Sculpture, Margaret Baskerville, Echo, c.1901

Historical information

Baskerville’s Echo references the Ancient Greek myth of the nymph Echo. The goddess Hear punished Echo for misusing her gift of voice by ensuring that she could only echo the voice of others. Echo falls in love with Narcissus, who spurns her and instead falls in love with his own reflection in a pool and drowns trying to reach it. Grieving, Echo fades away until only her voice remains.
