Sonotone 700 Hearing Aid, Sonotone, 1946
Although Lee DeForest invented the triode vacuum in 1906, it was not employed in hearing aids until 1921. The first hearing aid using a vacuum tube was purported to have been made by Earl C. Hanson. He called his hearing aid the Vactuphone. It used one small peanut tube (below right) to amplify the output of a carbon hearing aid. The Globe Hearing Aid Company and Western Electric collaborated to manufacture the Vactuphone. By the early 1940s, Raytheon had developed miniature vacuum tubes. It was these miniature vacuum tubes that made body-worn hearing aids a reality. Unfortunately, the power requirements of these aids made it necessary to use two relatively large batteries—an "A" battery to power the filaments of the vacuum tubes and a "B" battery to supply the high-voltage for the plate current. The batteries were worn external to the hearing aid itself and the name "Two-piece" hearing aid was used to describe them. Until about 1945 "Two-piece" hearing aids were the norm. However, improved vacuum tube design reduced current requirements. As a result, battery manufacturers were able to reduce the size of the batteries used in hearing aids. At the same time, electronic components were also being miniaturized. This allowed the hearing aid manufacturers to design hearing aids with internal batteries. After 1945, these "One-piece" hearing aids quickly replaced the more cumbersome "Two-piece" hearing aids. With continuing improvements in both batteries and components, hearing aids continued to reduce in size until 1953 when the vacuum tube was suddenly supplanted by the transistor.Fawn plastic hearing aid with metal clip on back and wires leading from the bottom. Photocopy of a drawing prepared by Dave Macartney in the mid 1980's of the track layout of the Electric Supply Co. of Victoria's Ballarat Tramway system, excluding the single track to Sebastopol. Plan shows the location of the loops, loop type, street names, position of replacement loops installed by the SEC during the reconstruction, depot layout, powerhouse siding and railway in Lydiard St. North. Prepared from inspecting the Plans of Ballarat services drawings in the Ballarat Water Board's Offices. Drawn on the back of old import forms of a light weight paper and has shown through the printing underneath. Letter - Electricity comes to Wodonga - 1912 letter to Mrs Beardmore
Mrs Jessie Beardmore, wife of the Shire President, Mr Henry Beardmore, was invited to switch on the electrical current at the power house in Wodonga on 15th January 1912. This was not the official opening of the newly installed system which took place a few weeks later. Disagreement existed amongst Shire Councillors about the official opening, several of them including Mr Beardmore believing the opening should only take place when the scheme was completed. However Dr Schlink, Mr D. M. Stavely, Cr Twomey and Mr C. Holloway, Engineer for the Electric Lighting Company, arranged a small ceremony to turn lights on for the first section of the scheme. This included street lighting along Sydney Street between South Street and the Shire Hall as well as a few business houses and private establishments, with the balcony of the Terminus Hotel illuminated by over 100 lights. Other areas and buildings were connected over the following weeks. Mr Beardmore was not present at the beginning of proceedings but joined the crowd in the street. During a small number of speeches, credit for his work to instigate and further the introduction of electricity to Wodonga was given to Councillor Twomey, referred to as “the father of the scheme”. This item is significant because it records the first connection of electricity to Wodonga in 1912.A hand written letter addressed to Mrs Beardmore of Wodonga. Note: At the time of cataloguing very little found on Mr. W. Sawyer - see reference in Trove for meeting with Sir John Monash - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3737172/446386 and International Electrical Engineers - http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=5217646, that he died 1/3/1966, age 93 - had been associated with Electric Street Railway companies, the Railway Engineering Department of General Electric and the firm Ford Bacon and Davis in New York City. Legislative Assembly of Victoria report dated 21/11/1922 looking at the provision of the SEC Bill, country areas power supply and the purchase of the North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Company's (NMETL) Works and undertakings. Gives costs of the purchase of the undertaking the Company and issues with Councils particularly the City of Melbourne who were running a rival power supply and the City of Essendon who it seems lost out on the whole deal. Demonstrates and yields information about the ESCo tickets of 1906, shows the variety of tickets and passes used.Framed - wooden surround, glass, set of 26 actual tickets and two sketches of passes, timber backing board with the title "Ballarat Tramways - Sample tickets", dated 1906. Sets out the various tickets used by ESCo at the time and most likely used as a training aid for new conductors on both the electric and horse trams. Not to be displayed in light or hung up, that is display with care as fading is likely. Photograph - Black and White - cable tram lighting battery workers
Photograph shows a group of five cable tramway employees with a cart containing batteries to supply power for lights in Melbourne Cable trams. This lighting was introduced by the Tramway Board (TB), the forerunner to the MMTB during 1917. A motor generator at each car house or depot provided the power to charge the batteries which were then placed in each tram for the day. Reference - The Commonwealth Engineer 1/8/1917 - Reg Item 2568. The equipment was provided by the General Electric Company. The cart has the letters "TB CH" possibly indicating Clifton Hill Depot and the batteries are lettered "NE" and then given a number. Photo date unknown - 1917 to 1940. This photograph is Public Records Office photo H84 in the Victorian Railways collection.Yields information about the type of batteries used to provide lighting power to cable trams and the workers involved and their clothing. Photograph shows Geelong power station after completion. Power house building on the SW corner of Corio Tce. and Yarra Sts, Geelong, with new furnace room on the left, turret removed from the corner of the building, a third floor added on the Corio Tce. side but offices and concreted company name above where the trams entered the depot from the street not yet built. Date between 1924 and 1928 (based on photograph of Pengelly tramcar arriving and recently received, secondhand Melbourne tramcar). Stages in the construction of one of the two Birney Safety Cars, imported from the J G Brill Company of Philadelphia in kit form in 1924, and assembled in the area formerly occupied by the buses. In the background of Item 9237 is the trailer purchased from the North Melbourne Electric Tramway Company in 1924. Its number in the order in which Geelong cars were acquired was 13 (the Birneys were nos. 14 and 15) and it was eventually converted to a track scrubber car in 1926. It never carried the number 13 but was advertised for sale as such at the closure of the tramways in 1956. Location of the entrance is in Yarra St, immediately south of the Corio Tce. intersection, and better shown in plate 9201. Motor registration is 4590, probably 1910.
