Printed colour postcard titled "City Hall and Shoppers Square Ballarat". Has an inbound tram showing the Grenville St sign on the rear, and one of the crossbench cars loading passengers outside the Town Hall. Shows Snows building, people in the median strip - busy holiday or a Sunday. Images of the front and back of the card and a close-up of the two trams in the bottom left-hand corner. Note the lamp or coloured destination sign on the roof of the inbound tram. On the rear, the postcard has been divided into two with the words "Post Card" and "Printed in Great Britain" on the top, a "Valentine Series" on the side. Set of A4 photocopies of 15 years of annual reports of The Electric Supply Company of Victoria Limited from 1920 to 1934. Most of the reports comprise three sheets - Directors Report, left hand side of the Balance Sheet, Trading Account and Profit and Loss Account on the right hand side. Some reports have a statutory declaration by the Manager and Secretary that the reports submitted are a true copy of the report. Items .1 to .12 detail the number of lamps connected, passengers carried and trading account for the last three years. This practice stopped when ESCo sold the company to the SEC but continued to manage it for a further four years. The Directors report from 9/1900 note the forthcoming sale of the company to the British Insulated Wire Company Limited and the problems of finalising the sale. This is an early photograph of St. Mary's Anglican Church in Sunbury. On 13th October 1863, the Government granted one acre of land on the corner of Stawell and O'Shanassy Streets for the building of a church. he first service was held on 24th November 1867. After that date subsequent additions were made. The gas lamp outside the church indicates that the photograph was taken before electric power was installed in Sunbury. Hecla produced a wide range of appliances for domestic use, beginning with heaters and later branching out to a wider range of kitchen appliances Hecla was established by Clarence William Marriott, a young Melbourne metal worker. He began manufacturing Australia's first carbon filament electric radiators in 1899. He originally worked for his father James Marriott who commenced business in Melbourne as an art metal worker in 1872 and was, in 1907, appointed as the official art metal worker to the Victorian Government producing items including the ornate iron gates and gas lamp standards outside Melbourne's Parliament House. With the invention of nickel chromium wire after 1900, C.W. Marriott began making more efficient heating elements using this new material in 1916. After being influenced by the eruption of Mount Hekla in Iceland, on 19 December 1918, Clarence registered the brand name "HECLA" with an erupting volcano as its logo. The company Hecla Electrics Pty Ltd was officially registered in 1922. In 1928 the company adopted the advertising slogan, 'By Hecla, it's Good'. The Hecla range rapidly expanded to include electric heaters and radiators, electric foot warmers, electric kettles, ceramic & metal electric jugs, immersion hot water elements, electric fans, electric coffee percolators, electric toasters, electric grillers and stoves, electric irons and electric frypans, clocks and curling wands. Electric blankets were introduced shortly after WWII.In 1930, a controlling interest in Hecla Electrics Pty Ltd was acquired by General Electric Corporation. Clarence William Marriott died in June 1967 in Melbourne, Victoria.This item is representative of a common domestic appliance used throughout Australia. It was manufactured by a pioneering Australian company.A small chrome steel toaster manufactured by Hecla Australia. It has a door on either side which flips down to insert or remove a slice of bread on each side, Each door has two black Bakelite knobs. The electric element is placed down the centre of the cavity. The Panther lamp was made by Powell and Hanmer of Birmingham. (see Item 7354) This model appears to be dated from the 1920's. Early models of the automobile, motorbike and bicycles used carbide lamps as headlamps. Acetylene gas, derived from carbide, enabled early automobiles to drive safely at night. Thick concave mirrors combined with magnifying lenses projected the acetylene flame light. These type of lights were used until reliable batteries and dynamos became available, and manufacturers switched to electric lights.Carbide Vehicle Lamp.-Silvered Metal, Lens Assembly . Photograph of one of the three Victorian Railways "Luxury" cars that were sold to the MMTB following the closure of the final section of the St Kilda - Brighton tramway on 28-2-1959. The tramcar has been placed on No. 15 trucks to enable movement around the workshops. Two of the trams, No. 52 and 53 were modified with longer running boards, full driver's bulkheads to replace the blackout blinds, route number boxes, removal of the red oil lamps above the headlight, conversion to from Broad gauge (5'3") to standard gauge, changes to destination boxes, seating and many other changes.
