Collage of a collection of black and white portraits of men in oval frames with names. They are past councillors and the late Officer C.S. Wingrove of the Shire of Eltham from its inception until 1914. Originally compiled as a farewell gift to Ewan H. Cameron on his retirement from Parliament and community affairs in 1914. The photos were encased in a very large and handsme frame. It was presented to Mr. Cameron as a "testimonial [and] a small token of [Eltham Shire Councillors and community] their heartfelt esteem, and felt Mr Cameron would often look upon the faces encased in the frame, and it would remind him of friendships made and good work performed.' Mr Cameron was a well-respected man described as “Father of all in the County of Evelyn”. There were many living monuments of the good work done by Mr Cameron – schools, churches, halls and railways. Mr Cameron’s retirement was partly due to deafness. On the occasion of the presentation he told his audience that he started his public career in 1858 when he was elected a member of the Castlemaine Mining Board-; he held the position till 1900-42 years. In 1862 he was elected to the Eltham Shire Council (then a Road Board), and retired in 1914-52 years. He entered Parliament in 1874 and retired in 1914 -40 years and 8 months. The Hon Ewan H. The context of its origins further illustrates the esteem of which E.H. Cameron was held in the community. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' On her husband, William's, death in 1914, Violet Holmes inherited 'Sauchieburn’ property in the Ascot District of the Wider Ballarat District, Victoria. Her ownership had descended via the Holmes Family from the pioneer district settler/squatter Captain William Coghill. In turn, the property on Violet's death was left to their family: Violet Spittle (nee Holmes), Mary Holmes, William E. Holmes and Henry Smerdon Holmes. This clock was produced by the American Sessions Clock Company. The company was formed in 1903, after William E. Sessions and his nephew Albert L. Sessions bought out the failing clock company of E.N.Welch Manufacturing. The clock belonged to local Wodonga bootmaker Franz Gördes (b.1843) who immigrated to Australia from Germany in 1871. After docking in Melbourne Franz headed for the goldfields in Beechworth, but didn't strike gold. He returned to his trade and opened a boot shop in Wodonga, which burnt to the ground the day before the opening. In 1902, William E Sessions and other family members purchased a controlling interest in the E.N. Welch Company, a clock manufacturer located in Forestville, Connecticut. Sessions' father owned a foundry located in the town of Bristol, Connecticut that produced cases for E.N Welch Co. On January 9, 1903, the company was reorganized and registered as The “Sessions Clock Company”. Within a few years the Sessions Clock Company was producing clock movements, cases, dials, artwork and castings for their line of mechanical clocks. Between 1903 and 1933 Sessions produced 52 models of mechanical clocks, ranging from Advertisers, large and small clocks with logos of various businesses, to wall, or regulator clocks, and shelf or mantel clocks, designed for the home. Many of the Session clocks from this period are prized by collectors. In 1930, the company expanded to produce electric clocks and timers for radios, while continuing to produce traditional brass mechanical movements. Beginning at the end of World War II Sessions W Model (electric) was widely used by various casting companies for their clocks. The dial of the W Model read Movement by Sessions. In the early 1950s Sessions begin to produce timers for television. In 1956, Sessions was absorbed by a company interested mainly in their timing devices. In 1959, William K. Sessions, grandson of William E. Sessions left the Sessions Clock Company and formed the New England Clock Company. In 1960, one of the Sessions Clock buildings was sold to the Bristol Instrument Gears Company. Kept as the Sessions Company, the new owners ran the operation until 1969 when changes in the market forced the Sessions Company into liquidation. In 1970, the remaining buildings were sold to Dabko Industries, a machine parts manufacturer.The item marks a time when clock production in America was at it’s peak producing clocks for sale in many countries, they were keenly priced, mass produced and available to all. The company had a relatively short life span life regards clock manufacture later diversifying into electric timer mechanisms. Yet it was perhaps inevitable with the advent of electricity along with stiff competition from other clock manufactures that would ultimately herald the end in 1935 of the Sessions company's ability to continue manufacturing mechanical clocks. The Gurley enterprise was established in 1845, first as the partnership of Phelps & Gurley and in 1852 as W. & L. E. Gurley. William Gurley and his younger brother Lewis E. were both engineering alumni of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Troy, NY, and brought to the business a hunger for technical innovation and unrivaled marketing skill. Exposure at the Centennial Exposition in 1876 launched the company into international prominence from which it never fell. The brothers built a factory in 1852 that operated in departments, each department turning out different components, which were then assembled. This revolutionized the industry which, to that time, operated as small shops making, essentially, individual instruments. Tait collection: item 33 of 62 This probate document gives details of the will of Thomas Smith, a farmer in the Wangoom district who was a pioneer settler, having arrived in the area about 1848. He erected the Shamrock Hotel in Dennington in 1868 and it was opened for business in 1869 with David Duffy as the first licensee. Thomas Smith was the licensee in 1870 and members of his family (Cornelius, Robert and Mary Smith) held the licence of the hotel until 1880. A codicil to the will gave Mary Smith, Thomas’ daughter, the hotel land and building. This hotel closed in 2011. Thomas Smith signed the original will with a cross (his mark). This collection of papers have come from the offices of William Ardlie a local solicitor. He was born in Moonee Ponds in 1843 and was admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the supreme Court in 1865. From 1867 to 1878 he was in partnership with George Barber and then continued to practise until his late eighties which made him the oldest practising lawyer in Australia. He was involved in local councils and organisations such as the Hospital and Anglican Church.He was associated with several large homes in Warrnambool including Wyton presently the home of Emmanual College Warrnambool. He died in 1933.His son E L Ardlie also practised as a solicitor from the same offices from 1893. A number of the invoices included relate to the Estate of James drought who was a local policeman and owner of a number of properties and operated in various trades such as George Ramsay manufacturer of stoves and chimneys, J Rogers plumber & gas fitter and Christian & Dodds who were carpenters and joiners. There are a number of documents which relate to the Chinese, many of whom operated market gardens along the Merri River. They were a familiar part of Warrnambool from around 1872 until around 1940. The names mentioned in these documents include Ah Foo,Charles Quing Bow, Andrew Quing Bow Ah Bing Ah Jing Ah Moon and Ah Seong. They were reknown for their supply of fresh vegetables to the people of the town. They leased land from John Moore. These documents are a cross section of the types of documents which were used and are still used in the operation of businesses. They provide a social snapshot of people and the business which they conducted with their solicitors in this case William and E L Ardlie who were a long standing legal firm in the district. Young Henry Pitts sailed from Liverpool, England, in about October 1860, on a ship called the 'British Trident'. About three months later, on January 7th 1861, he arrived in Sydney, Australia. While he travelled from one side of the world to the other, Henry attended lessons on the ship with his onboard teacher, Joseph Benton. On the day before the ship arrived at Sydney, Henry was given a Holy Bible by his teacher. The small black book had a hardcover and many printed pages of very thin paper. Henry must have felt special when he read his teacher’s beautifully written message that said the gift was a ‘mark of respect’ towards Henry. Maybe Mr Benton taught Henry to write with a pen and ink because Henry wrote his name several times inside the front of the book and again below his teacher’s message. Henry may have even learned to read from a Bible, which many passengers included in their luggage. The immigrants on board the British Trident were mostly new arrivals to Australia. Like Henry, they planned to make Australia their new home. Many also hoped to find work in this new country. Some passengers had family and friends waiting for them, people who deposited money towards their trip. Henry’s relative, Charles Pitts, had helped him pay for the ship’s passage, and William Oberthan paid money towards Joseph Benton’s fare. He may have planned for Joseph to work as a teacher in Australia. The Single Females were allowed to leave the ship the day after it docked at Sydney, but the Families and Single Men, including Henry and Joseph, had to stay onboard until Thursday. This Holy Bible is significant for its age, as it was published in 1859. The inscriptions within this small Bible are significant as they show that during a ship's voyage passengers had the opportunity to teach and to learn. They also show a relationship of encouragement had been built between the teacher and pupil. (a Lady of England), was the daughter of Henry St George Tucker (1771-1851), a distinguished official of the British East India Company. From 1852 till her death she wrote many stories for children, most of them allegories with an obvious moral, and devoted the proceeds to charity.
