Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. This plaque was issued to the Hoffman family of Beechworth commemorating the death of Frederick Hoffman who was killed in actionItem is part of the Hoffman Family collection.The round bronze Memorial Plaque is 120mm in diameter. It shows Britannia and a lion on the front and bears the inscription: "He died for freedom and honour". Plaque accompanying chainsaw statues by Leigh Conkie. These chainsaw sculptures were in Greensborough War Memorial Park, sculpted by Leigh Conkie in 2003. The trees surrounding the park were removed when disease made them unsafe, and the sculptures were created from the stumps. St Katherine's Church St Helena dates from 1858. The Church was built by Major Anthony Beale in memory of his wife Katherine Rose Beale. The plaque was originally intended for the Murray Road Bridge. The Murray Road Bridge is of state historical and architectural significance. With the Newlands Street Bridge it is one of a pair of bluestone bridges constructed by prison labour in Coburg and is situated within the immediate vicinity of the Pentridge Prison. The bridge has one of five largest spans of stone bridges built in Australia, of which at least three survive. This plaque was made to commemorate the generous funds donated Mr A.M Nicholas in 1936 almost entirely funding the building of the new Mission to Seamen at Port Melbourne opened in 1937. Mr Nicholas died in Feb 1937. The new building was opened on the 4th of December 1937 by Lord Huntingfield, the plaque was dedicated and unveiled the same by his nephew Mr Nicholas Lightfoot. The plaque was removed from the building which ws demolished in 1995. The plaque is really similar to the memorial plaque made in memory of Ethel Godfrey (see item 2053).Mr Nicholas together with Mr HW Shmith organised rights to produce Aspirin aka ASPRO in Australia in 1915 during WW1. The Nicholas Family were significant philanthropists in Melbourne and Victoria and this plaque commemorates his gift to the Mission for visiting seamen between 1937 and late 20th C. Olive Cramer who passed away in August 1966, this plaque along with an Organ Lamp were dedicated to her on the 2nd of April 1967. In 2013, Gary Partington generously donated farm implements to Greensborough Historical Society. These implements had been used at the family property "Willis Vale" up to the 1960s. Members of the Partington family farmed the area from the 1840s. In this photo, Elinor, Gary and Faye stand behind the plaque that explained the provenance of the displayed implements. Unfortunately, one of these items was stolen in December 2016.
