The first site to be sold in Ballarat, where in 1853 Thomas Bath erected a timber building for use as a hotel. Parts of the present hotel date from 1862, when Walter Craig was owner. The hotel is associated with many historic figures, and no other hotel in Victoria has such an interesting succession of buildings and additions. This image shows the 1906 Keel House conservatory. It was designed and fabricated in England, then re-assembled in the Ballarat Gardens. It was purely for display, only allowing public viewing through glass windows at either end. It became known as the Keel House because the roofline resembled a boat hull, but this roof profile was specifically designed to ensure that snow would be shed from the roof. Lara RUSSELL Lara Russell was a student of Graphic Design and Multimedia at the University of Ballarat Arts Academy when she undertook this work. The work won the 2013 Lucato Peace Prize. Established at Federation University Australia in 2004, the Lucato Peace Prize is offered annually with the generous support of Mr George Lucato. The Prize is an annual acquisitive award, open to all enrolled Federation University Australia students and senior secondary students enrolled at a City of Ballarat secondary school or college. The winner of the Lucato Peace Prize is decided annually by a formal judging panel and is awarded to the student whose work best illustrates or expresses 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. This artwork comprises 12 postcards each with an individual word in a gold box. Artist's Statement: The collection of postcards creates a sentence that reflects on war being an opposition to life itself. This journal has been used by the Warrnambool doctor, Irving Buzzard to record his surgical operations and procedures from 1931 to 1944. Dr Irving Buzzard (1897-1981) was one of Warrnambool's best-known doctors, especially in the field of gynaecology and obstetrics. He came to Warrnambool in 1929 with his practice at Cambourne in Raglan Parade. He left Warrnambool in 1964. Whilst in Warrnambool he was active in medical associations and local community affairs. The Irving Buzzard Midwifery prize is awarded annually by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (Victorian branch).This journal is of considerable significance as it gives an insight into the work of a general medical practitioner in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century (For instance, the journal records that in 1931 Dr Buzzard carried out 38 major operations and 132 minor procedures.)This is a ledger of 193 pages with a hardboard black cover and the remains of brown leather binding on the spine and cover corners. The Tallangatta Troop, 8th Light horse Regiment won the Hutton Trophy in 1938.The 8th Light Horse (Indi) Regiment superseded the 16th Light Horse in 1919. It had its headquarters at Benalla with sub-units throughout the Upper Murray and Northeast Victoria. In December 1941,the regiment converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 8th Reconnaissance Battalion then in July 1942 it became 8th Cavalry Regiment and served in Northern Territory. As Japanese threat to the mainland declined the regiment was disbanded. The Hutton Trophy or Shield was awarded annually to the best Light Horse Troop in Ausralia. Dick Richards has been honoured through the naming of a Ballarat School of Mines prize - The R.W. Richards Medal. This medal later became a University of Ballarat prize. It has been awarded annually since 1959 to the Bachelor of Applied Science graduate considered to have achieved the most outstanding academic performance of their course. The award was was introduced to commemorate the long years of service to tertiary education in Ballarat by Mr Richards. Dick Richards joined the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) in 1914, and soon afterwards was granted leave to join an expedition to Antarctica. In 1915 he sailed from Australia with the Antarctic Exploration Expedition, led by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Card to record contributions to the J. L. Williams Memorial Scholarship fund. The fund was established in the memory of Jack Williams, who was a teacher at the St Kilda School on Brighton Road for 24 years. Contributions were sought towards raising about 350 pounds to establish a perpetual scholarship awarded annually to a pupil of the school. Jack Williams is also remembered through the J. L. Williams Medal, first issued in 1931 by the Australian State/Secondary Schools' National Football Council (now awarded by School Sport Australia), in recognition of his efforts to establish what is now known as the School Sport Australia Championship. This trophy awarded annually for best troop was presented by former Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Alan Cunningham. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. This photo shows Charles Henry “Mick” Morris in the Morris cellar at Mia Mia near Rutherglen, Victoria. Charles Henry “Mick” Morris was born in Rutherglen, Victoria on 1st July 1928, son of Charles Tempest George Morris and Daisy Chambers. The Morris winery was started by Mick’s great grandfather, George Francis Morris who arrived in Australia in 1852. He immediately set off for the goldfields but found more profit from selling supplies to the goldfields. He purchased land in Rutherglen in 1859. By 1894 he had the biggest cellars in Australia. Mick Morris is a 4th generation wine maker. He was educated at Gooramadda Primary School, then at Rutherglen Higher Elementary School before attending Scotch College in Melbourne. He became the first member of his family to gain a university education, gaining a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Melbourne in 1950 before completing an Oenology Course at Roseworthy Agricultural College in South Australia. Mick returned to Mia Mia in 1952 where his first role was working in the vineyard. By the end of 1953 he had become the “semi-official” winemaker at Mia Mia. From that time his career as a widely recognised winemaker went from strength to strength, winning many prestigious awards. Mick is recognised as a pioneer of the Durif grape variety. In 1993 Mick’s son, David became a 5th generation winemaker. Morris is famous for producing some of the world’s finest fortified wines. Away from the wine industry Mick has a strong interest in sport, particularly football. Since 1933, the Morris Medal for the Best and Fairest Player in the Ovens and Murray League has been awarded annually. This award was instigated by Charles Hughes Morris, Mick’s grandfather. Mick also played in the league. Morris Wines of Rutherglen were purchased by Casella Family Brands in 2016. This image depicts a renowned winemaker of Rutherglen who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the Australian wine industry. This set of books was given to Cornelius (Con) O’Mahony in 1883 when he won the Bowen Prize Essay Competition awarded by the University of Melbourne. The Bowen Prize was established in 1874 by the Governor of Victoria, Sir George Bowen. This was then awarded annually to the person who was a student or ex-student of the University of Melbourne who wrote the best essay on matters relating to British and British Empire history or literature. Con O’Mahony’s essay was on the Federation of the Australian Colonies. Con O’Mahony, born in Bendigo, studied at Melbourne University in the early 1880s. He was a lawyer in Kepler Street, Warrnambool from the late 1880s to his death in 1920, firstly in partnership with E. Klingender and later operating under the name of O’Mahony and Murray. These books are most important because: 1. They are a very attractive set of books with considerable antiquarian value. 2. They were given as the prize for winning the 1883 Bowen Prize at Melbourne University – a prestigious award still today. 3. They were given for a prize-winning essay on the advantages of Federation in Australia. The essay was written 17 years before Federation and so they forms an interesting part of the Australia-wide campaign for Federation. 4. The prize books were awarded to Con O’Mahony who played his part in Warrnambool’s late 19th century and early 20th century history as a prominent lawyer in the town for over 30 years.These ten volumes of books have hard covers in a dark red colour with a gold leather spine and leather reinforcements on the edges of the front and back covers. The front cover has an embossed gold emblem of the University of Melbourne and the spine has ornamental gold, black and red patterning and gold lettering. The insides of the cover have blue, red and orange mottled patterning and this is repeated on the edging of the pages. There are approximately 400 pages in each volume. A typed page on the Bowen Prize is inserted in the front of the first volume and the inscription on every volume is handwritten in black ink. The covers are a little scuffed and slightly torn in some volumes. Cyril Hayward came with his wife Joyce to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years he and his wife were dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Cyril Hayward was a leading figure in the Warrnambool Theatre Company as an actor, stage manager, electrician, technician and the person who did any other job that needed to be done. He was a Life Member of the Theatre Company and President of the Warrnambool branch of the Victorian Arts Council, organizer of the weekly talking newspaper for the visually impaired, a tutor for the local Adult Literacy Scheme, a founding member of the Warrnambool Probus Club and was on the building committee for the development and building of the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. The 'Collaboration of Commonality and Difference' has its conceptual roots in teh notion that only when we accept and nurture both commonality and difference, can we, humankind, foster unity. With the acceptance and nurturing of commanality and difference, peoples of the world are afforded equal validity for a collaborative approach towards peaceful resolution and possible unity. Integral to the conceptual foundation of the work is the use of papers sourced from around the world. Paper is at once universal and individual, and in this instance is representative of humanking. The jigsaw design draws on the understanding that each piece is integral to the creation and resolution of the whole. Commanality is suggested through repetition, however, no two pieces are the samem emphasizinf the beautym strength and validity of difference. Established in 2004, generously supported by George Lucato, the Lucato Peace Prize was an annual acquisitive art award open to all enrolled Federation University Australia tertiary students and all senior secondary students enrolled at any City of Ballarat secondary school or college. Prizes were awarded to the applicants whose work best illustrates or expresses the idea that 'peaceful alternatives are always preferable to armed confrontations'. First prize of $2250.00 was awarded to Cassandra McArthur for her work, Commonality and Difference, 2014, and it was the last Lucato Peace Prize Awarded after the death of George Lucato in 2014. This is a medallion awarded in 2000 by Powercor Warrnambool to Elmac Hydroponics. Powercor Australia, founded in 1994, is an electrical distribution company operating in the Western District of Victoria and the western suburbs of Melbourne. Powercor Warrnambool, like other Powercor organizations, is involved in giving Business Excellence Awards annually to businesses in its area of supply. In 2014 there were 15 awards for Business Excellence. Elmac Hydroponics was a business growing and supplying organically-produced tomatoes from 1997 to 2004. It was situated at Mount Pleasant, Princes Highway, Allansford, Victoria. The business was operated by Graeme and Barbara McLeod and Keith and Leonie Ellerton. Hydroponics is a system of growing plants without soil, using a nutrient solution. Elmac Hydroponics had a 2,000 square metre greenhouse with 10,000 growing points. This is a significant medallion, showing the award given to a small business in the Warrnambool area and indicating its achievements in the environmental area. Elmac was an industry leader in in implementing an ‘Autopot’ hydroponic system which is aimed at reducing nutrient and waste water to zero. Elmac was also a finalist in the Ericsson 2002 Innovation Awards.This is a gilt metal medallion, oval-shaped, with an ornamental edging and a shield-shaped design on one side and a circular design on the other. The top has two metal rings for attachment to a chain or wall hook. Takeo Iwahashi was the founder of the Nippon Lighhouse for the Blind in Japan. He made an enormous contribution to the lives and progress of blind people around the world, and was a great friend of Helen Keller. The annual Takeo Iwahashi Award was founded in his memory and is awarded to a "worker for the blind whose contribution to work for the blind in the fields of education, training, rehabilitation, placement, prevention and cure of blindness, administration of services for the welfare of the blind or any other program related to the welfare of the blind has been outstanding." Hugh Jeffrey won this award in 1988. This intricate and delicate presentation envelope is made from a heavy guage paper/fabric blend. It features a small addition of origami on the front, as well as Japanese calligraphy and a gold and silver knotted ribbon holding it closed. As an incentive to improve school work and develop student leadership, from 1927 former Clarendon PLC student Nellie Sutherland (Coulter) donated a silver cup each year. The cup soon became a prestigious award. It was awarded to the girl holding the leading place in 'work, sport and above all moral character'. The cups were awarded annually until to 1951. Mrs Sutherland made these gifts partly to remember her school days under Mrs Kennedy and because the school in Mair Street was built on the site of her former home. But the main reason was in memory of her two brothers Jason and Les killed during World War 1. In 2001 the Junior School Parent Group funded the ongoing award for a Year 6 student. The award criteria in 2001 were 'general excellence in academic achievement, respect for and from others, a positive role model, involvement and initiative'. Beverley donated her Coulter Cup back to the school archive 'in appreciation of the wonderful experience I had a school' (CPLC reunion, April 2017). The Hutton Trophy or Shield was awarded annually to the best Light Horse Troop in Australia. The trophy is now held at the Armoured Centre Puckapunyal. Inter-regimental competition was strong in the years between WWI and WWII. Plaque commemorating the awarding of the Takeo Iwahashi Prize to Hugh Jeffrey in 1988. Takeo Iwahashi was the founder of the Nippon Lighhouse for the Blind in Japan.
