Maurice Miles served in the Australian Army in World War Two and was present at Cowra when the Japanese POW breakout occurred. He joined Citizien Military Forces in 1965, serving with 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles till 1985. Wooden shield from the Ballarat Fire Brigade Social Committee. Shield is known as the Schulze Memorial Shield and was for the winner of the annual Billiards tournament. This shield was a trophy awarded to the lodges of the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The first Warrnambool Lodge of the I.O.O.F. was established in 1860 (Loyal Victorian Lodge) and the Oddfellows Hall in Koroit Street Warrnambool was opened in 1869. One winner of the shield, apart from the Loyal Warrnambool Lodge, was the Loyal Aurora Lodge and the only reference found to a lodge of this name was based in North Melbourne. No information has been found on Frank D. Grayham. This shield is of interest as a trophy given by the Independent Order of Oddfellows in the 1960s. The I.O.O.F. in Warrnambool has been of historical importance in the social and business spheres in the city. This is a wooden shield with a central metal plaque attached and six other smaller metal plaques. The central plaque has an ornamental edging and the plaques are attached with metal pins. Often croquet lawns were in private gardens eg. at Connort (now Moogji)..This shield is part of the history of the Orbost Croquet Club. In a "LED HORSE" category, the horse is presented bridled and unsaddled. The handler leads the horse in clockwise direction on the circle. The horse is required to walk and trot and stand to be judged. The judge looks for correct conformation of the horse as well as ahorse that is neatly presented and in good condition. Straight movement, correctness and quality of paces and obedience of the horse are also taken into consideration. This trophy was sponsored by Manns of Wodonga. The Mann family operated a major business in Wodonga for 85 years, beginning with a produce store in February 1921. It expanded to become one of Australia’s largest regional shopping centres, with a Supermarket, Hardware Store, Steel Store, Plumbing and Industrial supplies store, at one stage employing well over 100 people. The Mann Family sold the business in 2006.This item has local significance as it records winners in equestrian events at the Wodonga Show. Team Road Races were a popular feature of club cycling in the Western District of Victoria during the second half of the 20th century. The shield was initiated by the Camperdown cycling club to record team winners of the races held between the clubs in the Western District of Victoria. Parrying shields have long been used within Aboriginal communities not only for protection, but as a symbolic implement used in rituals. Aboriginal men using very basic tools made them. They were designed to be mainly used in battle but were also used in ceremonies. Many shields have traditional designs or fluting on them whilst others are just smooth. The necessary tools and equipment for hunting, fishing and warfare were one of the very few items that Aboriginals carried with them from place to place. Most were used for a multiplicity of purposes. Because many were made from raw natural materials, such as wood, generally only partial remains are found today.
