Charles Plowright operated the Western Hotel on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets from 1910 until around 1919. It was built in 1869 by William O’Brien, having been designed by Andrew Kerr. It was a staging place for the Cobb & Co Coaches. A common commercial product with which many people could identify. Co-operative housing societies were loan societies established in the mid to late 20th century. They were based on the structure of a group of borrowers approximately 40, who lived within a radius of thirty miles joining a co-operative. They had the right to select their own site, plans and amount that they would like to spend. The co-operatives were administered by accounting firms. There were conditions placed on the borrowers in regard to amounts able to be borrowed and size of dwelling and percentage of cost which could be borrowed.The era of post-World War Two saw a shortage in a number of areas one of which was housing. The co-operative Housing scheme was preferred by many as it avoided the block approach which had been used by the Housing commission. Underwood and Underwood commenced manufacturing stereoscopes and cards in the 1880’s, and by 1900 they were selling 300,000 stereoscopes a year and producing 25,000 cards a day. A large volume of their photographic work survives to this day.A popular item which was in common use around 1900. The cards used, provide a useful view of people and places around that time. This is a passenger ticket for the Screw Steamship "Otway".It was built in 1872 at Glasgow for the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company. She traded to and from the Western Ports until 1878.when she was sold for the Melbourne West Australian trade. She was broken up at Sydney in 1924. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company commenced in 1868 and operated on the Western Ports run using the ships "Edina", "Rob Roy", "Otway", " Nelson" and "Julia Percy".In 1878 it became the Western Steam Navigation Company which operated until 1896. There is no information available on the passenger James Gilligan This item which may come from the old Warrnambool Museum is of considerable interest as a rare memento of steam travel to and from the Western Ports in the 19th century. This poster is a time table for the coaches operated by Armstrong and Fraser.Their stables were in Liebig Street, Warrnambool next to the Commercial Hotel (The Whalers Hotel today) Armstrong and Fraser commenced business in 1882 and were prominent in Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The kept as many as 70 horses in their stables and operated a daily timetable for tourists especially those going to the mouth of the Hopkins River and to the breakwater. This poster is of considerable interest as the time table indicates the extensive business of an early coach service in Warrnambool over 100 years ago. In 1869, the Warrnambool Meat Preserving Company commenced their business on the site, where it operated until 1875 when it was sold to the directors of the Warrnambool Woolen Mill Company. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. Directors listed for this period 1956 -1965 include Mr Fletcher Jones, E.E Ladner, N. K. Morris, C. J. McIntyre, J Bennett, J Dickson.. W. The United Warrnambool District of the Ancient Order of Foresters was formed around 1869. It was changed to the Court Warrnambool No. 4126 at a later date. The Ancient order of Foresters was established in Leeds in England in the mid 1700’s to provide financial and support to its members in times of illness, unemployment, disability and old age. They were particularly active in the lives of members around the time of both world wars and during the depression in the 1930’s. The entries in this journal contain the names of many early people of the area as well as detailed financial records of an early friendly society. This project started from the discovery of named photographs which were discovered behind an Honour Roll at the Koroit Primary School during renovations in 2009. These two volumes contain enlistments in the First World War, from the area of Koroit, Port Fairy, Macarthur, Penshurst and surrounding hamlets. It stretches from Codrington in the West through to Byaduk, Penshurst, Caramut in the north, and down though Woolsthorpe, Winslow and Dennington. It includes the personal family details, military records, photographs where possible, and fate of each soldier. Enlistments from the district numbered 250 men who paid the supreme sacrifice and 1100 who returned. It includes citations for bravery, excerpts from correspondence and local press.The significance and value of these two volumes lies in the fact that they bring together a large amount of information from various sources and link them effectively to the area of the Western district. They tell the stories of the many district soldiers of the first world war.Volume 1 Cover has collage of photographs of soldiers over coloured with different shades of green. The making of cordials and aerated waters was an important industry in Warrnambool from the time of the first settlement up to the 1980s. John Rowley was a prominent producer of aerated waters and cordials from 1868 to his death in 1893 (the Warrnambool Steam Aerated Works). He was known for his originality in the production of soft drinks and produced 20 varieties of drinks, including his own Henneberry Wine and Lime Fruit Champagne, both non-alcoholic. In the 1870s he was producing 600 dozen bottles a day and in the 1880s his cordial factory occupied half an acre of land and employed 13 people. He won many awards for his products at local Agricultural Shows. Warrnambool cordial bottles are of considerable significance as examples of an important industry now gone. Rowley is a significant person in the history of 19th century Warrnambool industries and Rowley bottles are of considerable importance, especially this one, made for efferverscent drinks. This is a heavy glass bottle (no stopper) possibly used for hop bitters or ginger wine or some contents that had high efferverscent qualities. The bottle has a heavy indented base. He sold to Ralph Reeves in 1930 and the business continued until the 1908s under the name of Reeves. Warrnambool cordial bottles are of considerable significance as examples of an important local industry now gone. This slate comes from the Glasgow Estate (Ellen Isabel Glasgow died in Warrnambool in 1971). It is presumed it was used by members of the Glasgow family. Slates such as this were used by all school children in Victoria (and presumably elsewhere) in the infant and younger age classes from the early days of the State until the early 1940s. It had the advantage of the work being able to be easily erased so that other work could be written. A slate pencil was used to write on this board.This is significant firstly as an example of past educational tools used by small children and so has important social significance as every school child of past generations would have used a slate. It is also important as it belonged to the Glasgow family. John Glasgow (c.1847-1925), at his property, Blackwood Hill, Wangoom, was a prominent cheese maker in the late 19th century and was one of the first shareholders and a member of the first Board of Directors of the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory at Allansford. Accordians came into being around the start of the 19th century and has become a well loved instrument. It is thought that they originated from areas in Austria and Germany but over the following century its popularity has spread to all parts of the world. Accordians come in various sizes but all operate on the same wind principle. Matthew Hohner began manufacturing mouth organs in 1857 in Germany and became quite popular over the ensuing years with production reaching over 1 million units in the 1880’s. Control of the business passed to his sons around 1900. By 1920 the company was producing 20 million harmonicas a year. They sold to both sides of the conflict during the first world war. Other musical instruments were made by the company in the 20th century. Ernst Hohner retired from the firm in 1965 after 45 years at the healm. Harmonicas and mouth organs were mass produced in the later part of the 19th and into the 20th century and as such are items with which many people can identify. It has social and cultural significance. The harmonica has chrome top and bottom with wooden section in middle. Robert Harper and Co. Ltd. was an Australian company involved with sugar refining and starch and oatmeal production. Silver Star Starch was a well-known product and starch was used extensively in most households, mainly for shirt collars, aprons, nurses’ uniforms, household linen, tablecloths, doyleys etc. This item is of some interest, both for display and as a good example of housekeeping methods of the past (up to about the 1970s). However, the starching of clothing does continue today, mainly for special purposes – theatre costumes, clerical and ceremonial garb etc. The item can be specifically used by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in any display connected to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition as this exhibition had, as one of its competitions, the Silver Star Starch Ironing Competition (see pages 96-7, book, ‘The Great Warrnambool Exhibition’, by E. O’Callaghan, Collett, Bain and Gaspars, 2002)A box that contained 12 ounces of Silver Star starch for domestic use, mainly for ironing clothes. The box, a product of Robert Harper and Company Limited, Victoria, Australia, has several advertising captions – ‘Won’t Stick to the Iron’, ‘The Best in the World’. ‘Requires no Boiling’, and has directions for use.
