A photo of the official party at the planting of the Olive Tree of Peace in the Western Lawn of the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973. Although the back of the photo says "Planting of Lone Pine tree" it is believed that it is wrong and this photo belongs with the Olive Tree of Peace photos (see 00478 and 00479). 1973 was the Golden Jubilee year of Legacy. The names on the front of the photo mentions Sir Edmund Herring who was Lieutenant General of Victoria for 27 years, which is deputy to the Governor, so he was probably acting on behalf of the Governor at the ceremony. Herring was a renowned Australian senior officer in World War II. In September 1942 he became commander of New Guinea Force. He also served in World War I, earning the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. For the widows who are sight impaired a copy of the newsletter is audio described onto CD by Vision Australia and posted to them. It contains information about meetings and activities. A chart for taking measurements of the Legacy boys. This was a copy of the form that was kept as an example. The data was of measurements of junior legatee W. Gallagher. The form was signed J. Teirney, which was Jim Teirney who was the first paid employee of Melbourne Legacy, he was the fitness instructor for many years. The date was 1927 so very early in the history of Legacy working with children of deceased servicemen. Roy Kyle (1916), fought in the battle of Lone Pine. One of the last to leave Gallipoli, Roy Kyle served in Egypt and later and the Somme where he was wounded in the head, arms and back. The VATC had a range of displays and activities including a breathtaking parachute demonstration by the Blue Eagles. It was touch and go for a while due to the weather conditions but once the Blue Eagles jumped they all reached their designated target in front of the winning post. Legacy even had a special race named after it: “The Legacy Widows Appeal Handicap”. Our thanks to the VATC for this courtesy. Hope we had a few winners! A newspaper article written by Stan Savige, a first hand account of the evacuation of Gallipoli. At that time Stan Savige was a second lieutenant and was one of the last three officers to leave the Lone Pine sector on the morning of the 20 December 1915. It was the second part of his account that was published. This campaign medal (the Victory Medal) was issued to all those who received the 1914 or 1915 Star and to most of those who received the British war medal. Recipientss had to be mobilised in any service between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. This one belonged to James Pullar Cameron 8 Light Horse Regiment AIF. He was killed in action at Lone pine.James Pullar Cameron was the son of Robert Cameron one of the earliest settlers on the Orbost flats. He was a trooper in the 8 Light Horse Regiment and died at Gallipoli on 7 August 1915.A circular bronze medal. One side shows the winged figure of Victory with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand. On the other side are the words "THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919" surrounded by a laurel wreath. There is a circular attachment. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. Ernest Butcher served as No 56 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during the August 1915 offensive at Gallipoli. He is buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery Gallipoli. The death medallion was mounted on a wooden panel by his nephew Arthur Butcher and presented to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles on Anzac Day 1977. The 8th Light Horse suffered crippling casualties in the August offensive at Gallipoli. Clive enlisted in August 1914 in the Public Schools Company of the 5th Battalion. He was killed in the Landing at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 and is commemorated at the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli. He was 26. To honour his memory, the Clive Wellington Were Cricket Trophy for 'the boy who plays the game' was presented to Mentone Grammar in 1936, by his sister, Jessie, wife of Headmaster, Charles Campbell Thorold. These medallions were issued after the First World war to the next-of-kin of all British and Commonwealth(Empire) service personnel who were killed as a result of the war. The plaques were made of bronze aand hence popularly known as the "Dead Man's Penny". James Pullar Cameron was killed at Lone Pine during WW1. James Pullar Cameron (Service No 605) enlisted in the 8th Light Horse at Orbost on September 11, 1914 aged 23 years 5 months. His medical was done by Dr James Kerr. He was 6 ft 1 in tall, 11 st 6 lbs, of dark complexion with dark eyes and hair and a chest measurement of 34 ½ / 38 inches. After training, he embarked the Armadale on February 12, 1915. He was shot in the chest at the Dardanelles on May 29, 1915 and taken aboard the HT Neuralia for transfer to Malta. He was admitted to the military hospital ‘Cootenara’ and after 10 days treatment, he re-embarked for Gallipoli aboard the HMT Southland on June 14, 1915. He returned to duty at Gallipoli on June 20, 1915. On August 7, 1915 he was killed in action. His body was not recovered. His name is on the memorial at Lone Pine. His memorial plaque has a wide H and a number behind the back paw of the lion, indicating that this plaque was made at the Acton Factory, one of the later ones cast there.James Pullar Cameron was the son of Robert Cameron one of the earliest settlers on the Orbost flats.
