Eltham Shire Councillor Albert Price joined over 500 spectators for the official opening of the new re-inforced concrete bridge across the Diamond Creek at Hurstbridge. In the 1930s it was converted for vehicular traffic. The first Tawonga bridge was built in 1884. It was destroyed by floods in 1916. The new bridge was constructed in 1923 and destroyed in 1953. The present concrete bridge was constructed in 1986 and named Ryders Bridge. Newspaper clipping documents deputations to the Minister of Public Works for grants to be made available for repairs to bridges and roads damaged by heavy flooding in 1933, in particular, the replacement of a stone and concrete bridge over the Leigh River at Garibaldi in the Buninyong Shire. The concrete slabs were still in the water in the 1960s/70s or even later. This spike came from the old Brodribb River bridge which is about 9.6 kilometres from Orbost. The Brodribb River joins the Snowy River north of Marlo. In 1906, a bridge replaced the punt over the Brodribb River, improving communication with Orbost. The area of Hurstbridge was originally known as Hurst’s-bridge after the timber bridge built over the Diamond Creek near Hurst’s station in late 1881/early 1882. Greens Creek Bridge on the Wimmera River built in 1929 by C.R.B. and now demolished. The replacement bridge was designed to cope with the floods and the approaches to the new bridge were built up.
