Corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street, Eltham. Walkers gather for the beginning of the walk led by local historian Russell Yeoman. The tree-covered hill that forms the western backdrop to the Eltham town centre exhibits many characteristics that are considered to contribute to the special character of Eltham. They include unmade streets, steeply sloping land, extensive tree cover and a large number of mud brick and pise (rammed earth) houses. A number of these were constructed in the 1940s and 50s by well-known builders John Harcourt and Alistair Knox. A significant proportion from this period were constructed by owner-builders. We walked around the upper part of the hill in the area of Kerrie Crescent and Peter Street. We visited several interesting houses (for external viewing only). The walk commenced at 2pm at the corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street (Melway ref 21H4) and was about 2 km. This free walk was open to the general public as well as Society members. Originally built in the 1850s by Charles Souter from earth excavated from his property. It was a forerunner for a building style that was later to be synonymous with Eltham. The house is historically significant as the oldest mud brick building in the Shire of Nillumbik, as one of less than half a dozen buildings from the 1850s that survive in the Shire. It underwent several additions and alterations between c.1950s-1980s. It is also significant for its associations with Mervyn Skipper from the well-known Eltham family who was one of the founders of the artist's colony at Montsalvat. The house is architecturally significant because its north section was designed by the noted 'Eltham-style' architect, Alistair Knox, and the two long Oregon beams supporting the main floor were added by the noted 'Eltham-style' builder, Horrie Judd who built the southern room. A onetime tenant in the house, Judd built many Eltham houses and was a major builder of Montsalvat. The 1934 flood destroyed the south wall and the house remained unoccupied for some time. Sonia Skipper, one of Montsalvat’s builders who also worked for Alistair Knox oversaw rebuilding it. She employed landscape designer Gordon Ford, artist Peter Glass and Tim Burstall. The house originally had a cellar for making and storing wine, reputedly the first made in the district according to Alistair Knox in his book ‘We are what we stand on’ (p33). Water would seep into the cellar so Sonia’s father and then owner of the house, Mervyn Skipper bulldozed a channel outside to divert it. The Brocksopp family purchased the house in 1950 and added an outside door to the cellar and converted it into a gallery. Covered under Heritage Overlay, Nillumbik Planning Scheme. The trowel and mallet set was purchased by Mr Swanson, the builder of the Maryborough (Victoria) Railway Station prior to the planned ceremony for the laying of the foundation stone. Duncan Gillies. the Victorian Premier, was to lay the foundation stone, but his government was defeated in the week before the scheduled ceremony. The trowel and mallet set was never used. This set was held by the Maryborough Borough (later City) Council and lay unidentified for almost 120 years until a receipt from the jeweller was discovered. These plans have been drawn up in 1883 by the Warrnambool architect, William Patterson. They show six sections of plans for the erection of a Church of Christ at 12 Spence Street Warrnambool. The mason was William Kellas and the builder was Harold Dawkins. Church of Christ adherents began meeting in Warrnambool in 1875 and bought land in Spence Street in 1877. The church was opened in 1885 with visiting pastors until a resident minister, A. J. Fisher, was appointed in 1915. This church was closed early in the 21st century when a new church, Gateway Church of Christ, was opened in Ragland Parade in Warrnambool. These plans are of great interest as original ones of the Church of Christ In Spence Street Warrnambool. The plans have come from the present-day Warrnambool Church of Christ. The building still exists but is no longer is use as a church. These are two sheets of cream-coloured thick paper with scaled drawings of plan sections of the Church of Christ in Warrnambool. The drawings are in black ink with some sections coloured in. Both pages have a black line margin drawn around the edges. The pages are torn at the edges in several places and the sheets are much stained. The E.J. Tippett Librocate.ary is named after the late E.J. Tippett who was a long time President of the Ballarat School of Mines Council, and library advocate. In February 1985, the first sod for the new SMB Campus building was turned by the Minister for Planning and the Environment, the Hon. Evan Walker, M.P. The overall responsibility for the building rested with the Public Works Department in association with the SMB Campus architect, Ewan Jones & Associates and the builder, S. J. Weir Pty. Ltd. They put together the facility that is both functional and of a style that merges with the surrounding architecture. This is a photocopy of a booklet produced in the early 1900s by the firm of A.Robinson & Co. of Warrnambool. Alexander Robinson, the son of James and Jane Robinson (farmers) was born in Warrnambool in 1862. He was an award-winning coach and carriage builder, firstly in partnership with Frederick Morse in Fairy Street and later with his own company A. Robinson and Co. By the early 20th century he was also selling and repairing motor cars. Alex Robinson was a Warrnambool City Councillor from 1904 to 1910 and from 1922 to 1927 and Mayor on two occasions. His business site is now occupied by Callaghan Motors. Although this is only a photocopy it is of great interest as the photocopied photographs are clear and show us exactly what type of horse-drawn vehicles were in use in the Warrnambool area at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The firm of A. Robinson was a prominent one in Warrnambool and Alex Robinson was active in civic affairs in the town. This is a photocopy of a booklet produced by Alexander Robinson advertising his Steam Carriage Works in the early 1900s. The pages are bound together with a plastic clip and the back cover is a piece of stiff cardboard. The booklet contains black and white photographs of the factory building and of the buggies, wagons, jinkers and carts for sale. This work was presented to The Mayor and Mayoress, Cr. and Mrs R.G. Ward, by the citizens of Brighton to commemorate the Brighton Centenary in 1959. Brighton was first incorporated as a borough on 18 January 1859, it became a town on 18 March 1887 and was proclaimed a city on 12 March 1919. The new Brighton Municipal Offices were designed by Kevin Knight of Oakley and Parkes with the engineers John Connell and Associates and were erected by Prentice Builders Pty Ltd. The foundation stone was laid on 13 February 1959 and the building was opened on 21 July 1961. ‘Studley Park Bridge’ or ‘penny bridge’ linked Church Street in Abbotsford and what is now Yarra Bend Park. The privately constructed bridge opened in 1857, gaining its popular name from the toll charged at the Abbotsford end. The engineer of the 485ft wide bridge was Mr. Austin and the builder was ‘Mr Grant, who threw the bridge over the Niagara’. Following the opening of Johnston Street Bridge, declining tolls led to the Bridge falling into disrepair. Badly damaged by the flood of 1891, the Bridge was compulsorily acquired by the Government in 1899, and later dismantled and sold for firewood.This work forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. 'Berrington' in Sackville Street was built in 1888 for Job Smith, builder, who was the first owner of this substantial two-storey house. The property was given an initial N.A. V. of £125 3 and it is possible that Smith was the contractor for his house.By the turn of the century 'Berrington' was identified as having thirteen rooms and an N.A.V. of £13 while the house remained in the hands of the Smith family until the late 1930s. The new owner at that stage was a Mrs Pederson who convened the house into three flats 6 while in 1951 it was further subdivided to become seven units. It remains substantially intact with a cast iron verandah dominating the front and side facades, that has the added distinction of a fine cast iron frieze that at ground floor level has two tiers. Behind the verandah, the facade is asymmetrical. There is a central six panelled door with a fine semicircular fanlight, and segmentally arched windows to the ground floor and on one side of the door there is a polygonal bay window that extends up the two floors. At harvest time farmers had relied on itinerant teams of workers descending on the district looking for work. The three Barrie brothers on their adjoining farms combined forces to cut their crop at its optimum time while the weather was in their favour. Up to many 20 workers at times formed a team in earlier times. Agricultural university students were also keen to gain practical experience in the field.
