A Carte de Visite (hereafter CdV) (also known as a calling card) was popular within the mid-19th Century. It is a small card with a photographic portrait mounted on it. These cards were exchanged during the Victorian era (peaking in the 1860s) between families and friends. This particular CdV was captured by James Bray in c.1870. Bray who worked as a professional photographer in Camp Street Beechworth from 1870-1891. He was one of four men who photographed the Kelly Gang after the siege in Glenrowan in 1880. He is also renowned for his previous work photographing members of the Kelly gang. Depicted in this photograph is Isaiah “Wild” Wright. Wright was born in approximately 1846 in County Monaghan, Ireland. At age 11, Wright arrived with his father John Wright, mother Margaret and younger siblings in Victoria on the 9th of July 1857. They sailed on the ship ‘Carleton’ which left from Liverpool in England. Wright was stood 5 foot 11 inches tall and had brown hair with hazel eyes. He had a scar on the inside corner of his left eyebrow, a large scar on his right cheek and a scar on the back of his head. Over the years in Australia, Wright was sentenced on numerous (particularly of horse theft) charges and spent time in Pentridge, Hulk Sacramento and Hulk Sandridge. Wright married Bridget Lloyd in 1973. Through this marriage he was connected to the Kelly family as Bridget’s mother was one of Ellen Kelly’s (Ellen was the mother of Edward “Ned” Kelly) sisters. Wright is famous for his participation in the horse stealing incident of 1871 and subsequent bare knuckle fight against Ned Kelly that occurred in 1874. In 1878, Bridget and Isaiah Wright became parents to John "Jack" Thomas Wright. Jack Wright was an Australian rules footballer who played for Geelong in the Victorian Football League 1902-1906. Wright passed away on the 29th of May 1911.This photograph is part of the Burke Museum "Kelly album" which includes a significant collection of photographs and artefacts connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Ned Kelly and his gang have become ingrained in Australian popular culture and thus many museums, art galleries and private collections house material connected to the Kelly story which allows the events and people to be researched and interpreted. Individuals like Isaiah “Wild” Wright played an essential part in the Kelly story which have been enlarged and adapted for popular culture. The study of these individuals thorugh their images and records can help researchers to correctly interpret their involvement with Ned Kelly and the Kelly gang. Artefacts and photographs pertaining to the Kelly gang are particularly valuable for Australian museums. This particular photograph is significant for its connection to Beechworth photographer James Bray who is responsible for many images depicting members of the Kelly Gang. A copy of the original photo held by J. Norris of Butcher St, Echuca, of the P.S Oscar W towing the P.S Gem from Mildura to Swan Hill believed to be in 1930. This towing only got as far as the Bitch 'n Pups. The Oscar W was built in Echuca in 1908 by Captain Franz Wallin, who was also it's first owner. He named it after his son Oscar who had been killed in the Boer War. In 1919 he sold the Oscar W to the Permewan Wright Co. In 1942 it was sold to Captain G. Ritchie who took it to Goolwa. After a busy working life along the Murray River, the P.S Oscar W returned to Goolwa in 1988 where it remains to this day. This picture is significant as it shows a large paddle steamer towing another large paddle steamer in a high river. It shows the river level in 1930, as well as how collaborative life on the river needed to be in those circumstances. The P. S. Edwards was built in May 1875 by J. M. Webb, Echuca. Official number 73287, made of wood, with paddle wheels at the side. 78 gross tons, 27 nett tons. It was altered in 1916 , after cabin removed 48 gross ton. It had 7 different owners before being purchased by R. J. Evans, of Evans Bros. Saw Mill, Echuca, in 1919. The P. S. Edwards was sunk at Echuca in the spring of 1958 and then raised in January 1981 and then was being restored by Geoff Evans in 1985 (Parsons, Ronald. Ships of the Island Rivers. 3rd ed. 1996. p.67) The barge Ada was built in 1899 at Echuca by the Permewan Wright Company. The Ada hull was built of part wood and part steel, to protect the wool from becoming wet on the voyage down the Darling River to the Echuca Wharf. The Ada was used as a logging insider barge as well as a wool barge with the Pevensey on the Darling River.The P. S. Edwards has historical and social significance being a paddle boat built in Echuca. The P. S. Edwards was built in May 1875 by J. M. Webb, Echuca. The Ada was used as an inside looking barge as well as a wool barge with the P.S Pevensey on the Darling River. The barge Ada is still on display at the slipway at the Port of Echuca. One of the toll bags used to collect tolls on the Great Ocean Road. First "Toll Gate" at Sunnymeade Estate as the road went through land owned by Mr C J Lane. Toll gates followed at "Stradbroke Point",later changed to "Stradbroke Knoll" named after the Govenor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke, Grassy Creek and "The Springs". Mr W D McKay first toll keeper, then Mr & Mrs Wright. Toll commenced circa 1925 and ended 2nd October 1936. Cars were charged at 2/6 for car and driver and 1/- for each passenger. Motor cycles 2/-. Brown leather bag, with adjustable shoulder strap for carrying.
