The milk shaker machine was used in milk bars during the 1940's and 1950's often using fresh milk from the local diaries. Modern machines are more compact with a variety of different settings and the ability to blend a variety of food including fruit and vegetables as well as liquids.Vera Drummond worked in the Tawonga Milk Bar where she used the Milk Shaker machine. The premises were leased out until it finally closed. The Milk Shaker machine was then lent to the Tawonga cafe which was situated opposite the Tawonga Hotel on the Kiewa Valley Highway near Mountain Creek Road. When the cafe owner bought their own milk shaker machine the original was returned to Vera who lived at the Tawonga Post Office. The milk shakes were made with fresh real milk direct from the diary and enjoyed by Vera's grandchildren and great grandchildren especially on summer holidays.This set consists of: 1 stainless steel milkshake blender with black electric cord attached; 3 moulded glasses with vertical grooves; 4 aluminium mixing beakers also with vertical grooves; 3 long handle stainless steel mixing spoons; 1 stainless steel swivel stick. The blender is heavy with an enclosed cylinder at the top containing the motor with a rotating mixer hanging below it. This is supported by a long vertical enclosed cylinder attached to a base where the electric cord is placed. Lloyd butchers were located on the corner of Elgar & Whitehorse Roads (within the Surrey Hills postal district). From 1920-1950 Edward Lloyd also had a store at 112 Union Road, Surrey Hills. This is a pocket spring balance. It would have been used last century in our district by market gardeners, hawkers and other itinerant workers and possibly also used in some small businesses. In households it could also be useful for weighing jam fruit, vegetables etc. Spring balances are still in use today.This item is retained as an example of a spring balance manufactured 80 or more years ago.This is a set of spring balance scales. The spring is fixed at one end with a hook attached to hold an object to be weighed. The top end has a ring to hang the scales up. The spring mechanism is enclosed by a steel cover. The front scale face is made of brass and both this face and the rear spring casing are fastened by three rivets. On the front is a spring-loaded blade which has equally spaced scale markings next to it on one side. Lister's petrol station at the corner of Main Road and Bridge streets. The petrol station replaced Levy's Vegetable and Fruit Market circa 1940s. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. When Mrs Strange died some years ago, her extensive slide collection was sorted through and those relevant to Ballarat were gifted to the Ballarat Library.

This is an early model of a hand-held juice extractor. It is a household item that is probably over 100 years old.This juice extractor has no known local provenance but it is an interesting item and useful for display. This juice extractor has a brass ring with a handle. Sitting in the ring is a heavy glass container with a concave base and a ridge inner base moulded in a shape to fit a whole or a half of a lemon or orange or other fruit or vegetable. The rim of the glass has two pieces broken off. Attached to the brass base is a metal scoop-shaped dish with a handle. The handle pushes up and down into the glass container to put pressure on the object in the glass container to extract the juice. Frank Leslie Barkla was a keen amateur photographer and member of the Melbourne Camera Club. Delivery cart of Mr & Mrs W J Atkinson’s greengrocery business and general store near the corner of Whitehorse and Elgar Roads, c 1930. Emma Uebergang and William James Atkinson married in 1930. They ran a mixed business in Whitehorse Road from 1926-1952. Stock included fruit and vegetables, sweets and some groceries. With Mr Atkinson is Albert Cunnington who in about 1930 helped with deliveries. To the left can be seen Whitehorse Road as it approaches the shopping centre and over the back of the horse can be seen the White Horse Hotel. The Moulin Legumes No. 3 food mill is a useful manual kitchen utensil for milling, sieving, grating and pureeing various food types (legumes, vegetables, fruit and herbs). The food is placed in the chamber and the handle is turned to push the food through the holes in the blades and into a bowl placed below it. The various blades allow choice of consistency as they have different sized holes. It was in use before electric food processors were invented and is still used in modern times. The vegetable mill was invented by the French inventor and industrialist, Jean Mantelet, in 1932. Inspired by his wife, he invented the mill, which simply and quickly made cooked food into puree or mash. He said "My greatest pride is to rid women of a daily chore." The business started using the brand Moulinex in 1956 and today is it a household name linked to useful and good quality kitchen utensils and aids. The name comes from combining the words Moulin Express, which was an electric coffee mill. The embossed text "BREVETE S G D G" was a type of French patent without a government guarantee. It stopped being used in 1968. This Moulin is an example of a kitchen utensil used before electric food processors were invented, and had gained popularity to process foods such as vegetable's, fruit, nuts and herbs in a domestic or commercial kitchen. The first model of the Moulin Legunes was invented in 1932 by French industrialist Jean Mantelet to meet the reduce labour for housewives in the kitchen. Sandra Pullman visited the Melbourne City Council Exhibition, 'Melbourne Parks and Gardens Through the Magic Lantern' in November 2012. Lex Nieboer, former Burnley student graduating in 1975, found a large number of glass lantern slides in a store room and took them home as he was concerned they would be thrown out. His family has a long tradition of being involved in photography, so he understood the value of the slides. He donated the ones that were of Melbourne City Parks and Gardens to the Council and they used them in their exhibition. Sandra contacted Lex and arranged with Jane Wilson (Archivist) to visit Lex on 12 April, 2013 at Wilson Botanic Park, Berwick where he works. After Lex showed them the slides, he, very generously, donated approximately 300 slides back to the Burnley Archives. There was already a collection of almost 100 glass slides in the Archives. They were in a wooden box containing glass lantern slides with label on outside, "Slides of Horticultural Objects and Views." Inside lid is handwritten, "Mr Bailey Botanic Gardens Adelaide." (John Frederick Bailey, Director Adelaide Botanic Gardens 1917-1932.) and, "Mr Isaac 9 pla? 2 ficifolia." (Probably Mr Isaacs Mayor of Adelaide 1917.) Also, "Purchased from Estate of Reeves Late Malvern Gardens, AWJ." (F.L. Reeves, Malvern Council's Park Curator in the 1920's died in 1933. AWJ, A.W. Jessep, Principal Burnley Horticultural College 1926-1941.) These were numbers 61-85 "History of the Rose." Geoff Olive, former Staff member, remembered taking a number of glass slides to a photographic processor to have 35mm slides made from them. 60 of these are also in this collection. The Friendly Societies Carnival at Mentone 1916 during WW1 was arranged to showcase the local activities and raise funds for the 'Discharged Wounded Soldiers Fund' = £140 was raised. As elsewhere in Australia most of the local young men had enlisted in the AIF and some were coming home wounded - many were killed on overseas battlefields. This Parade was led by the Cheltenham Brass Band, followed by the Friendly Societies AOF, IOR, HACBS, PAFS, and ANA. The PAFS - Protestant Alliance Friendly Society - had 2 entries 'Fruit & Vegetable Display' and 'The Murder of Nurse Edith Cavell' both floats won their category. Ella Allnutt portrayed Nurse Cavell. The Carnival gave prizes for sports events on the Mentone Oval and a concert was held at night at the Mentone Ice Skating Rink. Lavers Hill General Store, or more usually, Hampshire's Store, was owned initially for two years by Hampshire and Hutley, and then for 17 years by Mr and Mrs P. Hampshire (senior) who serviced the area including during the Depression. On their retirement their son, Percy, went into partnership with Leo Brauer for four years, and then ran it with his wife, Nea, for a further eight years until the store burnt down. The Store was a placed where the community congregated. It was a place where people met or waited for the train or the Cream Bus or the Mail Bus. Inside it was a place where you could buy groceries, fruit and vegetables, footwear, petrol, and so on. It was a place where children could buy a big stick of licorice for a halfpenny or 3d. worth of broken biscuits. Blackwood Gully Tea Rooms now stands in its place. B/W. Circa late 1800s. Wooden domestic butter-churn. This is a paddle churn, a barrel that contains a paddle, which is operated by a handle. The paddle churned the butter inside the container when the handle was turned. Early settlers had to be self sufficient, growing their own vegetables, making tools and clothing and usually had a house cow to produce their milk supply. An unsigned note states it was used by a Chinese market-gardener’s family. From the mid 1800s into the1900s, there were numbers of Chinese market gardeners working in Bentleigh, Moorabbin, Mc Kinnon, and Cheltenham in the Shire of Moorabbin. After the sale of land following 'Dendy's Special Survey' 1841 many Chinese settlers rented allotments and established market gardens in the area and sold their produce to the increasing population of Melbourne at the markets in St Kilda and Melbourne.Circa late 1800s. The invention of the Coolgardie Safe is credited to Arthur Patrick McCormick, a contractor in Coolgardie, and later the Mayor of Narrogin. Coolgardie is in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia. Gold was first discovered there in 1892; the townsite became a municipality in 1894, and by 1898 its population of 15,000 made it the third largest town in Western Australia after Perth and Fremantle. In the last decade of the 19th century, Coolgardie was the capital of the West Australian goldfields. Being 180 kilometres from the nearest civilisation, food supplies were initially scarce and expensive. As fresh food was a valuable commodity there was incentive to preserve it, and keep it out of reach of scavengers such as birds, dingos, dogs, ants, and flies. It was in an effort to do this, in the extreme heat of the Australian Interior, that McCormick came up with his design for the Coolgardie Safe. McCormick noticed that a wet bag placed over a bottle cooled its contents. He further noted that if this bottle was placed in a breeze, the bag would dry out more quickly, but the bottle would get colder. What McCormick had discovered was the principle of evaporation: ‘to change any liquid into a gaseous state requires energy. This energy is taken in the form of heat from its surroundings.’ Employing this principle, McCormick made a box for his provisions which he covered with a wet hessian bag. He then placed a tray on top, into which he poured water twice daily. He hung strips of flannel from the tray so that water would drip down onto the hessian bag, keeping it damp. As the water evaporated, the heat dissipated, keeping the food stored inside cool and fresh. The success of McCormick’s invention would not have worked without a steady supply of water. Fresh water was scarce in the eastern goldfields at this time but the demand for water from a steadily growing population encouraged innovation. The solution was to condense salt water. Heating salt water in tanks produced steam that was condensed in tall cylinders, cooled and then collected in catchment trays. By 1898 there were six companies supplying condensed water to the goldfields, the largest company producing 100,000 gallons of water a day. In the early 20th century, Coolgardie Safes were also manufactured commercially. These safes incorporated shelving and a door, had metal or wooden frames and hessian bodies. The feet of the safe were usually placed in a tray of water to keep ants away. This is the home of Ernest Augustus Young (1891-1985) and Ruby Nichell Whitby (1892-1984) and their son Ernest Lance Young. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills; after he married Beryl Mair. Electoral roll for 1937 gives the house name as 'Whitby Lodge'. Ernest and Ruby also had twins Clive and James who died in infancy. Buried at Box Hill Cemetery - M-*-0867 (family plot) This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. She remembers it as having pressed ceilings in some rooms and ornate fireplaces and tiles and leadlight windows in some rooms and doors with leadlight panels. Her grandfather was a keen gardener with an ornamental front garden and many vegetables and fruit trees in the back yard. Her grandfather sold the adjoining block (No 3 York Street), which had been used for growing flowers and vegetables, to John and Edna Jean. Reid. She also remembered that he extended the house and divided it into 2 flats, renting out the northern side for 20 years. The Buff-banded Rail is located on mainland Australia. It can also be found in south-east Asia, New Guinea and New Zealand. These birds are often seen individually or in pairs walking through the dense reeds and vegetations of wetlands or crops. This rail has a slow walk and often flicks its tail, which is raised, as they move. They are omnivore scavengers who feed on a large variety of invertebrates, fruit, seeds and vegetables. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum and the National Museum of Victoria, as well as individuals such amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is in a standing position on a wooden platform. The Buff-Branded Rail has a pale grey/yellow eyebrow over the black glass eyes and a pale yellow bill. It also has an orange and brown coloured band on its breast. This bird is multicoloured with streaks of chestnut brown, black, white and a faint orange-brown.
