John Black pictured as a young child, was the only son of Constantine and Efstathia Black (Mavrokefalos). John's parents came to Australia in the early 1900s. They owned and operated the Paris Residential Cafe at 56 Swanston Street in the second decade of the 20th century. John is the brother of Olga and Nina Black, both of whom were very active in Ithacan and Greek community cultural life. Stathi Raftopoulos (middle) and Angelo Petalas (left) and a Mr Palaris are pictured filming at Madden Grove Kew. Both Stathi and Angelo were passionate about cinema. Stathi brought Greek cinema to Melbourne and Angelo ran the Melbourne University Cinema. IPS treasurer Eugenia Vlass-Tsalikis and president Anthony Drakopoulos together with Maria Johnson were guests at a function at MacRobertson Girls' High School, which was held in honour of Loula Rodopoulos (nee Raftopoulos). Loula was very active the community and was a board member of the Victorian Women's Trust. The mural behind the guests depicts some of the Greek myths of the sea, the woodlands, the mountains and the rivers. The work was installed at the cnr of Bridgport St and the Midland Hwy, adjacent to the Daylesford Library, in 1999. The work was commissioned by the Friends of the Library, Daylesford and funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council. Poemscape: a physical anthology is a much loved site specific installation work commissioned by the Friends of the Library, funded by Arts Victoria and the Australia Council, made by Daylesford resident Patrick Jones in response to his interests in the provision of public food, the development of locavore sensibilities and the rethinking of economies of material accountability and regard. Patrick Jones is a poet and non-fiction writer, a visual artist and ecological thinker. In 2013 Patrick Jones was awarded the degree of Doctor in Creative Arts from the University of Western Sydney for his thesis, 'Walking for food. Certificate of appreciation presented to Private George Melville Balfour, VX6104, for voluntary enlistment for active service overseas. Prior to the war, George Balfour lived at Wangakeirra(?), Kangaroo Ground. Post war, he lived at Lavender Park, Eltham. He served in the 2/8 Batallion, AIF, in North Africa and taken prisoner of war in Greece. In the UK post May 1945 and in Australia December 1949. Baskerville’s Echo references the Ancient Greek myth of the nymph Echo. The goddess Hear punished Echo for misusing her gift of voice by ensuring that she could only echo the voice of others. Echo falls in love with Narcissus, who spurns her and instead falls in love with his own reflection in a pool and drowns trying to reach it. Vicki Kapourlakos, Kristalenia Collins and Peter Paxinos were some of the members of the Ithacan community that attended a function held at MacRobertson Girls High School (MGHS) to honour the work and contribution to community of the late Loula Rodopoulos. Loula was a former student at MGHS. She worked tirelessly for community and was a founding trustee and member of the Victorian Women's Trust. Methodist Church, Centre Road. The first church building on the site was built of timber in 1850. In 1865, the wooden church building was sold and a new brick church was built, this building was expanded over the years to accomodate an ever increasing congregation. In 1928 the parish opened yet another new brick church - which still stands today (2022). Invitation/ticket and program for a screening of Sound Films made available by the Department of Information, held at St Kilda Town Hall on 12 November 1941. The films were of events in Tobruk, Bardia, Greece, Syria and Britain. The memorial is situated on lawn, surrounded by trees and shrubs. Between the pillars, a glass enclosure can be clearly seen. The enclosure was removed at a later date. Harold Desbrowe-Annear designed the Springthorpe Memorial, while Bertram Mackennal sculpted the statuary on the sarcophagus. Peter John Lucas is the man in the photograph. He was born in 1929 and died in 1985. He was married to Iris Lucas (nee Flocas) and father of Geremy, Dean and Kaylene. He was passionate about his Greek Ithacan heritage and was a great supporter and valued member of the Club. Peter held the position of Vice President in the 1970s. Hygieia (Ύγεια, lit., “healing”) probably began as an abstraction, which later became personified. She does not appear to be a deity of extremely ancient origin, and there has been much scholarly debate as to exactly where and when worship of her first developed. Her cult most likely arose in the territory of Sikyon, where she was worshipped along with Asklepios, the legendary god of medicine. In later times Hygieia came to be regarded as the daughter of Asklepios, although her cult was not introduced to Epidauros, his principal sanctuary, until at least the 4th century BC. The earliest large-scale devotion to her is found in the aftermath of the Plague of Athens (420BC). The cult of Hygieia was taken to Rome, along with that of Asklepios (Æsculapius), in 293BC, to avert a pestilence. Here she gradually became integrated with the old Italian god Salus. Towards the end of the pagan era both Hygieia and Asklepios lost their specific associations with medicine, and became general protective deities. A beautiful wooden statue representing Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health.The figure is highly polished, which brings out the intricate grain of the timber. In it, the sculptor has endeavoured to combine the qualities of a classical pose with a contemporary yet timeless surreal sensuality. It will stand on a stone pedestal about 90cm high, and be placed in a prominent location in the Melbourne headquarters. The College’s statue is semi-abstract in style, carved from a single piece of jarrah. The piece of timber from which it is fashioned was salvaged from the remains of a century-old shearing shed on Rifle Downs, at Darkan in the south-west of Western Australia.

Thomas Stoddart, 1828 - 1905, bought 12 white marble statues during a visit to Italy. Stoddart arranged for them to be shipped to Victoria and placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. These statues were unveiled in the gardens on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1884. His intention was for the statues to adorn and add interest to the gardens. Pictured is staff and actors from the new Playhouse Theatre, Melbourne. At some point Theodore Polities (pictured third from left) from Lefkada ran the theatre's confectionary bar and he also took on the operational management of the theatre when it was experiencing financial difficulties. Ithacan Gerasimos Dionysios Gavrilis (know as George Denis Gabriel) appeared in various theatrical productions at the Playhouse. Greek school concerts were also held at the theatre. The Playhouse Theatre was situated in the former Aikman Street, South Melbourne (now Southbank) near Princes Bridge and was a venue repertory theatre. It first opened in 1912 as the Snowden Picture Theatre in the days of silent films and was rebuilt in 1916 as legitimate play house theatre. As the Playhouse it was the original home of the Melbourne Repertory Society. It was renamed the Garrick in 1933. The property was sold in 1937 for ₤17 500 ($35 000) to the Australian Paper Manufacturers company following which they donated the seating to the University of Melbourne's Union Theatre. The group, members of the Kallinikos family, is on board a ship, possibly farewelling a relative who is departing Melbourne for a return visit to Ithaca. A few Ithacans travelled back home during the 1940s and 1950s, and overtime more families made the long 30 day boat trip to Greece. The bridal couple are Dimitri and Kalypso Sofianos on their wedding day. Dimitri arrived in Australia in his teens in 1914 and Kalypso much later in 1936. She and Dimitri were both from the same village of Kioni and they met after her arrival and married in 1937. The ceremony took place at the Greek Orthodox Church in Victoria Parade, East Melbourne. The use of sails to propel a ship along its course dates back at least to 3000 BC., to the Egyptians who used sails to move their vessels up and down the Nile. Sailing ships then developed with the Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Vikings and other cultures. Their use was widespread until the 19th century which saw the development of the steam engine, and more recently, the diesel engine. The picture is of Angelos Lekatsas (Lucas), his wife and three sons. Angelos was the second president of the Society between 1924.-1926. He was also president of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria for three terms, from 1930-32, 1934-40 and 1949-52. Angelos arrived in Australia around the turn of century shortly after his brothers, Ioannis and Andreas. They owned the Lucas Cafe under the clocks of Flinders Street Station and the business remained in the family till the 1960s. A black and white photograph of a family outdoors.
