World, was an adventure set in Mexico. This book is part of the Pattison Collection at Flagstaff Hill. The book was published in 1895 by the British firm George G Harrap & Co. Ltd. of London, a firm that specialised in high-quality publishing with many of the books containing fine line drawings.The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Lieutenant Colonel Archibald McGibbon McLaurin, 8th Light Horse died of illness at Beirut Lebanon 23 November 1918.. Part of a collection of photographs taken by an unknown photographer serving with 8th Light Horse Regiment in Middle East 1916-1918.The 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF was raised at Broadmeadows Victoria in September 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander White and formed part of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade. The regiment served at Gallipoli where in a courageous but ill-fated charge at the Nek on 7 August 1915 it suffered horrendous casualties including Lieutenant Colonel White. Rebuilt in Egypt under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Maygar VC the regiment went on the serve throughout the Middle East Campaign. Colonel Maygar died of wounds at Beersheba when the regiment was attacked by enemy aircraft while waiting to follow up the successful charge of the 4th LH Brigade on 30 October 1917. The 8th Light Horse AIF was disbanded in 1919, but soon after re-raised as the 8th (Indi) Light Horse in the Citizen Military Forces, superseding 16th (Indi) Light Horse. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. The 10th Australian Light Horse (VMR) was raised from companies of the pre-federation Victorian Mounted Rifles mainly in the Gippsland area of Victoria. In 1912 it was renumbered 13th Light Horse with the motto Loyal till Death and the territorial title Gippsland. Following World War One the regiment retained its number, title and motto. The regiment trained as a cavalry regiment till August 1940, when it converted from horse to mechanised initially as 13th Motor Regiment then 13th Armoured Regiment.
